Israel: Broadcasting Emergency Announcements in Various Languages

(Jan. 19, 2010) On January 11, 2010, the Knesset passed an amendment to the Broadcasting Authority, 5725-1965 Law, requiring the broadcasting of emergency announcements related to public health and security in Arabic, Russian, and Amharic, in addition to the Hebrew language. The broadcasting in these languages is necessary because segments of Israel's population are not fluent in the Hebrew language. According to explanatory notes for the Bill, the emergency announcements that require immediate translation relate to mass disasters, radioactivity, dangerous chemicals events, accidents, terrorist activity, war, military operations, and extremely dangerous weather conditions.
