Cancellation of multiple subdivisions used after [name of person]–Characters

The free-floating multiple subdivisions –Characters—Children, [Jews, Physicians, etc.] and –Characters—[name of individual character] have been cancelled as part of the LCSH multiples cancellation project. Going forward, the policy on cataloging works discussing specific named groups or categories of characters of a literary author, or a specific named character of the author, is to assign the name heading for the literary author subdivided by –Characters and also assign an additional heading for the character or group of characters. The subdivision –Characters will also continue to be assigned to general works on the characters of a literary author.

Pertinent SHM instruction sheets will be revised and affected authority records will be cancelled or revised offlist, as is the practice with the Multiples Project.

Cancellation of the multiple subdivisions –Religious aspects—Baptists, [Catholic Church, etc.] and –Religious aspects—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]

All uses of the multiple subdivisions –Religious aspects—Baptists, [Catholic Church, etc.] and –Religious aspects—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.] have been removed from LCSH, including their use as free-floating subdivisions. Therefore, all uses of a subdivision for a religion or Christian denomination after –Religious aspects must be editorially established (that is, proposed).

The topical subdivision –Religious aspects remains free-floating under individual animals and groups of animals, individual plants and groups of plants, individual chemicals and groups of chemicals, individual materials and types of materials, individual languages and groups of languages, individual diseases and types of diseases, individual organs and regions of the body, individual musical instruments and families of instruments, and individual wars. The subdivision must be editorially established under all other headings.

Pertinent SHM instruction sheets will be revised, as will the authority records for the free-floating subdivisions.

Other decisions:

Animal swimming; Cattle—Swimming

The proposals were submitted in order to authorize the subdivision –Swimming under the pattern for animals and groups of animals. The subdivision –Swimming would necessitate widespread exceptions in the Anmials pattern, because the pattern covers both land animals and aquatic animals. Exceptions are especially problematic in linked data; therefore, new subdivisions that cause exceptions are generally discouraged.

Further, the meeting believes that the authorized subdivision –Locomotion is sufficient to express the concept when postcoordinated with the heading Animal swimming.

If a heading for swimming behavior in a particular animal is needed, a heading for [animal] swimming may be proposed. (See, for example, the heading Dog swimming.)

The proposals were not approved.

Carcinologists; Entomologists; Helminthologists; Malacologists; Nematologists

These proposals were made to change the broader term Zoologists to Invertebrate zoologists, which is an intermediate grouping under the broader term Zoologists. The hierarchy under Zoologists will be maintained as a flat hierarchy, i.e., specialized zoologists will be narrower terms under Zoologists, not under the intermediate specialty. This decision is similar to the decision for Fisheries that appeared on List 2005. The reason for this is threefold. First, it allows LCSH to display a complete alphabetical list of zoology specialties. Second, it reduces the maintenance of headings in the category, removing the necessity of changing several headings when an intermediate level is interposed. Third, it allows the ability to avoid establishing intermediate levels of hierarchy unless they are specifically needed for works being cataloged.

The proposals were not approved.

Elephant riding

The proposal was based on a photograph from a collection of photographs of trips to India and Europe. The broader terms chosen for the proposed heading indicate that the heading is intended to reflect tourism. However, the use of elephants in transportation and labor is not limited to tourism. Therefore, the meeting believes that the proposed heading is unnecessarily limiting. The headings Elephants—Pictorial works and Wildlife-related recreation could be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Subtidal ecology

Subtidal ecology is, by definition, the ecology of the shallow sublittoral area of a marine environment. The term is authoritative, however, most of the materials that are about the subtidal area also cover the sublittoral area, and the introduction of another heading for the sublittoral area would serve to separate these materials, forcing users to search in two places. The term Subtidal ecology will be added as an upward UF on the heading Sublittoral ecology. The proposal was not approved.
