PROPOSAL NO. 2002-02: Definition of Subfields $u, $y and $3 in Fields 508 and 511

1. BACKGROUND

1.1 Fields 508 and 511

Field 508 (Creation/Production Credits Note) records the credits for persons or organizations, other than members of the cast, who have participated in the creation and/or production of the work. This repeatable field is used to credit the producer, director, film editor, consultant, etc., of a production in music and visual resources. Field 508 contains the following data elements:

Indicators
Undefined

Subfields
$a - Creation/production credits note (NR)
$6 - Linkage (NR)
$8 - Field link and sequence number (R)

Field 511 (Participant or Performer Note) contains a note giving information about the participants, players, narrators, presenters or performers for items, such as films, musicals and recordings. This repeatable field is used to credit on-stage performers in productions. Field 511 contains the following data elements:

First Indicator
Display constant controller
0 - No display constant generated
1 - Cast

Second Indicator
Undefined

Subfields
$a - Participant or performer note (NR)
$6 - Linkage (NR)
$8 - Field link and sequence number (R)

In the discussion of Proposal 2001-07 (Repeatability of Field 508 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format), participants felt that defining subfield $u in both fields 508 and 511 would provide remote access to complete lists of credit and production notes. Participants also felt that defining subfield $3 in fields 508 and 511 would allow for grouping credits that are specific to a particular part of a multipart item.

2. DISCUSSION

2.1 Definition of Subfield $u

In many fields of the MARC 21 formats, subfield $u (Uniform Resource Identifier) contains a URL or URN to provide electronic access data in a standard syntax to an electronic item. Defining subfield $u in fields 508 and 511 would allow catalogers to link to online credit information which is provided by several online directories (such as the Internet Movie Database at: http://us.imdb.com/). This data often contains value-added information, such as ratings, photos, and biographical information about those credited that may not be appropriate to include in the record.

2.2 Definition of Subfield $y

During the discussion of Proposal 2000-06 (Defining URI Subfields), the MARC Advisory Committee agreed that a there should be a means of providing display text when only a URI is given in the field, either as an indicator value or a subfield. Subsequently, in Proposal 2000-07, a technique was provided to record link text to display with a URL in field 856 (Electronic location and access), subfield $y (Link text). Subfield $y could also be defined in field 508 for this purpose. Because the first indicator of field 511 is defined as "Display constant controller," there is no need to define subfield $y in it.

508 ## $yProduction credits: $u<Online credit information>
511 1# $aRussell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen.

2.3 Definition of Subfield $3

Subfield $3 (Materials specified) contains information that specifies the part of the bibliographic item to which a field applies. It is also included in field 856 (Electronic location and access) to indicate the part of the resource to which the URI applies. Because many new DVD videos include corresponding sound tracks, copies of production diaries, actor interviews, etc., subfield $3 would allow catalogers to group the production credits for each part separately. Moreover, defining subfield $3 in fields 508 and 511 would allow catalogers to group credits of collected works separately. Although many cataloging agencies may prefer coding a detailed 505 field (Formatted contents note) to accommodate this information, the option to code detailed 508 and 511 fields may enhance display and retrieval of this information, especially in systems that index these fields.

The following example is of a sound recording with multiple works. Parentheses have been used to indicate which credits belong to which work.

245 10 $aBernstein live.$nDiscs 9 & 10$h[sound recording].
505 0# $aDisc 9. An outdoor overture / Arron Copland – Pithoprakta / Iannis Xenakis – Antiphony one / Henry Brant -- Improvisation sur Mallarmâe I / Pierre Boulez – Atlas Ecliptcalis / John Cage -- Disc 10. Scenes from Gèotterdammerung / Richard Wagner.
511 0# $aNew York Philharmonic ; Leonard Bernstein, conductor ; Stefan Bauer-Mengelberg, Arnold Gameson, Seymour Lipkin, Howard Shanet, assisting conductors (3rd work) ; Marni Nixon, soprano (4th work) ; Eileen Farrell, soprano, Jess Thomas, tenor (6th work).

