Announcement
Cancellation of multiple subdivisions used under personal name headings
Three free-floating multiple subdivisions have been cancelled as part of the LCSH multiples cancellation project. Pertinent SHM instruction sheets will be revised, and affected authority records will be cancelled or revised offlist, as is the practice with this project. Below are the new policies for cataloging works about a person’s career, knowledge of a specific topic, or relations with a specific class of persons or ethnic group.
- Subdivision –Career in [specific field or discipline]. Assign the name heading for the person without further subdivision to works limited to describing events in a person’s occupational life or participation in a profession or vocation, or that discuss the person’s actual substantive contributions or accomplishments in a specific field or topic, whether made as a result of a vocation or an avocation. Assign an additional heading for the field or discipline.
- Subdivision –Knowledge–[specific topic]. Assign the name heading subdivided by –Knowledge and learning to works discussing the person’s knowledge of a specific topic, whether explicitly stated or inferred from his or her life and work, and for discussions of the person’s educational background in a specific topic. Assign an additional heading for the specific topic. Also assign the subdivision –Knowledge and learning to works about the person’s formal or informal learning or scholarship in general.
- Subdivision –Relations with [specific class of persons or ethnic group]. Assign the personal name heading without subdivision to works about the person’s relationship with a specific class of persons or ethnic group. Assign an additional heading for the class of persons or ethnic group, with appropriate subdivision if necessary.
The free-floating subdivisions –Relations with men and –Relations with women, which are used under names of persons for works on their intimate relations with men and women, respectively, remain valid. The subdivisions –Adversaries, –Contemporaries, –Disciples, –Employees, –Family, and –Friends and associates also remain valid, and represent the person’s relationships with those groups.
The multiple subdivision –Views on [specific topic] under the headings for William Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln has also been cancelled, and the authority records will be cancelled offlist. The free-floating use of this subdivision was discontinued in 2004. Going forward, works on the views of Shakespeare or Lincoln on particular topics should be cataloged the same way that similar works about other people are treated: assign the name heading for the person and an additional heading for the topic.
Other decisions:
260 Washington Street, Bogardus Building (New York, N.Y.)
The heading 258-262 Washington Street (New York, N.Y.) was approved on List 2005 to represent several buildings that were used as warehouses for Liang Stores. The proposal on this list for 260 Washington Street was not approved.
Aklatang Bayan (Group of writers)
Aklatang Bayan functioned as a business enterprise and should be established in the name authority file, according to footnote 14 of SHM H 405. The proposal was not approved.
Ambassador Theatre (New York, N.Y.)
The Ambassador Theatre was established in the name authority file because it was needed as a descriptive access point. The name authority record was revised to conform DCM Z1 provisions for Group 2 entities established in the NAF. The proposal was not approved.
ASEAN countries
SHM H 760 sec. 1.e(4) provides ASEAN countries as an example of a region that is based on the name of a regional organization and should not be established. According to the instruction sheet, Southeast Asia and the name heading for the organization should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.
Bacteriophage phi 6—Evolution
The meeting does not wish to begin using the subdivision –Evolution with individual viruses. Instead, the heading Viruses—Evolution may be assigned along with the heading for the specific virus. The proposal was not approved.
Brain—Development; Neurons—Development
These proposals were made for a work about neurogenesis of the brain. Neurogenesis is covered by the heading Developmental neurobiology, which has an NT for Nervous system—Growth. The subdivision –Growth is free-floating under organs and regions of the body (H 1164). Further, the general see also reference under Developmental biology says that the free-floating subdivision –Differentiation is used under organs and regions of the body.
The work may be cataloged by assigning Brain—Differentiation, Brain—Growth, Neurons—Differentiation, and/or Neurons—Growth. The proposals were not approved.
Right to labor
This proposal was made to revise the BT Human rights to Economic rights. The right to work could be an economic, social, or civil right, so the BT Human rights is appropriate. The proposal was not approved.
Malaya—History—Malayan Emergency, 1968-1989
The only reference source cited in the proposal was Wikipedia, which is not considered to be authoritative for proposal purposes. The meeting searched several English-language reference sources and was unable to find the phrase “Malayan Emergency” in relation to this time period. The cataloger should provide citations to reference sources that name the event and describe it. If the reference sources are not in English, the information found in them should be translated into English. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Corn—Phenology—Climatic factors
According to Merriam-Webster, phenology is a branch of science dealing with the relationship between climate and periodic biological phenomena, so the heading string that was proposed is redundant. Corn—Phenology should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
Regeneration (Biology)—Morphological aspects
The work being cataloged is about the morphological aspects of regeneration in an individual species. The subdivision –Morphological aspects does not exist in LCSH, and the meeting does not wish to create it. The subdivision –Morphology is free-floating under headings for plants and animals. The heading for the species subdivided by –Morphology should be assigned, postcoordinated with Regeneration (Biology). The proposal was not approved.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae—Growth—Regulation
The meeting does not wish to introduce the use of the subdivision –Growth—Regulation under headings for individual species. The work may be assigned [species]—Growth with Microbial growth—Regulation. The proposal was not approved.
Sansin (Korean deities)
The Korean word sansin means mountain gods. The heading Mountain gods—Korea should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
Liaison librarians
This proposal was made to revise the existing heading Subject specialist librarians to Liaison librarians. The terms are not synonymous because not all liaison librarians are subject specialists, and not all subject specialist librarians are liaisons. Instead of revising the existing heading, therefore, the meeting decided to establish Liaison librarians as a separate heading. The proposal to revise the heading Subject specialist librarians was not approved.
Tropical birds
The heading Birds may be subdivided geographically. The heading Birds—Tropics should be assigned to works on tropical birds. The proposal was not approved.
Temple of Sardus Pater ad Antas
Headings for named buildings should be qualified by the name of the place in which they are located (SHM H 1334 sec. 3). The Temple of Sardus Pater ad Antas is in Fluminimaggiore, Italy, which is not yet established in the name authority file. The place name should be established and the qualifier added to the proposed heading and UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Heat adaptation
This proposal was made to revise the BT Adaptation (Biology) to Thermal adaptation. The proposal for thermal adaptation was approved on this list, but the meeting does not wish to create hierarchy under it. The BT for Heat adaptation will remain as-is. The proposal was not approved.
Toxic masculinity
Toxic masculinity is the extreme adherence to the suite of behaviors that are traditionally associated with masculinity. Masculinity itself is a continuum, and the heading Masculinity is assigned to works about masculinity in all of its guises, regardless of whether an author or editor thinks that masculinity is good, bad, or indifferent. The work may be cataloged by assigning Masculinity, subdivided by –Social aspects if appropriate. A host of other headings may be assigned to bring out specific traits that are discussed in individual works about toxic masculinity (e.g., Aggressiveness; Bullying; Male domination (Social structure); Misogyny; Remoteness (Personality trait); Toughness (Personality trait)). The proposal was not approved.
White fragility
LCSH does not include any headings that ascribe an emotion or personality trait to a specific ethnic group or race, and the meeting does not want to begin the practice. Instead, headings such as Anger; Defensiveness (Psychology); Fragility (Psychology); Race awareness; Resentment; Whites—Attitudes; and Whites—Psychology may be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
