Eric Holder Keynote Speaker for African American History Month

U.S. Attorney Eric H. Holder Jr.

The keynote speaker for the Library's celebration of African American History Month will be U.S. Attorney Eric H. Holder Jr. Mr. Holder will deliver his remarks on Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Mumford Room of the Madison Building. This year's theme, "African American Civil Rights: A Reappraisal," was developed by the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History Inc.

Eric Holder was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in October 1993. He is the District's first black U.S. Attorney.

Mr. Holder graduated from Columbia College in 1973, where he majored in American history. He earned his J.D. degree from Columbia Law School in 1976. While in law school, he clerked at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Department of Justice's Criminal Division.

Upon graduation, Mr. Holder moved to Washington and joined the Department of Justice as part of the Attorney General's Honors Program. In 1988 he was nominated by President Clinton to become an associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
