Sri Lanka: Mediation Boards Planned for Northern Province

(Sept. 29, 2010) The Ministry of Justice of Sri Lanka has announced plans to establish mediation boards for the Northern Province of the country, with one board in each of the 16 divisional secretariats in the province. The new system will give people a way to settle disputes without turning to the courts. The boards will comprise volunteers who are respected in the community. Police officers will send minor disputes to the boards to be resolved. Such mediation boards are common elsewhere in Sri Lanka, handling thousands of matters each week to spare the resources of the courts. The Northern Province, with its capital at Jaffna, was beyond the control of the central government at times during Sri Lanka's 25-year civil war, which ended in May 2009. (Sri Lanka Country Profile, BBC NEWS (May 5, 2010),
