Cutters based on the word Negroes

This list includes proposals to cancel the 40 cutters that were based on the word Negroes. The replacement cutters are based on the word Blacks. For example, D547.N4, Negroes in World War I, was replaced by D547.B64, Blacks in World War II.

Other decisions

PA6029.F53

This proposal was made for a work on the treatment of fides in Roman literature. The subject heading Fides (The Latin word) is used for etymological works about the word. The work being cataloged does not appear to be about the way the word fides was treated in literature, but the way that “good faith” was depicted. The closest English concept to good faith seems to be trust. A proposal may be resubmitted for PA6029.T+, trust as treated in Roman literature.

PF3599.V65

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal for Volksgemeinschaft (The German word) (see below), this proposal may be resubmitted.

PN2934.27.N36

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal for Nant'a (see below), this proposal was not approved.

PQ4617.C2714

Evandro Campello appears to have been a lawyer, not a literary author. The work being cataloged is a collection of academic disputations and orations, and should be classed with the subject matter or in Campello’s biography number as a lawyer. The proposal was not approved.

Table DS-DX5 .x48 and related proposals

There was not enough information given in the proposal to determine the intent of the proposal, and the bibliographic record is not of any assistance because it does not include a class number, subject heading, or summary. The proposal may be resubmitted with information from the work being cataloged.

Announcements

Internment camps; Concentration camps

The heading Concentration camps was cancelled and replaced with the headings Nazi concentration camps and Internment camps on List 2104 (April 2021). List 2106a consisted of additional proposals cancel headings that included the phrase “concentration camp” and replace them with two headings. For example, Concentration camp buildings was cancelled in favor of Internment camp buildings and Nazi concentration camp buildings. List 2106a also included proposals to adjust BTs on other headings.

Video games

In response to a report from the Joint OLAC/SAC Task Force on Preferred Titles for Games, the meeting has decided that titles of individual video games should now be established in the name authority file and headings for video game franchises should be established as subjects in the form [title of franchise] video games, with the BT Video games. For example, Angry Birds: Star Wars should be established in the NAF since it is one title, while Angry Birds video games should be established in LCSH to represent the franchise. SHM H 405 will be updated to reflect this decision.

Headings for video games in LCSH will be examined individually to determine whether each should be cancelled and reestablished in the name authority file, or be revised and retained in LCSH.
In addition, LCSH currently includes the headings Computer games, Electronic games, Internet games, and Video games. While there probably were distinctions among the headings when they were established (for example, Video games seems to have been intended for arcade games, and Computer games, for games played on home gaming consoles), the distinctions have been lost over time. It is also doubtful that the distinctions between the headings would be useful or intuitive going forward, even if they could be determined and contrasting scope notes provided. Therefore, on a future list the headings Computer games, Electronic games, and Internet games will be cancelled and become UF references to Video games, which seems to be the most common terminology.

PTCP thanks the Joint OLAC/SAC Task Force on Preferred Titles for Games for their recommendations and report.

Other decisions:

27N (Movement)

The research provided in the proposal, which consists of citations to 27N’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, makes it sound as if 27N is a corporate body, not a social movement. Social movements can have Facebook and Twitter accounts, though, so the meeting requests that information about the scope, activities, membership, etc., of 27N be included in the proposal. That information will determine whether 27N should be established in the name authority file or in LCSH. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Animal Crossing (Game); Pokémon Shield (Game); Pokémon Sword (Game)

These three proposals were for individual games, and should be established as titles in the name authority file. See the announcement above video games, above, for more details. The proposals were not approved.

Art, Śuṅga

This proposal was made to add UFs with variant spellings of the word Śuṅga, which should be included on the heading for the Śuṅga dynasty instead. The proposal was not approved.

