The 35th Biennial IPH Congress of the International Association of Paper Historian successfully took place in Washington, D.C., June 7–11, 2021. This first IPH congress in the United States of America since the one in Boston in 1982 was generously hosted by the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art and the National Archives and Records Administration. The congress, entitled Investigating American Collections on Paper, focused on paper used as the primary material for objects in American museums, libraries, archives and private collections. The main themes were: ‘Papermaking in the Americas from pre-colonial times to the present,’ ‘Studies of papers, regardless of place of making, used by printers, artists, and literary or historical American figures,’ ‘The international paper trade, especially commerce between European and Asian papermaking centers and the Western Hemisphere’ and ‘New technologies for recording watermarks and other physical characteristics of paper, as well as the evolving use of databases for managing and sharing watermark images and information.’
The IPH Congress Book is a compilation of many of the research papers that were presented during the congress. Abstracts for each paper are written in English, French, German, and Spanish.
