SUBJECT HEADINGS

Acre War, 1899-1903

The cataloger provided no information from English sources that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed to ensure the proper authorized heading has been formed. More research can be done to support the English heading and other used for headings. The proposal may be resubmitted.

African American women sportswriters; Women sportswriters—United States

The information in the work being cataloged does not pertain to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be submitted with more information.

Autobiographical comic books, strips, etc.--Jewish authors; Autobiographical comic books, strips, etc.--Women authors

Comic books, strips, etc. does not fall under the literature hierarchy and is not considered a major genre of literature, so author group subdivisions may not be used here per instruction sheet H 1156. The proposals were unnecessary.

Automated ships; Automated ships—Law and legislation

The only consulted resource is the work being cataloged. Multiple resources should be consulted to justify the use of the authorized heading. The proposal may be resubmitted with more research into the subject.

Reproductive health clinics

Other headings in this pattern use the term services with a used for term of clinics, see Family planning services as an example. An additional proposal adding the term Reproductive health clinics as a used for term under Reproductive health services was made and will be approved on this list.

Body image in comics

The work being cataloged in the proposal did not present enough evidence to support the definition of body image as it is defined in the Library of Congress subject headings. The definition calls for works “on the visual, mental, or memory image of one’s own body or someone else’s.” The proposal may be resubmitted with more explanation about the context of the work being cataloged.

Chagin family

Family name headings must have either the nationality or the location of the family cited as per H 1631. The inclusion of the language of the family does not imply this information. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cosmopolitanism; Transculturalism, Transculturalism in literature

The concept of transculturalism provided in the proposal is indistinguishable from the existing heading Cultural fusion. The proposal may be resubmitted with more explanation distinguishing the two headings.

Cultural heritage institutions, Cultural heritage institutions—Educational aspects

The 670 fields lack a definition of what is a cultural heritage institution. The proposals may be resubmitted with a clear definition.

Duwamish Indians, Stillaguamish Indians

The library will accept the hierarchical changes that were proposed. The additional used for terms will not be accepted. The Library of Congress will issue a statement about indigenous headings in the future.

Fathers-in-law and daughters-in-law

This heading is too specific for the scope of the Library of Congress subject headings. It is suggested that the cataloger post coordinate the two headings. The heading was not approved.

Fishery law and legislation, International; Fishery management, International—Law and legislation; Sustainable fisheries (International law)

The heading Fishery law and legislation is applied to works about both international and domestic fisheries. These proposals are not necessary.

Folk songs, Greenlandic; Greenlandic literature; Greenlandic poetry

It was decided that the heading Kalâtdlisut for the language would remain the same. Therefore the name changes to these headings are unnecessary.

Formation of the Talmud

The work being cataloged encompasses two headings that can be formed using free-floating subdivisions, Talmud—History and Talmud—Publication and distribution. The proposal was unnecessary.

Geological time and literature

SHM H 310, sec. 1, says, “Establish new headings in the form [ Topic A ] and [ Topic B ] only when the work being cataloged discusses the relationship between the topics from both perspectives and in such broad terms that it could not accurately be described by the use of a main heading and subdivision.” The proposal does not show how literature has an influence on geological time. The proposal was not approved.

Graphic novels—Religious aspects; Graphic novels—Religious aspects—Judaism

The subdivision Religious aspects is usually used to indicate that the topic plays some role in the practice of the religion see H 1998. It is suggested that the cataloger consider the heading Judaism in comics. The proposal was unnecessary.

Haeparang Trail (South Korea); Trails—Korea (South)

There are multiple technical errors in this proposal. Including the qualifier of the 151, the lack of delimiter b in the 670 fields, and the 781 field. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Indigenous students

The way the work being cataloged in the proposal is described leads one to believe that the correct heading to be used is Indian students. The proposal is unnecessary.

Internet of medical things

There are many different types of internets of things in existence. It has been decided that this heading is too specific for LCSH and the cataloger should post-coordinate headings. The proposal is unnecessary.

Islands (International law)

The subdivision Law and legislation applies to both domestic and international law. The cataloger should use the term Islands—Law and legislation. The proposal is unnecessary.

Judaism and comics

SHM H 310, sec. 1, says, “Establish new headings in the form [ Topic A ] and [ Topic B ] only when the work being cataloged discusses the relationship between the topics from both perspectives and in such broad terms that it could not accurately be described by the use of a main heading and subdivision.” The work being cataloged discusses the impact Judaism has on comics but not the way that comics influence Judaism. The proposal was unnecessary.

Judeo-Iraqi language

The proposal makes it appear as if the cataloger is presenting this as a dead language. Some further research should be done because it appears as if there are still speakers of this language. The proposal may be resubmitted.

La Horca Mountain (Lima, Peru)

The heading needs to be proposed as an archaeological site rather than a mountain. The heading may be resubmitted.

Latin Americans in mass media

The proposal does not support the definition of mass media as it is in the Library of Congress subject headings. The more appropriate heading would be Latin Americans in popular culture. The heading may be resubmitted with more evidence of its need.

Leadership, Asian Australian

The Library of Congress subject headings do not use ethnic qualifiers this way for nations other than the United States. The work being cataloged also appears as if it is about people who are leaders rather than about leadership. The proposal was unnecessary.

Online social networks—Educational applications

The work being cataloged appears to be about educational practice. It is suggested that the cataloger propose Online social networks in education. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Peregrino family

It is unclear if the work being cataloged should be about the Peregrino family or the Peregrino-Brimah family. In the case that the work is describing both, two proposals for both families will need to be created. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Minorities in comics

The work being cataloged discusses multiethnic persons in graphic novels. Minorities and multiethnic persons are not synonymous. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mobile clinics; Mobile hospitals

Both of these headings are difficult to differentiate. The cataloger may resubmit these two headings with contrasting scope notes.

Monsters in video games

There needs to be more explanation about the work being cataloged in the 670 field. The heading may be resubmitted.

Native seeds; Native seeds—Protection

Both of these headings are covered by existing headings and free-floating subdivisions in LCSH. The cataloger can use the terms Endemic plants—Seeds and Endemic plants—Seeds—Collection and preservation. The proposals are not approved.

Neighborhoods—Religious aspects; Neighborhoods—Religious aspects—Christianity

The term “good neighbors” has a different meaning than neighborhoods in the context of Christianity as suggested by the work being cataloged. The proposal is not approved.

Postage stamps in mass media

The description of the work being cataloged covers postage stamps as represented in popular culture. The work does not describe mass media as it is defined in the Library of Congress subject headings. The proposal was unnecessary.

Pottery, Kazakh

The work being cataloged describes pottery made by the Samartian tribes. The Library of Congress subject headings has existing headings for artwork created by the Samartian tribes. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Receptivity (Philosophy)

The information about the work being cataloged appears as if the heading should be Receptividad (The Spanish word). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sexual minority community college students

The work being cataloged does not mention community college. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sidekicks in comics; Sidekicks on television

Neither of the works being cataloged in the proposals mention comics or television. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Spasmodic School (English poetry)

The proposal lacks information about what exactly characterizes the Spasmodic School. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Veils in comics

The work being cataloged mentions veiling in reference to hijabs in comics. The proposal for Hijab (Islamic clothing) in comics has been approved on this list. The proposal may be resubmitted with more evidence that the work being cataloged is about veils in general.

Virtue—Religious aspects—Judaism

The subheading religious aspects applies only to headings with no religious implications. Other works on virtue in other religions has the post-coordinated headings. It is suggested that the cataloger use the headings Virtue and Jewish ethics. The proposal was unnecessary.
