Understanding and Implementing PREMIS – A Tutorial at iPRES 2019
This tutorial is an introduction to the preservation metadata standard PREMIS. It will cover the history and development of the standard and the rationale for capturing preservation metadata, showing preservation metadata relate to other types of metadata and how institutions benefit from implementing PREMIS. Participants will learn the basic semantic entities of the PREMIS Data Dictionary and be introduced to different serializations such as XML and RDF. The last section of the tutorial will be dedicated to implementation case studies, showing how institutions use different aspects of PREMIS--such as PREMIS in METS, PREMIS in Semantic Web Technology, and how PREMIS supports conformance and repository interoperability. The expected core learning outcome is to enable attendants to understand the benefits, rationale, and basic usage of the data model behind PREMIS as well as the main semantic entities of the data model.
