Verny Varela is a renowned D.C.-based arranger, composer, singer and flutist. Varela’s distinguished career as a jazz and salsa artist has included collaborations with Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago and Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez. In 1997, Varela became the lead singer in the Gabino Pampini Band and later toured Europe and the U.S. with Tito Gomez. He has been nominated for the Washington Area Music Awards and has performed at many prominent venues around the Washington, D.C. area including the Kennedy Center Lincoln Theater, Smithsonian, Embassy of Colombia and Embassy of Panama. Varela currently teaches at Howard University.
Presented part of the Library's Summer Concerts on the Lawn series, co-hosted with the Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Arts D.C. project.

The concert series is the latest of many activities that have been presented under the leadership of Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden that seek to make America’s library and its treasures more accessible on-site.
