The purpose of the NACO Military Funnel is to enrich and enhance the strength of the Name Authority File in terms of headings related to military history and associated fields. Funnel members make and review military-related headings. Additionally, the Funnel develops best-practices for NACO work in this area where existing cataloging rules and NACO documentation may be incomplete; develops and makes recommendations to PCC for additions, changes and clarifications for NACO rules and procedures pertaining to headings in this subject area; and provides advice, assistance and a forum for discussion for all catalogers interested in this subject area. The Funnel defines “military” broadly to include not just warfare on land, but all matters related to military history, military art and science, naval history, naval art and science, airpower history and aerospace studies, and other subject areas related to the history of armed conflict and military institutions. Funnel membership is open to any library, whether an existing NACO library interested in this subject field and or a library completely new to NACO. We enthusiastically welcome inquiries from all catalogers with an interest in this subject area. (Although this project is part of the NACO program, the Funnel also serves as a point of contact for those doing SACO program work and who wish to consult with specialists in this subject area.)