Bataclan (Paris, France)

The citation for the work being cataloged did not provide any information in English; the only information in English was contained in a Wikipedia citation. Wikipedia is not considered to be authoritative for subject proposal purposes (see SHM H 202 sec. 1.b).
This is a straightforward proposal, and the necessary information – the name, address, location, and purpose of the building – is probably given in the work being cataloged and can be translated into English for the proposal. The Bataclan’s website probably also gives the same information, which can also be translated. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Belly dance and intellectuals

SHM H 310 sec. 1 says that new headings in the form [Topic A] and [Topic B] should be proposed only when the work being cataloged discusses the relationship between the topics from both perspectives and in broad terms. The information from the work being cataloged says only that its parallel title is “The secret passion: intellectuals and belly dancing,” which does not support the heading being proposed.

The headings Belly dancing and Intellectuals—Recreation, or another appropriate heading, should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Bible stories, Ladino

Only the Ladino-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Birrīshīyah family

It seems that the full name of the prominent family member cited in the proposal, Sidi Mūsá Al-Birrīshī, implies that the family name is al-Birrīshī, not Birrīshīyah, which may be used more like an adjective than a family name. The meeting requests that the work be reexamined to determine whether the heading would be better as Birrīshī family; a UF should be made from Birrīshī family, if not.

In addition, the Arabic script and romanization provided from page 4 of the cover is not consistent with the form found on the title page and should be reexamined. If the transcription is correct, then an additional UF should be provided for the form of the family name found on page 4 of the cover.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Carolina mantleslug

This species was covered by the heading Philomicus carolinensis. The meeting made a proposal to revise the existing heading to Carolina mantleslug. The proposal for the additional heading Carolina mantleslug was not necessary.

Consular jurisdiction

This proposal was made to allow for geographic subdivision of the existing heading. Neither of its BTs may be subdivided geographically, and it is unclear what geographic subdivision would mean. For example, would Consular jurisdiction—France mean the jurisdiction held by the foreign consular offices in France, or the jurisdiction of French consular offices in other countries?

The scope note on Consular law (one of the BTs of Consular jurisdiction) says that works on the law governing the consular service of an individual country are entered under Diplomatic and consular service qualified by nationality. Headings of that type may be subdivided geographically.

The work being cataloged should be assigned the heading Consular jurisdiction along with a heading in the form Diplomatic and consular service, [nationality]—[place]. The proposal was not approved.

Cooking, Indic—Kashmiri style

The concept is covered by the heading Cooking, Kashmiri. The proposal was not necessary.

Dance in motion pictures, television, etc.

Although more research is needed, it seems from the information provided that dancefilm or videodance may be a specific form or genre. A cataloger’s note in the proposal indicated that it seems impractical to establish a separate heading for it, but there is precedent in LCSH. For example, Apocalyptic films is used for works about apocalyptic films, while Apocalypse in motion pictures is used for works that are about the theme of apocalypse as depicted in films that are not apocalyptic films (see the scope notes). A proposal for dancefilm or videodance as a separate heading may be resubmitted if additional research shows that it is indeed a separate form or genre.

Entrepreneurship education

SHM H 2110 sec. 1 says that phrase headings for education are established only for broad disciplines. Entrepreneurship is a topic in the discipline of business, so entrepreneurship education is too narrow for a phrase heading. Entrepreneurship—Study and teaching should be assigned to works that are specific to entrepreneurship education. The proposal was not approved.

Gorges Cave (Amange, France)

Only the French-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Indigenous art

This proposal was made to add a contrasting scope note with Indigenous arts to the existing heading. The contrasting scope notes appear on the headings Art and Arts, which are the broader terms for Indigenous art and Indigenous arts, respectively. The proposal was not necessary.

LawGermanyRoman influences

LawRoman influences is a UF to Roman lawInfluence, and the heading Law, GermanicRoman influences also exists. Only the German-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal, so it is unclear whether the work is about Roman influences on the law of Germany, or Roman influences on the Germanic system of law more generally. If the former, then Roman law–Influence should be assigned with Law—Germany; if the latter, then Law, Germanic–Roman influences should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Nant'a

Nant'a is the title of a single theatrical performance that debuted at the 1999 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, not a theatrical form. It should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Olympic Way (N.S.W. and Vic.); Hume Highway (N.S.W. and Vic.)

