Standard Second Headings for CYAC Records
Subject Cataloging | Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (CYAC)
The CYAC “Standard second headings list,” also referred to as “Heading pairs,” cites specific headings that are routinely paired with broader headings to allow those searching the catalog to access materials using both approaches. Unlike LC cataloging, where the most specific heading is usually selected, in CYAC cataloging it is understood that children might approach a subject in different ways. For example, if a young user were looking for books about beagles, they might look under the specific heading Beagle (Dog breed) or under the broader heading Dogs. Therefore, both headings are used on the bibliographic record for a book about beagles. Another set of significant examples includes the specific headings for types of schools, such as Middle schools; Nursery schools; High schools; and Boarding schools; all are assigned the heading Schools. For a complete list of these heading pairs see H1685. What follows is a list of heading pairs that are routinely used in CYAC cataloging.
