About the Cover

January 13 cover

Edward S. Curtis, the best-known photographer of Indians and Indian life, was a master at presenting the stoic, vanishing American in his romantic images. This distinctive, atypical portrait of a young Navajo woman, c. 1904, smiling and unreserved, is among the many Curtis photographs held in the Prints and Photographs Division that were not published by him.
