A proposal to revise the Uighur romanization table has been submitted to the Library of Congress and is available for review at Uighur [PDF, 207 KB].
The objectives of this revision are fourfold:
- 1. The existing rules were occasionally confusing and conflicting (e.g. Rule 2) and hampered reversibility (Rules 2, 6, 7, and 9).
- 2. The letters “i” and “y” are distinct in Uighur and should be distinct in Romanization.
- 3. Medial hamzah should be romanized ‘ (alif).
- 4. The new table is now almost completely reversible.
Comments on this proposed romanization table may be sent to Bruce Johnson, Policy and Standards Division ([email protected]) by February 5, 2015.
