July 16, 2021

PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: E.Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

DK34.V47

This number is for Vietnamese people in the Soviet Union and the former Soviet republics. The subject headings assigned to the work indicate that it is about Vietnamese people in the Russian Federation. DK510.35.A-Z is for ethnic groups in the Russian Federation. The cataloger should reexamine the work and see which number is more appropriate. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GV463.2

High-intensity interval training is a type of aerobic exercise, which should be classed in RA781.15. A reference was added to the schedule in GV to direct users to RA. The proposal was not approved.

HM742

The reference being added is already covered by the reference at HM742-743. The proposal was not necessary.

PN4888.C75

The work being cataloged should class with the event in RA644.C67, per the instruction at PN4888.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PQ7298.12.E769

This author is from Argentina and Uruguay, but this number is for authors from Mexico. The proposal may be resubmitted.

QB22.4

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal for Astronomy, Persian (see below), this proposal was not approved.

The work being cataloged should be classed in QB33.I7 for which no proposal is necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1148, section 4, Art
                                    $y 19th century

                        H 1159, Military services
                                    $x On television

Other decisions:

Astronomy, Persian

According to the general see reference, the adjective Persian is used to qualify headings that represent language. To represent nationality, derivation, or location, use the adjective Iranian or the geographic subdivision Iran. In this case, the cataloger should assign the heading Astronomy—Iran. The proposal was not necessary.

Bánffy family

The cataloger provided no information in English in the proposal. The proposal should identify the English form of the family name, give variant spelling(s) of the name in a source citation, and give the location of the family.

Also, compound family names should not be included as variants (UFs) on non-compounded names. The family name Bánffy family would represent all families named Bánffy, no matter who the progenitor is, and no matter who their relations are. If the compound name, Losonci Bánffy and its variants are needed for the cataloging, the compound name may be established separately and connected to Bánffy family through the application of RTs. (See H 1631, sec. 3.)

Finally, if a URL is cited in the proposal, the appropriate subfield coding should be included.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cetatea Deva (Deva, Romania)

The cataloger did not provide any information from the work being cataloged, and provided only a Wikipedia citation as research. Wikipedia is not considered authoritative for subject proposal purposes, and the information in the Wikipedia citation is probably in the work being cataloged, anyway. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cooking, Portuguese—Azorean style

The cataloger provided no information in English that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. A brief cataloger’s summary, in English, of the content of the work would be sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Digital labor

The proposed heading has an ambiguous meaning at best. The work being cataloged appears to be about the fact that even though the labor is done on a computer, much of it is not dissimilar from factory work done 150 years ago. The meeting could not devise an unambiguous heading that expresses the concept. Subject headings including High technology industries—Employees; Assembly-line methods; and Unskilled labor; were added on the bibliographic record. The proposal was not approved.

Drama—Religious aspects

This concept is covered by the existing heading Religion and drama. A UF Drama—Religious aspects was added to the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.

Egypt, Upper

Britannica academic, viewed online on Jun 22, 2021, under Upper Egypt, says, “In late predynastic times, Upper Egypt constituted a political entity separate from Lower Egypt (the delta region).” A heading should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Erotic poetry, Angolan (Portuguese)

The cataloger provided some information in English, but it did not support the language of the poetry. The language of the poetry cannot be assumed from the language of the title, it must be explicitly expressed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kuncz family

The cataloger provided no information in English in the proposal. The proposal should identify the English form of the family name and give the location of the family in English. (See H 1631 sec. 3.) Also, the cataloger should consider whether this proposal should have an RT to the heading Koontz family and vice versa (H 1631 sec. 3.c.). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Music in historic house museums

LCSH has never established a heading in the form [topic] in [particular type of museum], and the Meeting feels that a heading in that form would be too specific. The work would be sufficiently cataloged by assigning Music in museums along with Historic house museums. The proposal was not approved.

Naṣaf family

The meeting received a comment that this family name should be romanized as Niṣf instead of Naṣaf. The meeting would like for the cataloger to confirm the romanization. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Palacio de Justicia (Bogotá, Colombia)—Siege, 1985, in literature

In LCSH “in literature” should not be appended to a subdivision for an event. Two  headings should be assigned instead: Palacio de Justicia (Bogotá, Colombia)—In literature and Sieges in literature. The proposal was not approved.

Pungmul

LCSH has separate headings for dances and dance music. This proposal conflates the dance and the music. If both concepts are needed, the cataloger should submit separate proposals for Pungmul, one qualified by (Dance) and the other qualified by (Music), and appropriate BTs should be assigned to each. If, as the work cat citation indicates, the work is about the dance, the proposal may be resubmitted as Pungmul (Dance) with BTs that are for the dance.

Rawlah (Arab people)

The meeting received a comment that this people group should be romanized as Ruwalah with a UF Ruwallah. The meeting would like for the cataloger to confirm the romanization. The proposal may be resubmitted.

A classification proposal for DS153.55.R39 accompanied the subject proposal but was not scheduled for this list. The cataloger should make changes to the classification proposal, if necessary, and resubmit it along with the subject proposal.

Refugees in mass media

The title of the work being cataloged and a citation for a subject heading in the British Library’s catalog are not sufficient to support this proposal. The cataloger should give a brief summary of the work being cataloged, showing how the work relates to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Romblomanon language

The cataloger did not provide a citation to a work being cataloged, and did not provide any citations that support the deletion of the UFs for Basi language and Bisaya language, or the addition of the UFs Basaya language and Bisi language. The proposal may be resubmitted with supporting citations.

Surabaya bombings, Surabaya, Indonesia, 2018

The citations do not support the use of “Surabaya bombings” as conventional name, instead treating it as a general appellation. The only reference source consulted was Wikipedia, and Wikipedia is not considered to be authoritative for subject proposal purposes.  Additional research should be done to determine whether the phrase really is a conventional name. If not, then the heading Bombings—Indonesia—Surabaya should be assigned. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Szegedy family

The cataloger provided no information in English in the proposal. The proposal should identify the English form of the family name and give the location of the family. Also, the variants (UFs) of the name are unusual, so the meeting would like the cataloger to provide support for the UFs and explain what they mean if they are to be kept. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Tattooing—Law and legislation

The cataloger provided no information in English that relates the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. A brief cataloger’s summary, in English, of the content of the work would be sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Veče

The cataloger did not provide a citation supporting the UF being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Conceptual art

The LCGFT manual states in the introduction that "Genres and forms may be broadly defined as categories of resources that share known conventions." Conceptual art, by its very nature, does not share known conventions in the LCGFT sense. In conceptual art, the idea represented is more important than the finished product. To apply this term in cataloging would require catalogers to make value judgments because there is no objective way to judge the artist’s intent. The proposal was not approved.
