Proposal No. 2024-FT04: Adding Subfield $3 to Fields 508 and 511

1. BACKGROUND

Field 508 in the MARC Bibliographic Format is used to record persons or organizations, other than members of the cast, who have participated in the creation and/or production of a resource. It is defined as follows:

Field 511 in the MARC Bibliographic Format is used to record information about the participants, players, narrators, presenters, or performers of a resource. It is defined as follows:

Together, fields 508 and 511 have similar scopes and applications. They are frequently used to record names of participants, performers, narrators, and other creative, technical, and production credits, especially for moving image, performed music, and spoken word resources.

Subfield $3 is defined in a large number of fields throughout the MARC Authority, Bibliographic, and Holdings Formats, but is not present in these fields. Although there is some variation in its definition across different fields, it is generally defined as follows:

$3 - Materials specified (NR)
Part of the described materials to which the field applies.

2. DISCUSSION

The definition of subfield $3 (Materials specified) in fields 508 and 511 was considered, and rejected, by MARBI in Proposal 2002-02. At that time, MARBI participants did not feel there was an immediate need for the definition of subfields $u, $y or $3 in fields 508 and 511, but indicated that the proposal may be raised in the future when a need for the subfields is expressed. This proposal stems from Discussion Paper 2024-DP07, which expressed the need for subfield $3 in these fields, and was presented by PCC SCS at the MARC Advisory Committee 2024 Annual meeting, where it was generally supported by MAC and approved for conversion into a fast-track proposal. We are not reconsidering the other subfields $u or $y as proposed in 2002-02 at this time. We consider the use case for $3 to be primarily a matter of consistency across the MARC formats, but the specific use case for subfield $3 in fields 508 and 511 is especially clear for compilations or aggregates, as illustrated in the examples below.

We note also that subfield $7 (Data provenance) is defined in field 508 but not 511 despite the other similarities between these two fields. Subfield $7 in field 511 was considered in a separate paper, 2024-DP08.

3. PROPOSED CHANGES

In fields 508 (Creation/Production Credits Note) and 511 (Participant or Performer Note) of the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format, define the following new subfield:

$3 - Materials specified (NR)
Part of the described materials to which the field applies.

4. EXAMPLES

Example 1:

508 ## $3 Yellow aria: $a Camera, Marion Swartz.
508 ## $3 Oyster bar: $a Cinematography, Terre Richards.
511 1# $3 Yellow aria: $a Marcello Sinicomio, Gabriella Grassia, Diviana Ingravallo, Zsuzsa Koszegi.

Example 2:

511 0# $3 Japanese language version: $a Voice cast: Irino Miyu, Hayami Saori, Yūki Aoi, Ono Kenshō, Kaneko Yūki, Han Megumi, Toyonaga Toshiyuki.
511 0# $3 English language version: $a Voice cast: Lexi Cowden, Robbie Daymond, Ryan Shanahan, Kira Buckland, Gia Grace, Amber Lee Connors.
[An animated movie with separate voice casts for the Japanese language original and the English language dub.]

Example 3:

511 1# $3 Chasing liberty: $a Mandy Moore, Matthew Goode, Jeremy Piven, Annabella Sciorra, Caroline Goodall, Mark Harmon.
                        [A DVD containing two films.]

5. BIBFRAME DISCUSSION

The BIBFRAME data conversion programs create a bflc:appliesTo resource for data in $3. MARC fields 508 and 511 are converted to the bf:credits property, which is a literal property, and the bflc:appliesTo construct cannot be used with literal properties. However, the conversion of MARC fields 508 and 511 could be changed to incorporate the $3 data.

6. SUMMARY OF PROPOSED CHANGES

In fields 508 (Creation/Production Credits Note) and 511 (Participant or Performer Note) of the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format, define the following subfield:

$3 - Materials specified (NR)
