PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

BR65.T83-.T836
This proposal was made to add Bishop Timotheus to the list of prominent early leaders of the early Christian church – that is, the Fathers of the Church. Although Timotheus fits the time period, he is not considered to be a Father of the Church. The work should be classed with its topic. The proposal was not approved.

[DS598.P5-.P53] and related proposals

These proposals sought to add hierarchy to the cutter for the history of Pulau Pinang. CSM F 350 sec. 4 states that hierarchy should not be built into cutter lists unless the practice is already well-established for a list. None of the other cutters in this list have hierarchy. The proposals were not approved.

GT2868.3

Gukbap is a soup from South Korea. The work should be classed with soups by region or country, GT2867.2.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

[HQ73.4-.42] and related proposals

These proposals sought to add a hierarchy for the travel of sexual minorities. According to information found online, the work being cataloged is intended for children and is about the state of LGBTQ rights, and the social conditions of sexual minorities, in various countries of the world. It is not about the travel habits of sexual minorities. The work should be classed in HQ73.2. That number for juvenile works about sexual minorities that was preapproved for a CIP and will appear on Tentative List 2005. The proposal was not necessary.

HQ799.9.E26

Works on the economic conditions of young people have been classed in HQ799.7, and the meeting wishes to continue that practice. The proposal was not approved.

[HV6433.3-.5]; [HV6433.73-.78]; [HV6433.785-.786]; [HV6433.79-.8]; [HV6433.85-.88]

The proposed confer (Cf.) references are all covered by the general see reference at the beginning of the Terrorism hierarchy. The reference states, “For terrorism as criminal offense in individual countries or region, see the country or region in the appropriate K subclasses.” The proposals were not necessary.

JZ1312

This proposal was made to add “Dominance” to the caption “Hegemony. Hegemonic power” and to make an including note for the concept of super-power. The addition to the caption would be redundant because in this context dominance means hegemony.  Additionally, the meeting does not wish to include the concept of super-power in this number for hegemony because the concept of super-power is already provided its own number, JZ1317. The proposal was not approved.

[JZ1317]

This proposal was made to cancel the existing number JZ1317, Concept of super-power, making it a reference to JZ1312. The meeting wishes to retain the established number. The proposal was not approved.

KIA1.2.A29

Abya Yala Net appears to be a news site that includes some legal information; it is not dedicated primarily to law and legal matters. The proposal was not approved.

KIM6.2.I53

The Indian Law Resource Center is classed at KIA2.3.I53, with works on the law of indigenous peoples of the Americas in general. The proposal was not approved.

LG171.S336

The institution is a school of social science, which should be classed in H62.5.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

MT599.J37

This proposal may be resubmitted with resubmitted subject proposals. See below under Jarana huasteca for details.

PA8310.F38

This proposal was made to establish a literary author number for Guida Fava, a medieval author. According to the subject headings assigned, the work being cataloged is about the rhetoric of letter writing. It should be classed in PA2317. The proposal was not necessary.

 PG3020.5.S35

This proposal was made to establish science as a special topic in 20th century Russian literary criticism. The first subject heading assigned to the work being cataloged is Science fiction, Russian—20th century—History and criticism. The work should be classed in PG3098.S5, criticism of Russian science fiction. The proposal was not necessary.

PZ90.I58

This proposal may be resubmitted with resubmitted subject proposals. See below under Inuktitut language materials for details.

PZ90.M39

A note in the classification proposal indicates that it should have been accompanied by a subject proposal, but a subject proposal was not submitted and the meeting could not find a relevant one in the system. The classification proposal may be resubmitted with a subject proposal.

QA76.57.A42

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal, this classification proposal was not approved. The work should be classed in QA76.76.I58. For details about the subject proposal, see below under Amazon Alexa (Online service).

TX840.V44

Vegan cooking has been classed with vegetarian cooking TX837-838. The meeting prefers to continue this practice, rather than establishing a separate number for it. The caption at TX837-838 was revised to include vegan cooking. The proposal was not approved.

B-BJ16 4.O58

Works on ontology are classed in BD300-460. The work being cataloged should be classed in BD316, general works on ontology written in Russian and the other Slavic languages and published since 1801. The proposal was not approved.

PN1 14.F34

The proposal did not include any information about the work being cataloged. Classification proposals must include, at a minimum, the main entry (if pertinent), title proper, and date of publication. LC proposals should also include the LCCN of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1195, Land Vehicles
$x Windows and windshields $x Defrosters

Other decisions:

Amazon Alexa (Online service)

The meeting prefers not to establish a separate heading for each intelligent personal assistant. The heading Intelligent personal assistants (Computer software), which was established in 2012 for a work about Siri, should be used for works about Alexa. The proposal was not approved.

