6.2.3. Subfields $a-h Enumeration data
For Vol. 1, no. 1, fasc. 1
891 20 $9 853 $8 1 $a v. $b no. [pattern] $c fasc. [pattern]
891 41 $9 863 $8 1.1 $a 1 $b 1 $c 1
In the following examples, the pattern which would normally given for subfields $b and following is omitted from mention, though understood:
For 1:1 or 1-1 (where the numbers represent a more inclusive division followed by a subdivision, e.g. year:month): Ignore the dividing punctuation; input the numbers in consecutive subfields. Note: the relationship of the numbers must first be determined. When in doubt, input combinations in a single subfield, retaining the punctuation.
891 20 $9 853 $8 1 $a (*) $b (*)
891 41 $9 863 $1.1 $a 1 $b 1
For 1-1 (where the numbers are simply consecutive, e.g. 1-1 through 1-1000 )
891 20 $9 853 $8 1 $a (*)
891 41 $9 863 $8 1.1 $a 1.1-1.1000
If the piece in hand is not, or not with certainty, the first piece to be published with that caption and pattern, use angle brackets around the enumeration and chronology. Separate sets of angle brackets are used around the content of each individual subfield or portion of subfield indicating uncertain data.
For 3rd ed.
