SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1156, Literatures
                                    $x Jaina influences

            Other decisions:

258 1/2 Washington Street, Bogardus Building (New York, N.Y.)

This building is represented by the heading 258-262 Washington Street (New York, N.Y.), which was approved on List 2005 (May 2020). The proposal was not necessary.

Casa del Mutilato (Ancona, Italy)

The citations in the proposal included useful information, but did not provide the name of the building. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Crăciun family

The citations in the proposal included useful information, but did not provide the name of the family. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Decoration and ornament, Rwandan

Decoration and ornament may be qualified by ethnicity and time period (e.g., Decoration and ornament, Iban; Decoration and ornament, Medieval). Decoration and ornament in a place is brought out with a geographic subdivision. The heading cited as the pattern, Decoration and ornament, Iranian, was incorrectly formulated and was revised to Decoration and ornament—Iran on this list. Decoration and ornament—Rwanda should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal for Decoration and ornament, Rwandan was not approved.

Horror tales, Sri Lankan (English)

The citation for the work being cataloged does not indicate the relationship of the proposal to the work, and the title is ambiguous. A brief summary or description of the work should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kos minars

According to the information provided, “kos minars” translates to “mile pillars.” Mile pillars has been added as a UF to Milestones, and Milestones—India should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal for Kos minars was not approved.

Kyrgyz; Kyrgyzstanis

These proposals sought to establish separate headings for Kyrgyz and Kyrgyzstanis. The heading Kyrgyz has been used for both groups since Kyrgyzstan was established. The groups are different; Kyrgyz is an ethnic group whose members live primarily in Kyrgyzstan, but are also found throughout Central Asia, and Kyrgyzstanis refers to the citizens of Kyrgyzstan regardless of ethnicity.

The reference sources cited indicate that both Kyrgyz and Kyrgyzstani are used to designate the nationality, and that fact is borne out by a survey of the literature published. It is difficult to determine whether any particular work is about the ethnicity or the nationality.
The CIA World Factbook indicates that over 75 percent of Kyrgyzstanis are ethnically Kyrgyz, and Joshua Project shows that over 88 percent of the Kyrgyz in Central Asia live in Kyrgyzstan. Therefore, there is considerable overlap between the two groups.

As a practical matter, it is more useful to have a single heading for ethnic Kyrgyz and Kyrgyzstanis because establishing separate headings for them would make cataloging more difficult and has the potential to cause similar works to be separated.

The heading Kyrgyz will continue to be used for both groups. A UF Kyrgyzstanis was added to the heading. A scope note was also added to explain the exceptional dual usage.

The proposal for Kyrgyzstanis as a separate heading was not approved.

Malo Kosovo (Kosovo : Region)

The citations provided indicate that Malo Kosovo is a basin and that the main river in this region is the Llap. In addition, two of the UFs given in the proposal are Llap (Kosovo : Region) and Lab River Region (Kosovo). It therefore seems that Malo Kosovo is the region of the Lab/Llap River.
According to SHM H 760 sec. 1.e(1), a region that is associated with a geographic feature but is well known by an alternative name form may be established under the alternative form, but a UF must be provided from the form that would have been constructed on a free-floating basis from the name of the geographic feature. Therefore, a heading for the river must be proposed and established before the UF can be made.

The meeting also requests that information from the work being cataloged be provided in English, and that the qualifier “Region” be reconsidered in light of H 760 sec. 1.e(2), which states that such a qualifier should be used only if there is a conflict. The citations did not provide evidence of a conflict.

The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the river.

Schleswig (Germany and Denmark)

This proposal was made to move the heading for Schleswig from the name authority file to LCSH. The only support for the proposal was provided in a 667 field that was copied directly from the name authority record. Field 667 is not used that way in LCSH. Instead, authoritative reference sources should be consulted and cited in the proposal. Please see SHM H 690 for the research requirements for geographic places. Given the nature of this place, Britannica or another general reference source should also be consulted in order to provide a brief historical synopsis. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Svatá Hora (Czech Republic)

A cataloger’s comment in the proposal indicated that Svatá Hora was proposed so that it could be used as a qualifier for a monastery that is being established in the name authority file. Geographic features established in LCSH cannot be used as geographic qualifiers for entities established in the NAF. If the monastery needs to be qualified, the qualifier should reflect the jurisdiction that is most closely associated with the monastery, Příbram. The proposal was not necessary.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Mixed media (Music)

This proposal refers to a compilation of various media that are used to perform a piece of music. The LCMPT term mixed media should be assigned. The genre/form proposal was not approved.

Music theater; Musical theater

According to the cataloger’s comment in the proposal, these proposals were made, at least in part, to correct a possible error in the scope note for Musical theater. The cataloger’s note also questioned the usefulness of Musical theater as a term, and suggested that it could be cancelled.
The meeting requests that research supporting the proposed scope notes be cited in the records, and that the scope notes be revised to follow the LCGFT style. Research requirements for genre/form proposals are explained in instruction sheet J 160 of the draft genre/form manual, and examples of scope notes are given in J 195. The proposals may be resubmitted.