Initiation rites—Religious aspects—Syro-Malabar Church

The citation for the work being cataloged states that that work is about “Christian initiation in the East Syrian tradition.” That information is not specific enough to support the proposed subdivision for the Syro-Malabar Church. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Jarana huasteca; Jarana huasteca music

The proposal Jarana huasteca includes a citation to the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, but the citation for the work being cataloged does not explain in English how the work relates to the proposal. A cataloger-supplied translation or a brief summary should be added. The proposal Jarana huasteca music should include the standard scope notes as indicated by H 1918 sec. 1. The proposals may be resubmitted.

 Kankakee River State Park (Ind.)

SHM H 690 sec. 1 states that GNIS is to be cited in all subject proposals for geographic places in the United States.  It is unclear whether GNIS was indeed consulted; there is a citation for “GEONames,” but there are at least two separate freely available databases called Geonames. If the GEONames citation is for GNIS, then the citation is incomplete, because GNIS includes several variant names that should be cited and provided as UFs in the proposal. A complete GNIS citation should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Käfernburg, House of

The citation for the work being cataloged should contain information in English that indicates that relationship of the work to the proposed heading. In addition, there is no indication in the proposal that Käfernburg was a ruling house. It appears that they were counts, so the proposal should be revised to conform to conform to the instructions in SHM H 1574 sec. 3. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Maketu Estuary (N.Z.)

SHM H 800 sec. 7 states that river estuaries are established by adding the word Estuary to the heading for the river. It appears that the Maketu Estuary is the lower course of the Maketu River, which must be proposed. The proposal for the estuary may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the river.

McKissack family

McKissack is a variant spelling of McKissick. A UF McKissack family was added to the heading McKissick family. The proposal to establish McKissack family as a separate heading was not approved.

Morocco—Politics and government—To 1961

The citation for the work being cataloged indicates that the work is about Moroccan politics and government during the protectorate period. Portions of Morocco were under two separate protectorates from the early 20th century until 1956. The subdivision –To 1961 would cover the period, but also include all of the centuries up to that point. The free-floating subdivision –Politics and government–20th century would be much more specific to the work being cataloged, which should be assigned Morocco—Politics and government—20th century. The proposal was not approved.

Schwarzburg, House of

The citation for the work being cataloged should contain information in English that indicates that relationship of the work to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Teenage vampires

As a general rule, the meeting prefers not to qualify headings for types of fictitious characters by age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, etc. The headings Teenagers—Fiction and Vampires—Fiction may be assigned to the work being cataloged. The headings Lesbian vampires and Lesbian vampires in motion pictures were cancelled in accordance with this preference. The proposal was not approved.

Vaccination in mass media

The phrase mass media has two different meanings in common parlance. It is used as a loose synonym for the news media, and also as a broad term covering films, television and radio programs, newspapers, periodicals, etc. – that is, the modern means of mass communication.

The third citation in the proposal is clearly for a work about press coverage of vaccination, and the other citations are ambiguous but seem to lean toward press coverage. The meeting requests that the work being cataloged be reexamined to determine whether it is about press coverage of vaccination. If it is, then the heading Vaccination—Press coverage should be assigned and the proposal deleted. If the work is about mass media in the broader sense, then the first citation should be clarified, the third citation should be removed, and the proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Architectural drawings

Both of the UFs being proposed are covered by UFs on the BT for Architectural drawings. The proposal was not approved.

Speech corpora

On list 1906, the decision was made to not approve proposals for individual types of data sets. Instead, catalogers should use the subject headings to reflect the contents of the data set.

Speech corpora cannot be described by a subject heading that reflects the contents of the data. The subject of the data would be irrelevant. Assigning the genre/form terms Data sets and Sound recordings would also be insufficient. Therefore, the proposal for Speech corpora was approved exceptionally.

CHILDREN’S SUBJECT HEADINGS

Inuktitut language materials; Inuktitut language materials—Bilingual

The citation for the work being cataloged in each of these proposals should include information that indicates how the work is related to the proposal. In this case, a simple cataloger’s note indicating that the work is fiction for children written in Inuktitut would suffice. In addition, headings in the form […] language materials have standard scope notes in CSH. Finally, and the meeting suggests that the cataloger might also want to propose Inuktitut language—Readers at the same time, to complete the pattern that was established with other headings of this type. The proposals may be resubmitted.
