In support of developing the next generation of librarians and information professionals, the Library of Congress welcomed five librarians to its Librarians-in-Residence pilot program this summer. The residency runs from June 11 to December with the possibility of extension.

The program gives early-career librarians the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience and receive mentoring from seasoned staff at the Library.

The five residents were selected from a nationally recruited pool drawn from the 53 American Library Association-accredited graduate programs and they were required to have graduated within the past 18 months.

“The Librarians-in-Residence pilot program allows us to train and mentor some of the new generation of librarians while contributing to the mission and work of the Library,” said Acting Associate Librarian for Library Services Joe Puccio. “We see this as beneficial to all involved, and it is a terrific way to engage graduate programs with us at a national level.”

The residents will participate in enrichment activities, receive training and fulfill job responsibilities as professional librarians.

The selected librarians will receive initial six-month appointments, with a possible extension of up to four months.

The librarians-in-residence (with hometowns, graduate institutions and assignments) are:

  • Kelsey Diemand; Middletown, CT; University of Maryland; Science, Technology and Business Division Reading Room.
  • Zachary Fannin; Madison, WI; University of Wisconsin; U.S. Arts, Science and Humanities Division.
  • Amanda Jenkins; Saint Paul, MN; University of Iowa; Recorded Sound Reading Room.
  • Hanna Soltys; St. Louis, MO; Simmons College; Prints and Photographs Reading Room.
  • Jon Sweitzer-Lamme; Durham, NC; University of Illinois; Preservation Directorate.
