Record Syntax Object Identifiers for Specific MARC Formats
The following registration scheme for specific MARC formats was approved
at the March 1999 ZIG meeting.
For each general MARC format listed above, the following specific formats
are automatically registered, subordinate to the object identifier for
the general format, 1.2.840.10003.5.x
- bibliographic
- authority
- holdings
- community information
- classification
Thus for example for Marc21, the following are registered:
When the general object identifier (e.g. 1.2.840.10003.5.10) is used
it identifies the general MARC format (e.g. Marc21) and the specific
format is unspecified. Thus an origin may specify Marc21 as the preferred
record syntax on a Present request, and the response might include records
of any of the five specific formats; or the origin might specify Marc21
Bibiliographic as the preferred record syntax, and the response might
be limited to bibliographic records only.
The following Extension to this scheme was approved December 2002
Additional format types (beyond the five listed above) may be registered
subordinate to 1.2.840.10003.5.x.100. An individual representing the
format 1.2.840.10003.5.x may request to be designated by the maintenance
agency as the registration agent for assignments subordinate to the
oid 1.2.840.10003.5.x.100. (For example, a representative of the Danmarc
format could be designated as registration authority to assign object
identifiers subordinate to 1.2.840.1003.5.14.100, and for example might
register "Extended Danmarc" as 1.2.840.10003.5.14.100.1.)
If a second individual requests to register format types for the same
format, that individual would be designated agent for 1.2.840.10003.5.x.101,
and so on. The following assignments have been made to date:

Notes:
- The two oid nodes 1.2.840.10003.5.109 and 1.2.840.10003.5.110 are
allocated to mime types:
- iana mime types are registered subordinate to 1.2.840.10003.5.109
- Z39.50 mime types ate registered subordinate to 1.2.840.10003.5.110
- A mime type may be registered as a Z39.50 mime type when there
is no current appropriate iana type. When a mime type is so registered
it is with the understanding that that registration will be depricated
if and when an appropriate mime type is defined by iana, and it will
be superceded by a subsequent registration in the iana category.
