PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: V. Ranieri

CLASSIFICATION

DS262.N37

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Nargis Tepe (Iran) below for details.

DS923.23.H3 and DS923.23.H3

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal for Hallyu (see below), these proposals were not approved.

[DT555.84-.843]

A subject proposal for the 2014 popular uprising should be submitted along with this classification proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

HD9999.D57-.D574

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Digital undertakers and undertaking below for details.

P96.E54-.E542

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with revised subject proposals. See Energy policy in mass media and Communication in the energy industries below for details.

PL2708.A15

While families can be listed as authors of works, they are not established in the Classification schedules with individual literary author numbers. The proposal is not approved.

J9 9.5.P85

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Acquisition of computer systems below for details.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Acquisition of computer systems

Other headings for Acquisition of [ X ] are focused on the acquisitions process for various library materials. Because the work being cataloged in this record does not limit computer systems acquisition to library contexts, the cataloger should consider whether the free-floating construction Computer systems—Purchasing would be a more appropriate heading. The proposal is not approved.

Alpokalja (Hungary)

This proposal was resubmitted from list 2203. The 2203 Summary of Decisions stated, “Only the Hungarian-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The instruction sheet H 202 requires information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.” This resubmitted proposal did not give any additional information about the work being cataloged. Also, online resources indicate that Alpokalja is a region in Hungary, but BGN’s Geographic Names Server indicates that it is an international mountain range. The proposal may be resubmitted again with information in the first 670 citation describing the work being cataloged, in English, and also determining whether this feature should be established as a mountain range or a geographic region.
Bahmaʼī (Iranian people)
Bāmadī (Iranian people) already established. They are in Iran and they also have the BT of Bakhtiari (Iranian people), which is the current name of the Lur tribe that is mentioned in the second citation. This proposal may be resubmitted with information that confirms whether these are in fact two separate tribes, or perhaps a variant spelling of the same tribe.

Bawdy poetry, Czech

The cataloger provided some information in English, but it did not support the language of the poetry. The language of the poetry cannot be assumed from the language of the title, it must be explicitly expressed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Biden family

Proposals to establish family name headings should provide the location of the family (preferably cited from the work being cataloged). SHM H 1631 sec. 3 provides further detailed instructions. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cape Breton Island (N.S.)

Although this island is not a jurisdiction now, Britannica and Wikipedia (both cited in the proposal) both say it was once a separate British colony. The heading has also been used as an author in some OCLC records. This heading should stay in the Name Authority File where it is already established. This proposal to establish it in LCSH is not approved.

Cherokee children

The proposal only contains the title of the work being cataloged, “Indian education in Eastern Oklahoma: a report of fieldwork among the Cherokee”. The proposal should provide evidence that the work being cataloged is about children. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Digital undertakers and undertaking

This proposal seems to conflate two separate topics: the clean-up of a person’s online existence after death, and online reputation management. The topics should be represented by separate headings. In distinguishing between the two topics, the cataloger should also consider how online reputation management is related to data privacy and public relations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Doorson family

Proposals to establish family name headings should provide the location of the family (preferably cited from the work being cataloged) and evidence that a standard reference source was consulted. SHM H 1631 sec. 3 provides further detailed instructions. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Drone (Music)

One comment noted that there did not seem to be much difference between the proposal and the already existing term “Bourdon” in sh 85016119. Another commenter noted that the proposal claims that Bourdon (sh 85016119) and Pedal point (sh 85095482) are specific types of drone. If this is actually the case, both “Pedal point” and “Bourdon” should be NTs of the proposal. However our subject specialists believe that while Pedal point arguably represents a specific compositional technique, that is not necessarily the case for Bourdon. If accepted, then it would be better that Drone (Music) be the term, with Bourdon becoming a UF. The proposal may be resubmitted with a scope note and clear information demonstrating the heading’s relationship to Bourdon, Pedal point, and Drone metal (Music).

Energy policy in mass media and Communication in the energy industries

The first proposal should provide information justifying the phrase “mass media”. Both proposals need additional information distinguishing one from the other. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Evaluative thinking

This concept is not sufficiently distinguishable from Critical thinking to be useful as a separate heading. It will be added as a UF on Critical thinking. The proposal is not approved.

Forced removal of indigenous children, United States, 1869-ca. 1970

The proposal needs to provide more information about the work being cataloged. Also, according to the pattern already established in LCSH, the heading should be Indigenous children—United States—Forced removal and internment, 1869-1970. The cataloger may consider the record for Sixties Scoop, Canada, 1951-ca. 1980 as an example for structuring the UFs and BTs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fortnite (Game)

Individually named games should be established in the Name Authority File. This proposal is not approved.

Glaswerk (Amberg, Oberpfalz, Germany)

According to SHM H 405, factories should be established in the Name Authority File. This proposal is not approved.

Grammar of literature

The meaning of this heading is not clear, and the heading may not be appropriate for the work being cataloged. Most literature would employ the standard grammar of the language used. Would [Language]--Grammar and [Language]--Style be sufficient for the resource being cataloged? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Guardians ad litem

This proposal sought to add Guardian ad litem programs as a UF reference on Guardians ad litem. Guardians ad litem are a class of persons, so the Programs should be established as a separate heading. The proposal is not approved.

