CLASSIFICATION
Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
BP188.16.D54
Dignity is an attribute, rather than an active virtue, so a better class number for this work would be BP190.5.D546. The proposal may be resubmitted.
BV199.D75
The work being cataloged explains how a church in Seoul, Korea has been offering drive-in worship service as COVID-19 forces social distancing. As such, the work should not be classed with liturgy. Instead, it should be classed with particular types of services in the area of BV27-28. The proposal may be resubmitted.
DS79.77
The work being cataloged should be classed under DS79.766.A2-Z because it is a memoir. The proposal was not approved.
DS153.55.Q27
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Qāqīsh (Arab tribe) for details.
N6494.A78 and N6498.A78
These classification proposals may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Artists’ films for details.
PN56.H764
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Human geography and literature for details.
PN1590.R43
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Recollection (Psychology) in the performing arts for details.
PN1995.9.B75
This classification proposal was not approved in accordance with the decision on the subject proposal. See below under Bromance in motion pictures for details.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Eskimo-Aleut languages
Every heading for a minor language has information in the 670 about where the language is spoken so that broader terms can be assigned (i.e., [place]—Languages). The location should not be assumed from the geographically-oriented words used in the heading itself. Also, the Ethnologue citation does not give the language group that Eskimo-Aleut is in, but the language group when it can be identified in an authoritative source. The proposal may be resubmitted with the required additional information.
Eskimo languages and Aleut Language
These proposals should be resubmitted along with the resubmitted proposal for Eskimo-Aleut languages.
Antunes family
The proposal does not include the citations from the Dictionary of American family names, nor does it indicate where the family is from, as required in instruction sheet H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Artists’ films
Motion picture producers and directors can be described as artists, but the proposal lacks a thorough definition of what artists’ films are and what distinguishes them from experimental films. This proposal would benefit from a scope note. Please see H 1250 for definitions of art and fine art, and see Artists’ books for an example of a helpful scope note. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Bromance
The term Bromance was added as a reference on the record for Male friendship. The proposal was not approved.
Bromance on television
The proposal was replaced with a proposal for Male friendship on television, which is approved on this list. The proposal was approved with changes because the term Bromance was not approved.
Children’s literature, Breton
The proposal contains no information in English. Instruction sheet H 202, sec. 1.a.6., says, “All sources that were consulted should be listed either in the 670 (Sources found) or in the 675 (Sources not found) fields. If a 670 field is used, then the location of the information found and the information itself – either quoted or paraphrased in English – should be included in the $b subfield.” The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.
Clowns in motion pictures and Clowns on television
In both proposals the citation for the work being cataloged says that the work is about the clown horror genre. It does not specify motion pictures or television. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Ghosts in the performing arts
The citation to the work being cataloged does not support the phrase being proposed. Better headings for this work would be Actors—Psychology and/or Performing arts—Psychological aspects (both of which are free-floating constructions and do not need to be proposed). This proposal was not necessary.
Hebrew language—Spoken Hebrew, Turkish language—Spoken Turkish, and Ukrainian language—Spoken Ukrainian
At this time, the multiple subdivision that free-floats under languages still exists (H 1154). The instructions regarding the multiples project are unchanged. These proposals were not necessary.
Human geography and literature
The proposal makes it clear that the term “literary geography” is synonymous with the phrase proposed, and it has a clear definition. It is always better to use a single definable term than to construct a [topic] and [topic] heading. The proposal for Literary geography may be resubmitted, and it should include a contrasting scope note with Literary landmarks.
Human rights museums
SHM H 1916, sec. 2.a., says, "Existing phrase headings [for types of museums] may continue to be used but new ones should not be established. "The subdivision --Museums is free-floating under topical headings. The work being cataloged should be assigned Human rights--Museums. The proposal was not necessary.
Language and food
The citation to the work being cataloged seems to indicate that this work is about the words that are used for food in the Japanese language, not about the reciprocal relationship between language and food. SHM H 310, sec. 1, says, “Establish new headings in the form [ Topic A ] and [ Topic B ] only when the work being cataloged discusses the relationship between the topics from both perspectives and in such broad terms that it could not accurately be described by the use of a main heading and subdivision.” This suggests that a better heading for the work being cataloged would be Food—Terminology. Because –Terminology is a free-floating subdivision under topics, no proposal is necessary, and the proposal for Language and food was not approved.
