CLASSIFICATION

DB851.57.B35

There is not a subject heading for the people group, so the cataloger should submit a subject proposal. The classification proposal may be resubmitted at the same time that a proposal is submitted for the people group.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Anosy (Madagascar : Region)

As the 670s indicate, this is a jurisdictional region. It should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Art in prisons

The existing heading Prisoners as artists has been used in the past to cover this concept. A UF Art in prisons will be added to the existing heading Prisoners as artists. The proposal was not approved.

Dhaka Nawab family

In this proposal, the term Dhaka is an indication that the family is from Dhaka, and the term Nawab is an honorific conferred on an autonomous or semiautonomous ruler of a state. Therefore, Dhaka Nawab is not a family name, it appears to be an honorific title. Khwaja appears to be the actual name of the family that was honored as Dhaka Nawab family. The cataloger should consult H 1631 and H 1574, and decide whether the title of the family or the family name is required for cataloging. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fish Creek (Big Lake Region, Alaska); Fish Creek (Red Shirt Lake Region, Alaska)

This list included proposals for two rivers named Fish Creek in Manatuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. SHM H 810 sec. 2.b(1) states that LCSH does not distinguish among multiple features of the same type, with the same name, in a single county of the United States. (Alaskan boroughs are equivalent to counties in other states.) Instead, there should be one heading, and the record should include a 667 field stating that the heading is undifferentiated. In addition, geographic features are qualified by their jurisdiction (see H 810), not by the name of a region based on a geographic feature. The proposal for Fish Creek (Big Lake Region, Alaska) was modified to Fish Creek (Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska), UFs were added for the variant names, and the 667 field was also added.  The proposal for Fish Creek (Red Shirt Region, Alaska) was not approved.

Gileppe Dam (Belgium)

The cataloger should cite the website found with Google, not Google itself. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mahābhārata—Characters; Mahābhārata characters in art

LCSH includes the heading Characters and characteristics in the Bible, which may be used as a pattern for this heading. The proposal for Mahābhārata—Characters is approved on this list in the form Characters and characteristics in the Mahābhārata, which may be assigned along with the existing heading Characters and characteristics in art. The proposal for Mahābhārata characters in art was not approved.

Medicine, Malay

The subdivision --Medicine is authorized for use under ethnic groups; therefore, the existing heading Malays (Asian people)—Medicine should be assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Names, Tamil

The work is about Tamil personal names, and should be assigned Names, Personal—Tamil. The proposal was not necessary.

Rāmāyaṇa characters in art; Vālmīki. Rāmāyaṇa—Characters

The decision for these proposals reflects the decision for the Mahābhārata, above. The proposal for Rāmāyaṇa characters in art is approved on this list in the form Characters and characteristics in the Rāmāyaṇa, which may be assigned along with the existing heading Characters and characteristics in art. The proposal for Vālmīki. Rāmāyaṇa—Characters was not approved.

Social work teachers

This proposal for teachers of social work included a UF Social work educators. Educators and teachers are very different concepts in LCSH, and should not be conflated in a heading. Without access to the book, the meeting cannot determine whether Social work teachers, Social work educators, or both, is/are appropriate. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Yaḥyá family

According to the citations, the name in the heading is Arabic but the names in some of the proposed added UFs are Hebrew, Aramaic or Italian.  If needed for cataloging, the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Italian variants should be established separately and connected with the proposed heading, and each other, by RT references, per SHM H 1631 sec. 3.c. It appears that only the Hebrew form of the family name is needed for the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted along with separate proposal(s) for the Hebrew and/or other form(s) of the name.
