PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

HQ73.2

Juvenile works in this area have been classed in HQ73, General works. The meeting prefers to continue that practice. The proposal was not approved.

 [TK7881.413-.4153]; TK7881.413; TK7881.415

There is a general biography number for this area at TK7806-TK7807, which should be used for the work being cataloged. It is preferable to use the general form numbers for an area rather than dispersing the forms throughout the area unless a pattern of dispersal is already established in that area of the schedule. The proposals were not approved.

 TP1180.T49

All polyolefins are thermoplastic; therefore, TP1180.P67 should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1147, Animals
$x Feces $x Molecular aspects (May Subd Geog)

                        H 1180, Plants and Crops
$x Effect of hydrogen sulfide on (May Subd Geog)

            Other decisions:

3D-printed artificial flowers

Three-dimensional printing is a process by which almost anything can be reproduced, and the technology will likely become even more pervasive in the future. In order to avoid establishing a duplicate structure in LCSH for three-dimensional printed objects, the concepts should be post-coordinated. A separate heading, Three-dimensional printing, should be assigned if that aspect of the topic is considered important. The proposal was not approved.

Alchemy—Religious aspects—Tantrism

Tantrism is not a religion, but a branch of Hinduism. The cataloger should use Alchemy—Religious aspects—Hinduism, which is established. The proposal was not approved.

Animals—Food—Detection; Fishes—Food—Detection

The meaning of this subdivision combination is highly ambiguous. It could mean how animals find food in the wild, or it could mean analyzing the digestive track, or examining animal feces to identify food that was eaten. The latter appears to be the topic of the work being cataloged. The cataloger should assign separate headings to bring out the appropriate topics, such as Animals—Food; Animal droppings—Molecular aspects (approved on this list); Food—Analysis; etc. The proposals were not approved.

Antiheroes in popular culture

An antihero is a fictitious character type (see the hierarchy for Antiheroes). The work is about four real people, Che Guevara, Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur, and Osama bin Laden. The heading was not necessary for the work. The proposal was not necessary.

Canary rockfish fisheries

This proposal was made to change the BT from Fisheries to Sebastes fisheries. In order to avoid constant maintenance of the fisheries hierarchy, and to avoid establishing intermediate levels of hierarchy unless they are specifically needed for the works being cataloged, the hierarchy was flattened. Going forward, all types of fisheries will have the broader term Fisheries. The proposal was not approved.

Feather art

The work being cataloged is about sculpture that is made of feathers and wire. In LCSH, [topic] in art headings represent both the topic as it is portrayed in art and the topic as art. In other words, the heading Feathers in art means the portrayal of feathers in art and feathers as they are used in artworks (i.e., feathers as art). The subject heading Feathers in art should be assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Flea markets in art

The work being cataloged appears to be about an artist and his/her work that consists of secondhand postcards that were collected at flea markets. The postcards do not appear to feature flea markets as their subject matter. The existing heading Postcards in art should be assigned instead. The proposal was not necessary.

Gosudarstvennyĭ prirodnyĭ zapovednik "Prisurskiĭ" (Russia)

The proposal does not include any information in English that supports the choice of BT. In addition, the cataloger should consider the tag and the qualifier on the UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Islamic law—Codification

The subdivision –Codification is authorized for use under legal topics (see H 1154.5). Examples were added to H 1154.5 to make it clear that the subdivisions listed there can be used, as appropriate, under legal systems such as Islamic law. The proposal was not necessary.

Karisalov family

The citation from the work being cataloged contains no English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The most basic requirements for a family name heading are that the cataloger should provide, in English, the form of the name being chosen for the heading, the location of the family (preferably cited from the work being cataloged), and evidence that a standard reference source was consulted. SHM H 1631 sec. 3 provides further detailed instructions. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lipuun Point Reservation (Philippines)

This heading was not used in the bib record for the work being cataloged. Further, the heading does not appear to be necessary for the work. The proposal was not necessary.

Philippine wit and humor (Tagalog)

The cataloger should assign the established heading Tagalog wit and humor. The proposal was not necessary.

Stuart (Style)

None of the citations supports the idea that there is specialized meaning of “Stuart” relating only to clothing, dress, and fashion, which seems to be the intention of the proposal, based on the selection of broader terms.  Instead of this heading, it would be better to assign Men’s clothing—Scotland—History—[time period] and/or Fashion—Scotland—History—[time period]. The proposal was not approved.

Thermoplastic polyolefins

According to the Meeting’s research, all polyolefins are thermoplastic. The existing heading Polyolefins was edited to reflect this information. The proposal was not approved.

Wife selling

It is unclear from the information provided in the proposal that the work being cataloged is about the law of wife selling as is indicated by the choice of broader terms. If the work is about wife selling in general, the proposal should be resubmitted with a different broader term, perhaps Selling. If the work is about the law of wife selling, the proposal likewise should be resubmitted, and another proposal for Wife selling—Law and legislation should be submitted as well.