Memory in the performing arts
Unless otherwise specified, a heading like “[topic] in the performing arts” usually means that the work is about the topic as it is portrayed in the performing arts. The citation to the work being cataloged does not make it clear that the heading is appropriate for the work. The proposal may be resubmitted with a more detailed description of the content of the work.
Motion pictures and the September 11 Terrorist Attacks
The work being cataloged should be assigned the headingSeptember 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001, in motion pictures. The proposal was not necessary.
Protest poetry, Polish
Instruction sheet H 202, sec. 1.a.6., says, “All sources that were consulted should be listed either in the 670 (Sources found) or in the 675 (Sources not found) fields. If a 670 field is used, then the location of the information found and the information itself – either quoted or paraphrased in English – should be included in the $b subfield.” The citation to the work being cataloged does not explain in English that this is a work about Polish protest poetry. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Qāqīsh (Arab tribe)
Instruction sheet H 202, sec. 1.a.6., says, “All sources that were consulted should be listed either in the 670 (Sources found) or in the 675 (Sources not found) fields. If a 670 field is used, then the location of the information found and the information itself – either quoted or paraphrased in English – should be included in the $b subfield.” The citation to the work being cataloged lacks any information in English explaining the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Recollection (Psychology) in the performing arts
The citation to the work being cataloged does not make it clear that the heading is appropriate for the work. Is the work about actors’ memory, or about performances that serve as memorials to the dead? The proposal may be resubmitted with a more detailed description of the content of the work.
Sexual minorities’ writings, Polish
The citation to the work being cataloged does not clarify whether this is literature written by Polish sexual minorities—with or without queer themes--which is what this heading means, or if it is queer-themed literature in the Polish language. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sipadan Island Park (Sabah, Malaysia)
Instruction sheet H 1925 sec. 1.a. says, “Establish a heading for a park directly under its own name in the vernacular of the country in which it is located.” Sometimes parks in Malaysia either do not have a vernacular name (they only have an English name), or the vernacular name cannot be found. The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence of a search for the vernacular name.
Television formats
The meaning of this proposed heading is not clear. What is the difference between Television formats and Television programs? Would headings such as Television—Production and direction and Television programs—Plots, themes, etc. be better for this topic? The proposal may be resubmitted with more details and a scope note.
Transsexual people
The proposal does not provide any evidence that general usage has changed from transsexuals to transsexual people. Also, the term Transsexuals appears in at least 16 other headings. If the base heading will be changed to Transsexual people, proposals to change all of the related headings must be submitted at the same time. The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence of a change in usage, along with change proposals for all of the related headings.
Tun Sakaran Marine Park (Sabah, Malaysia)
Instruction sheet H 1925 sec. 1.a. says, “Establish a heading for a park directly under its own name in the vernacular of the country in which it is located.” Sometimes parks in Malaysia either do not have a vernacular name (they only have an English name), or the vernacular name cannot be found. The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence of a search for the vernacular name.
Yamanaka family
Instruction sheet H 202, sec. 1.a.6., says, “All sources that were consulted should be listed either in the 670 (Sources found) or in the 675 (Sources not found) fields. If a 670 field is used, then the location of the information found and the information itself – either quoted or paraphrased in English – should be included in the $b subfield.” The citation to the work being cataloged does not include any information in English. The proposal may be resubmitted.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Paperweights
Such detailed art terms are well-established in the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, and LC Genre/Form Terms does not need to replicate that specialized hierarchy. The proposal was not approved.
Decorative art
Decorative art is an aspect of art, and does not need to be defined more narrowly within LC Genre/Form Terms. Decorative art has been added as an upward reference to Art, and the proposal was not approved.
Sampler albums (Sound recordings); Samples (Music)
These proposals do not justify the related term reference nor explain the relationship between sampler albums and samples. The proposals may be resubmitted, perhaps with a contrasting scope note, rather than a related term reference.
MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS
Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
