Company Profile
Digital Bedrock provides extensive, managed digital preservation services, which go beyond simply storing files. We actively preserve clients’ digital content, ensuring its longevity. While the company was created specifically to perform digital preservation services, we also offer consulting services related to digital preservation: collection assessments (of physical and digital collections), metadata audits and schema development, and software development. In Digital Bedrock’s digital preservation system, complex metadata is created about an asset’s characteristics and dependencies, and the asset’s health is monitored over time by performing scheduled, bit-level fixity checks and format obsolescence monitoring. We support any type of digital format: audiovisual, text, image, websites, emails, code, and data sets. Offline redundancy on LTO data tape is provided in three geographically separated and secure locations, with assets migrated as new storage media becomes available. For maximum security, our digital preservation storage is offline, but clients have their own dedicated online portal that allows them to search what they provided to Digital Bedrock, download metadata about their files, and view low-resolution proxies (for security reasons, the proxies are not downloadable). Our clients often use other systems for providing online access to proxies to the public or other purposes, knowing that their masters are safely preserved at Digital Bedrock. The company operates in a closed, offline environment in a high-security ISO 27001-certified data center. Our workflow is OAIS-compliant. Digital Bedrock makes digital preservation easy. There are no software licenses, no annual subscription fees, and no staff training. Your content is not locked into a proprietary system. Our service is easily scalable for any size collection, so whether you have 30 GB or 3 PB, we can help preserve your collections.
Products/Services Available Through the FEDLINK Contract
Since Digital Bedrock performs the complex, intensive work of technical metadata extraction, format validation, off-line storage, scheduled fixity checks, and disaster recovery, your organization can focus its expertise and budget on managing and providing access to the content that is represented in the digital files. Digital Bedrock works in partnership with an organization’s digital curation activities, acting as its additional staff and infrastructure.
Specific actions:
- Verification of the file package (SIP) manifest and checksums to ensure the files were received safely and intact.
- Run virus scans prior to ingest. If a file is found to have a virus, we immediately notify the client so they may investigate the infected file in their environment.
- Validation of all formats upon ingest.
- Extraction and indexing of full technical and embedded metadata upon ingest. This unstructured metadata becomes indexed and searchable in our system and on the client’s dedicated portal.
- Mapping of clients’ descriptive metadata to our database structure so clients can search for their files by their own metadata in their online portal.
- Ongoing format obsolescence monitoring. Obsolescence checks are run continuously through our Digital Object Obsolescence Database (DOOD) (patent pending).
- Creation of checksums (SHA-512) at the file and stream level. We use SHA-512 since it is the highest-level hash algorithm available today, and is recommended by the Department of Defense.
- Write files to 3 sets of LTO using LTFS. Only a clients’ files are on their sets of tapes. Files are verified they are correctly written on all 3 tapes prior to storage. LTFS is an open source file system for LTO tapes, so there is no proprietary system “locking in” your files.
- Utilization of locked Turtle cases for assets stored remotely for security and safety in shipping and storage.
- Geographic dispersal of the 3 sets of LTO tapes for disaster recovery.
- Perform annual fixity checks (bit health integrity) on the local set of LTO tapes.
- Migration to a new generation LTO in the future.
- Provide a secure client portal where clients can search for their data, monitor our actions, and view low-resolution proxies of their data. Clients can also download technical and preservation metadata, but not the proxies. The master files sent for preservation are not accessible through the portal since they are stored offline. Optional service: Full proxies can be placed on the portal so Clients can see content to help with identification. We also offer consulting services related to digital preservation: collection assessments (of physical and digital collections), metadata audits and schema development, and software development.
