Note: The subtitle, "Containing the freshest advices, foreign
and domestick", follows the title and is separated from it by a
period and a line. Ceased publication in 1751 prior to July 1. The
last issue located is that of Mar. 18, 1751.
Publisher: Nov. 5, 1733, John Peter Zenger. (Died July
28, 1746.) Aug. 4, 1746, Cathrine Zenger. Between Nov. 21 and Dec.
12, 1748, John Zenger. (Died 1751.)
Size varies: Nov. 5 1733-Jan. 30, 1744, quarto. Feb. 6,
1744-1751, folio.

No issue was published on Nov. 18, as Zenger was imprisoned
on Nov. 17, and was prohibited the liberty of com- munication
with his friends on the outside. Nov. 20th he appeared in court
on a writ of habeas corpus and was granted the privilege of
"speaking thru the hole of the door" of the prison (see issue
of Nov. 25, 1734). By this method he conducted the printing
of this journal until his release from prison, Aug. 5, 1735
(see issue of Aug. 18, 1735). His trial resulted in the first
important victory for the freedom of the press. |
