Call for Applications: Performing Arts or Visual Arts Teacher-in-Residence Position
The Educational Outreach Division of the Library of Congress is seeking applications from current K-12 teachers of Performing Arts or Visual Arts for one Teacher-in-Residence position during the 2018-19 school year.
The Educational Outreach team develops and delivers programs to make the Library's unparalleled collections of primary sources visible, accessible, and easy for K-12 teachers to integrate into classroom instruction. Previous Teachers-in-Residence have led professional development workshops, conducted original research, developed teaching materials, wrote for publication, and led and supported projects to reach a diverse audience of educators nationwide. This is the first time the Library has specifically recruited a performing arts or visual arts teacher for this opportunity.
Qualifications of successful candidates include:
- knowledge about the Library's digitized primary sources with experience using them in instruction
- leadership experience, especially in designing and delivering professional development
- an innovative, flexible and collaborative work style, able to work on a team in an office environment
- excellent communication skills
- the ability to live and work in the Washington, DC, metro area for the duration of the school year
The selected teacher will participate in this program via an intergovernmental personnel agreement between the Library and his or her home school district. The Library will reimburse the district for salary and benefits paid to the teacher during the school year, and will release the Teacher-in-Residence for all district holidays and vacations. The term of the appointment will match the dates of the teacher's home school district's school year.
The selected teacher will receive a monthly housing stipend if he or she teaches outside of the Washington DC metropolitan area. The Library cannot pay for travel or moving expenses.
To be considered, teachers should complete the application with an accompanying letter from a school or district administrator authorized to approve an intergovernmental personnel agreement.
Applications will be evaluated based on the teacher's creativity and willingness to contribute to the educational community as evidenced by his or her description of past activities and recommendation letters, and the feasibility and value of the project that the applicant proposes.
Finalists will be contacted for a brief phone interview prior to the selection decision.