One may use subfield $3, however, to organize this information in field 511 more clearly. For example,

245 10 $aBernstein live.$nDiscs 9 & 10$h[sound recording].
505 0# $aDisc 9. An outdoor overture / Arron Copland – Pithoprakta / Iannis Xenakis – Antiphony one / Henry Brant -- Improvisation sur Mallarmâe I / Pierre Boulez – Atlas Ecliptcalis / John Cage -- Disc 10. Scenes from Gèotterdammerung / Richard Wagner.
511 0# $33rd work$aNew York Philharmonic ; Leonard Bernstein, conductor ; Stefan Bauer-Mengelberg, Arnold Gameson, Seymour Lipkin, Howard Shanet, assisting conductors.
511 0# $34th work$aMarni Nixon, soprano.
511 0# $36th work$aEileen Farrell, soprano, Jess Thomas, tenor.

The next example is of a videorecording that includes two productions. A detailed 505 note and brackets in the 511 and 508 fields have been used to differentiate the credits of the two films.

245 00 $aYellow aria$h[videorecording] /$cproduction, Robert Gomez ... [et al.] ; a film by Tina Marie Bastajian. Oyster bar / production, Diana LeBlanc ... [et al.] ; a film by Tina Marie Bastajian.
505 0# $aYellow aria (1986, 13 min., col.) -- Oyster bar (1984, 6 min., b&w).
508 ## $a[Yellow aria] Camera, Marion Swartz. [Oyster bar] Cinematography, Terre Richards.
511 1# $a[Yellow aria] Marcello Sinicomio, Gabriella Grassia, Diviana Ingravallo, Zsuzsa Koszegi.
511 1# $a[Oyster bar] Anne E. Osborn, John A. Moody.

Subfield $3 may facilitate better organization of this credit information. For example,

245 00 $aYellow aria$h[videorecording] /$cproduction, Robert Gomez ... [et al.] ; a film by Tina Marie Bastajian. Oyster bar / production, Diana LeBlanc ... [et al.] ; a film by Tina Marie Bastajian.
505 0# $aYellow aria (1986, 13 min., col.) -- Oyster bar (1984, 6 min., b&w).
508 ## $3Yellow aria$aCamera, Marion Swartz.
508 ## $3Oyster bar$aCinematography, Terre Richards.
511 1# $3Yellow aria$aMarcello Sinicomio, Gabriella Grassia, Diviana Ingravallo, Zsuzsa Koszegi.
511 1# $3Oyster bar$aAnne E. Osborn, John A. Moody.

Another example of using subfield $3 in field 511 is:

245 10 $aJauchzet Gott in allen Landen$h[sound recording] :$baria from Cantata no. 51 for soprano, trumpet, strings and organ /$cJohann Sebastian Bach. Quintet for strings and harp, "Cantilena e scherz" / Gian Carlo Menotti. Folk songs of Britain / arranged by Benjamin Britten. Syrinx : for solo flute / Claude Debussy. Facade / William Walton ; poems by Dame Edith Sitwell.
508 ## $aCharles Wadsworth, artistic director.
511 0# $aChamber Music Society of Lincoln Center members and guests: Barbara Hendricks, soprano ; Gerard Schwarz, trumpet ; James Buswell, Ani Kavafian, violin ; Walter Trampler, viola ; Leslie Parnas, cello ; Alvin Brehm, contrabass ; Charles Wadsworth, organ ; Osian Ellis, harp ; Peter Pears, tenor ; Paula Robison, flute ; Gervase de Peyer, clarinet ; Virgil Blackwell, bass clarinet ; Albert Regni, saxophone ; Richard Fitz, percussion ; Felicia Montealegre, Michael Wager, narrator.
511 0# $3last work$aLeonard Bernstein, conductor.
