The Library collects broadly in the social sciences. The emphasis in all collection development activities is to support the needs of current and ongoing interest to the Congress and to the nation’s educators, researchers and students. The division collects in all publishing formats, including microform, electronic and machine readable material.
Subjects include: anthropology and archeology, biography, ethnic populations, economics, education, geography, gypsies, heraldry, history (U.S. and world), library and information science, local government, military science, Native Americans, numismatics, philosophy, political science, psychology, recreation and sports, women, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) studies, Western and Eastern civilizations, and Western and Eastern religions. The Library comprehensively collects genealogical publications, including self-published works, which are related to the United States. Social sciences subject liaison librarians develop collections in close cooperation with other areas of the Library to ensure collaboration and to reduce duplication.
