CLASSIFICATION

CE78

It is not clear to what era this calendar belongs, thus there is insufficient information to place it correctly in the schedule. Also, it is not clear if this is distinct from the existing number for the Hindu calendar. The proposal may be resubmitted.

N72.K56

The work cataloged is about the symbolism of knives in art through time. The proposal placed this work in the hierarchy of art in relation to other topics. It would be better classed at N8291.K59 as a special subject in the visual arts. The proposal may be resubmitted.

N6494.A78

Artists films are not a special aspect or movement in art, but is its own form of art. As a result, the work is better placed at N7433.65 as a specific type of visual art. A replacement proposal was made. The proposal was not approved.

PJ7810.B85

Literary author numbers for modern authors require an established location in the schedules when they meet one of the requirements in F632 Literary Authors. This author did not meet any of the requirements listed there. The proposal was not necessary.

QA76.9.M47

The proposal was for the concept of the metaverse in computer science. However, in the work cataloged, the metaverse is a concept related to the Internet and therefore will better class at TK5105.8864. The editorial meeting created a replacement proposal. The proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Amputees

The proposal sought to add the several Used For references to the heading, referring to amputees as patients. However, the citation from the work being cataloged did not address amputees as patients, but rather as persons with this condition. The editorial meeting does not wish to add references that blend the heading for person with a condition, etc., and the person as patient. There is mixed practice in the database, and the meeting is currently evaluating the policy relating to these concepts. The proposal was not approved.

Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices), Unaccompanied; Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices) with chamber orchestra; Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices) with instrumental ensemble; Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices) with orchestra; Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices) with piano; Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices) with string orchestra; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices); Choruses, Secular (Treble voices), Unaccompanied; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices) with chamber orchestra; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices) with instrumental ensemble; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices) with orchestra; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices) with piano; Choruses, Secular (Treble voices) with string orchestra

These proposals were all made to accompany the base proposals to add treble voices to LCSH as a qualifier for Choruses, etc. The base proposals are appropriate and will be approved; therefore the related proposals listed here have become unnecessary, as they are free-floating, according to instruction sheet SHM 1917.5 Section 9, a.(1).(b). The only exception is Choruses, Sacred (Treble voices), as it was cited as an example in the base proposals. The SHM will be updated to add treble voices to the list of approved free-floating terms allowed for choruses. The proposals were not necessary.

Hambacher Wald (Germany)

GNS has two different Hambach Forests in different administrative states. The proposal needs to clarify which one of the two is needed for this proposal with appropriate qualifiers. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Women illustrators, American

The heading was proposed to serve as the broader term on Korean American women illustrators. However, the standard broader term for these types of headings is [Class of persons]—United States. A replacement proposal was made for Women illustrators—United States. The proposal was not necessary.

Madi language

A citation for the work being cataloged is a requirement for a proposal that is needed as a subject access point. Further, a high quality reference source for any language proposal is Ethnologue. Ethnologue’s information about this language includes a different preferred name and large number of variant names, which should be taken into account when choosing the heading and adding needed cross-references. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mehweb dialect

The proposal was to establish the name of a dialect. However, there is already an existing heading for the Megeb dialect, which is a variant name for the same dialect. A reference for the name Mehweb dialect was added to the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.

Music—Azerbaijan

According to SHM H 307 Section 1.b, a topic should link only to the next higher level in the hierarchy. This proposal was made to serve as a broader term on a heading that also had the broader term Folk music—Azerbaijan. As the existing broader term is the more specific term in the hierarchy, Folk music—Azerbaijan is the appropriate broader term. The proposal was not necessary.

Older people with disabilities

The proposal sought to add a related term to Frail older people. This relationship does not meet the appropriate criteria for a related term. The proposal is not approved

Paranaíba River

The proposal lacked a work cataloged citation that included English, which is a requirement in SHM H 202 Section 1.a.(6). Also, there should be sufficient information to clarify that the river has been identified clearly, and therefore able to be qualified correctly, as well as all appropriate variants cited and given as cross-references. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Portrait drawing, Ukrainian

Regarding the information recorded in a work cataloged citation, SHM H 202 Section 1.a.(6) clearly states that “The information should support the terminology used in the heading, references, and the scope note (if provided).” The proposal contained some of the needed information, but it did not include the information necessary to justify all elements of the heading. Inferred information is not desirable, as what is obvious to one person is not obvious to another. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Rank badges

Rank badges are not a concept that is limited to a specific time and location. The meeting requests more information to decide the appropriate heading and qualifier to both express the concept and ensure the uniqueness necessary for the specific topic in question. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Wood River (R.I.)

For all names of geographic places in the United States, BGN should be cited fully, including all states covered by the geographic feature and all variant names. This information impacts both the qualifiers used and the cross-references given. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Sports songs

The proposal contains definitions that are extremely broad and lacking in clear identifying elements for the concept. Research by the editorial meeting also found the concept of stadium anthems, which seemed very similar. Sufficient research needs to be done to clearly define what a sports song is, if it is the same thing as a stadium anthem, and how it differs from popular music in general. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fight songs

The proposal added Sports songs as a BT. Once the proposal for Sports songs is clarified, the relationship should be clearer and a broader term can be considered. See the comment below for the proposed scope note addition. The proposal may be resubmitted.

School songs

The proposal attempted to add a contrasting scope note between Fight songs and School songs. Based on J 188 Related Term References, the meeting did not consider this a necessary contrast, as the two headings are already associated as related terms. The proposal is not approved.
