CLASSIFICATION

DS904.6.J4

This number was proposed for Jews as an element of the population in Korea. All works on Jews outside Palestine are classed in DS133+, except for Jews in North and South America countries, which are classed in E and F. A proposal in DS135.A-Z may be resubmitted, with a reference from DS904.6.J+.

KZ1179.R38

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Ravensbrück Trials, Hamburg, Germany, 1946-1948, for details.

PH3023.U55

The work is about the depiction of the United States in 19th century Hungarian literature, and should be classified in PH3053.A-Z. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PQ4053.I34

The proposal was for identity as depicted in Italian literature. The subject headings assigned to the work indicate that the work is about Italian national characteristics in Italian literature, which should be classed in PQ4053.N29. The proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Billy Frank, Jr., Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (Wash.)

This proposal was made to change the existing heading and add a UF reference. The heading revision proposed was to remove the commas. Appendix D of the SHM is silent about commas around the abbreviation “Jr.,” so the rules in the Chicago Manual of Style apply. Section 6.43 confirms that the commas are permitted. Furthermore, the commas do not affect searching or display. They were retained.

A UF for the Nisqually State Wildlife Recreation Area was proposed, based on a variant name given in the entry for the national wildlife refuge in GNIS. It seems that the entry in GNIS probably contained an error, given that GNIS also includes a separate entry for the Nisqually State Wildlife Recreation Area, and because it would be unusual for a national wildlife refuge and a state wildlife recreation area to be coextensive.

The changes proposed were not approved, but see below under Black River Unit (Wash.) for other revisions that were made to the record.

Black River Unit (Wash.)

Black River Unit is an administrative unit of the Billy Frank, Jr., Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. SHM H 1925 sec. 1.b says that named administrative units of parks should be provided as UFs on the headings for the parks. The meeting added two UFs to the record for the park, based on the instructions and example given in the SHM: Billy Frank, Jr., Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (Black River Unit) (Wash.) and Black River Unit (Billy Frank, Jr., Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge) (Wash.). The proposal for a separate heading was not approved.

Environmental justice

This proposal was made to add a UF Environmental injustice to the heading. SHM H 373 sec. 3 says, “In headings based on another heading, do not make UF references that repeat alternative spellings or variants that are already covered by a UF reference in the basic heading.” The base heading in this case is Justice, which has a UF Injustice. The proposal was not approved.

Grenfell Tower Fire, London, England, 2017

SHM H 1105, the list of pattern subdivisions for corporate bodies, includes the subdivision –Fire, [date] with the instruction to use it under names of buildings, structures, etc. The meeting approved a heading for the building, Grenfell Tower (London, England). The heading Grenfell Tower (London, England)—Fire, 2017 should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Koh Ker (Extinct city)

SHM H 715 sec. 2 says that a subject heading should not be proposed for an ancient city “if it is clear that the exact original site of the city in question has been continuously occupied until modern times;” a name heading should be created instead. A document on the UNESCO web site indicates that the city of Koh Ker is a living site, and that there has been “continued human habitation, agricultural production, commerce and religious worship [which] have kept the area from turning into a deserted site” (https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/6458).

It appears that Koh Ker should be established in the name authority file. However, if evidence can be found that it was not continuously occupied into modern times, then the proposal may be resubmitted. The proposal should be deleted if it is not going to be resubmitted.

 Noatia (Indic people)

This proposal was made to add references to the existing heading. The UFs being added were for subclans of the Noatia, which may be acceptable as upward UFs (see SHM H 373 sec. 5). However, the BTs being added, Khaklu (Indic people) and Murasing (Indic people) are not appropriate, because they are also subclans, according to the sources cited. A subclan cannot be a BT of a clan, because by definition a subclan is part of a clan. The relationship needs to go in the other direction: Noatia (Indic people) as a BT of Khaklu (Indic people) and Murasing (Indic people).

It looks as though the work being cataloged is about the Khaklu, and the heading Khaklu (Indic people) should be assigned.

Since two of the subclans of the Noatia are separately established, the general preference is to treat the other subclans the same way. As stated above, though, the upward UFs would be an acceptable alternative if it is “clearly impractical” to establish separate headings for each subclan (H 373 sec. 5).

Regardless, proposals to add the BT Noatia (Indic people) to the headings Khaklu (Indic people) and Murasing (Indic people) should be submitted. The proposal for Noatia (Indic people) may also be resubmitted if the upward UFs are desired. The proposal for Noatia should be deleted if it is not going to be resubmitted.

Ravensbrück Trials, Hamburg, Germany, 1946-1948

Trials of the Ravensbrück concentration camp staff by the British military courts occurred in Hamburg between 1946 and 1948. However, trials of Ravensbrück staff by other authorities, including French and East German military courts and Soviet tribunals, were conducted in other cities in other years (see the Holocaust Encyclopedia at https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/ravensbrueck-liberation-and-postwar-trials).

The meeting questions whether this heading should be limited to the British trials in Hamburg, or if its scope should be expanded to cover the other trials, as well, and requests that the sources and works being cataloged be reexamined to determine which approach would be better.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Romsdalen (Norway)

The Columbia Gazetteer seems to indicate that Romsdalen is the valley of the Rauma River. More research should be done to determine whether that is the case, and the proposal should be revised accordingly. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Transportation and tourism

Only the German-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. In addition, a related classification proposal for G156.5.T73 was also proposed, but did not appear on the list. It should be submitted along with the resubmitted subject proposal.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Insect surveys

The meeting does not wish to establish terms for surveys of specific animals. The genre/form term Zoological surveys should be assigned to the work being cataloged, along with subject headings for the insect(s) being surveyed. The proposal was not approved.
