Engaging Our Veterans to Preserve Their Histories

April 23, 2018

Left: collections arrive in an old suitcase. Right: collections storage at the Library of Congress

Left: It is not unusual for collections to arrive at the Library in this manner. Right: VHP collections storage at the Library of Congress; collections stored in preservation boxes in secure stacks with proper temperature and relative humidity control.

About the Program:

In the first part of the lecture, Karen Lloyd, Director of the Veterans History Project (VHP), and Rachel Telford, VHP Archivist, highlight several collections and present the Project's mission: to collect, preserve, and make accessible the first-hand accounts American veterans so that future generations may better understand the realities of war.

Preservation makes universal access to the collection possible. In the second half of the lecture, Library conservators showcase examples of conservation treatments and related work undertaken at the Library to improve the condition of the Project's unique collections for long-term preservation and access.

Immediately following the lecture, Library conservators and the Project's archivists offer a special table display of select VHP collections and invite participants to look closely and talk with experts.

The Library of Congress celebrates Preservation Week 2018 with a full day of programming, including behind-the-scenes tours of Preservation, a lecture focused on the Library's enduring work to collect, preserve, and honor the legacies of our veterans, and a special table display of collection items from the Library's Veterans History Project presented by Library conservators and the Project's archivists.
