This group describes a specific subset of formats that are known in computing as "archive" file formats and are used to collect multiple data files together into a single file for easier portability and storage, with the option for data compression to save storage space. In addition to files and metadata, archive files may include features for fixity checking or checksums, process history data, encryption and other technical protection mechanisms, directory structures and error detection and correction information.
This content category is called "aggregate" instead of "archive" because the term "archive" has a broader community use beyond the definitions of these formats.
Inclusion of a format does not imply that it is preferred or acceptable for Library of Congress collections. Conversely, omission of a format from the list does not imply that it is not preferred or acceptable. See the
Recommended Formats Statement for more information.