Hallyu

This heading is equivalent to Popular culture—Korean influences. Hallyu and Korean wave will be added as UF references on the record for Popular culture—Korean influences. The proposal is not approved.

Ibatín Site (Argentina)

Based on the citations, this place is an extinct city. Since the city existed after 1500, it should be established in the NAF, per SHM H 715, sec. 1. The proposal is not approved.

Iberá Watershed (Argentina)

SHM H 800, sec. 9, states that if the body of water is not yet established, establish a heading for it at the same time that the watershed heading is proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted, along with a proposal for the river.

Imaginary (Philosophy) and Collective memory

The difference between these two headings is not clear. The proposals may be resubmitted with additional citations and contrasting scope notes.

Indo-European languages—Influence on Polish

The citation to the work being cataloged says nothing about influence. Based on the citation, the work appears to be about Old Polish nouns, or aspects of nouns, that are traceable back to the ancestral Proto-Indo-European language. The work might be more appropriately assigned the existing headings Polish language—Etymology; Polish language—To 1500; and Proto-Indo-European language. The proposal is not necessary.

Invisibility in architecture

The last sentences in the citation to the work being cataloged are not clear. The citation mentions both concealment (UF on Secrecy) as well as invisibility, and it is not clear which is the true topic of the work. Why would Secrecy in architecture not be preferred? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Land grabbing and Land grabbing—Law and legislation

The proposal does not provide a clear definition of land grabbing, and it seems to imply a judgement about land acquisitions. The cataloger should consider using some of these headings instead: Vendors and purchasers; Real property, Exchange of; and Consolidation of land holdings. The proposals are not approved.

Mangrove swamps

This proposal sought to add the BT Tidal wetlands to the record for Mangrove swamps. Mangrove swamps can be part of tidal wetlands, but this definition is particular to Australia. Other definitions in various states, etc., do not include that specific a definition. Swamps already has Wetlands as a BT, so the hierarchy is already there, and this more specific level is not needed. The proposal is not approved.

Marta River (Italy) and Marta River Valley (Italy)

The cataloger provided no information in English that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. A brief cataloger’s summary, in English, of the content of the work would be sufficient. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Maylanco River (Bolivia)

The BGN GNS does not have any information about this river, and Wikipedia says it is just the upstream part of the Rocha River. Maylanco will be added as a UF reference on the record for Rocha River. This proposal is not approved.

Nargis Tepe (Iran)

The proposal does not explain what Nargis Tepe is. Is it an ancient city, a monument, or something else? The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information about this heading.

Parc Natural de Sa Dragonera (Spain)

The proposal conflates the park with the island as a natural geographic feature, but in LCSH the two feature types are established separately, per SHM H 1925, sec. 1.d. The cataloger should propose one or the other or both, depending on the content of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Postcards—Private collections

—Private collections is a free floating subdivision under types of objects. The proposal is not necessary.

Prayers (Islamic law)

Other books classed in this area are adequately cataloged with the headings Prayer--Islam and Islamic law. The proposal is not approved.

Present, The

It is not clear how this proposal differs from the established heading Contemporary, The. If they are distinct concepts, both the Present and the Contemporary should have contrasting scope notes. If the cataloger is unable to craft clear scope notes, this heading may be made a UF reference on Contemporary, The. Alternatively, the work being cataloged may not need the heading at all. The cataloger should consider whether the work being cataloged should just have the subject heading Time. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Religion and security

The citation suggests the work being cataloged is about the relationship between religion and national security, not psychological security. The headings National security—Religious aspects and Security, International—Religious aspects are already established and may be used for the work being cataloged. The proposal is not approved.

Right to bodily autonomy

All but one of the citations in the proposal describe the already established headings Sexual rights and Reproductive rights. The cataloger needs to cite sources that distinguish the Right to bodily autonomy from the existing headings Sexual rights and Reproductive rights. The cataloger could also consider adding the heading Patients—Civil rights to the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Scrambling

Alpine scrambling is already established in LCSH and LCC. Scrambling is not sufficiently distinguishable from Alpine scrambling to be useful as a separate heading. The proposal is not approved, but the existing record for Alpine scrambling will be updated: Scrambling will become the heading and Alpine scrambling will appear as a UF reference.

Slovenian students

The cataloger provided no information in English that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Somali Bantu (African people)

The proposal did not demonstrate that usage has changed from Gosha to Somali Bantu, and the scope note is not necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Turkey—History—Ottoman Empire, 1288-1918

The UF reference from Ottoman Empire provides helpful access to the approved heading in LCSH. The proposal to delete the reference is not approved, but dates will be added to the UF in order to distinguish it from the UF that exists in the Name Authority File.

Water grabbing

The proposal does not provide a clear definition of water grabbing, and it seems to imply a judgement about water management. The cataloger should consider using some of these headings instead: Water rights; Right to water; and Water-supply—Management. The proposal is not approved.

Wild swimming

The proposal does not explain what wild swimming is. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Women poets, Norwegian

The cataloger provided no information in English that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. A brief cataloger’s summary, in English, of the content of the work would be sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Flash cards

This proposal should include a definition of the heading being proposed. This proposal may be resubmitted.