Both of these proposals were based on the same work, Melbourne to Sydney via Hume Highway & Olympic Way. The fact that Melbourne is in Victoria and Sydney is in New South Wales is not sufficient evidence to say that Olympic Way and Hume Highway are also both in New South Wales and Victoria. The meeting requests that research be done on the extent of each of the roads, and that the qualifiers be adjusted to match the actual extent if necessary. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Parliament Buildings (Victoria, B.C. : 1859-1898)

The proposal did not provide any evidence that these buildings were called the Parliament Buildings. It seems that the form of heading may have been based only on the pattern cited, Parliament Buildings (Toronto, Ont.), but headings for buildings are based on the building name as found in the work being cataloged and in reference sources, not on headings for other buildings that serve similar functions.

The meeting requests that research be done to determine the name of the parliament buildings in Victoria, and adjust the heading as necessary. If evidence that they were called Parliament Buildings is found, that evidence should be cited in the authority record. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Philomycus

This genus was covered by the heading Philomicus. The meeting made a proposal to revise the existing heading to Philomycus. The proposal for the additional heading Philomycus was not necessary.

Plus-size women

LCSH already contains the heading Overweight women. While not all plus-size women are overweight, the work being cataloged – which uses the phrase “plus-size woman” in the title – describes an exercise program for overweight women. The heading Overweight women should be assigned to match the contents of the work. The proposal was not approved.

Turkey in textbooks

SHM H 2187 sec. 3 says that headings of the type [topic] in textbooks are assigned to works on the presence of a topic in textbooks not devoted to that topic. From the information provided in the proposal, the work being cataloged appears to be about a textbook of Turkish history, to which Turkey—History—Textbooks should be assigned. The proposal was not necessary.

Turnberry Airfield (Scotland)

According to SHM H 405, all military installations that have been active since 1899 are established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Vaccination

This proposal was made to add the BT Medicine, Preventive to the existing heading. The proposed BT is too broad for the heading, which already has the BT Communicable diseases—Prevention. The proposal was not approved.

Volksgemeinschaft (The German word)

Only the German-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Women in church work—Presbyterian Church

The concept is covered by the heading Women in church work—Presbyterians. The proposal was not necessary.

World War, 1914-1918Evacuation of civiliansCanada; World War, 1939-1945Evacuation of civiliansCanada [and six other proposals with varying geographic subdivisions]

These proposals sought to change the existing headings World War, 1914-1918Evacuation of civiliansCanada and World War, 1939-1945Evacuation of civilians[place] to World War, 1914-1918Forced removal of civiliansCanada and World War, 1939-1945Forced removal of civilians[place], respectively. New headings, instead of heading revisions, should have been proposed because countries that forcibly removed civilians also may have evacuated civilians for their own safety. Take for example the heading World War, 1939-1945Evacuation of civiliansAustralia, which was proposed for revision. In addition to forcibly removing and interning Italians, the government also evacuated the city of Darwin before it was bombed by the Japanese in 1942. Therefore, World War, 1939-1945Evacuation of civiliansAustralia needs to remain a valid heading.

The meeting did agree with the intent of the proposals. It approved a new free-floating subdivision for use under wars, –Forced removal of civilians, and made proposals for new headings. The proposals to revise the headings were not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Electronic books

Electronic books constitute a carrier, not a genre or form, and carriers are not eligible for LCGFT. The proposal was not approved.

Emulations

The citations in the proposal provide a definition of emulation, but do not provide sufficient evidence that works created through emulation are called emulations. The meeting requests that more research be done to provide some use cases. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mobile apps

Electronic books constitute a carrier, not a genre or form, and carriers are not eligible for LCGFT. The proposal was not approved.
