CLASSIFICATION

BL2020.K392

Kabir was the founder of the religion. The religion is subarranged by Table BL6. The number proposed would put this work into the number for dictionaries and encyclopedias of the religion, which does not seem to fit. If the work is about the doctrines Kabir propounded, then BL2020.K39245 should be assigned. If it is a biography of Kabir, then BL202.K39292.A-Z should be used. The proposal was not approved.

BX1879

This hierarchy is for offices of the Roman Curia (established as Catholic Church. Curia Romana). However, the cataloger established the press office as Vatican City. Press Office. Vatican City is the jurisdiction. The Catholic Church and Vatican City are not the same thing. If the work is about Vatican City’s press office, the work should be classed in JN5697, with the public administration of Vatican City. If it is about the press office of the Roman Curia, then the name authority needs to be revised and the proposal may be resubmitted.

DR738.5.C45

DR738.5.A-Z is a list of city sections of Istanbul, but Çekme is not established as a city section of Istanbul. It is established as a ppl.  If it really is a city section, then the name authority needs to be revised and the proposal may be resubmitted. If it is a ppl, then the name authority is fine and the work should be classed in DR741.A-Z (no proposal necessary).

LB2844.1.C66

This A-Z list is a list of topics related to teaching personnel. The list is not specific to a country, but the concept is specific to South Korea. The work should be classed with works on contractual status of teaching personnel in South Korea, LB2835.28.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PN2899.45.B36

The only subject heading we have for Bangsawan is for the music (per the BT). The cataloger apparently needs to propose a heading for the dramatic form.  The meeting is unclear whether bangsawan should be proposed in the PN schedule (if so, PN2899.45.A-Z is probably the correct place) or in the music schedule. Presumably, the research the cataloger does for the subject proposal will clarify the situation. Further, the note in the bib record says that the work is composed of scripts. If the scripts are actually the lyrics of songs, then the work should be treated as a collection of poetry. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PR5810, PR5810.E00-.E99; PR5810.F00-.F99; PR5810.G00-.G99

These proposals match what was done in the shelflist. Rather than perpetuating this practice (and there are only 11 works in the catalog), the meeting prefers to cancel/parenthesize PR5810 and start over with PR5810.2. Its caption will be “Complete works. By date.” This would follow the pattern of all of other collections/selections numbers for Wilde (PR5811, PR5814, etc.). The proposals were not approved.

 SUBJECT HEADINGS

Archaeology and history

Many of the resources that have been assigned the existing heading Archaeology and history are not about historical archaeology.  Some are about the interaction between history and archaeology. Other resources are about archaeology as a type of history. Still others are about integrating history into archeological practices and vice versa.   It is clear that the UF Historical archaeology was meant to be an upward UF. The proposal was not approved.

Industrial archaeology

The meeting prefers not to create subhierarchies for types of archaeology. The proposal was not approved.

Plantation archaeology

The work being cataloged is about excavations on specific plantations, and is not about the practice of “plantation archaeology.” Therefore, the proposal was not necessary for the work being cataloged.

Art, Oceanian; Art, Pacific Island

There is a general see reference: Oceanian USE headings beginning with the words Pacific Island. There is already a heading Art, Pacific Island. The proposals were not approved.

Bible plays, French

Only the French title of the work cat was provided. Information in English should be provided that shows the relation of the work being cataloged to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bīnālūd, Mount (Iran)

Geonet was not cited, as it is required to be per SHM H 690. If the mountain is not listed in Geonet, there should be a 675. The proposal may be resubmitted..

Blood—Religious aspects—Nagualism

Nagualism is a specific belief common to various Mesoamerican religious traditions, not a religion. Instead of the proposed string, it would be better to postcoordinate Blood—Religious aspects (and/or Blood—Folklore) with the headings Nagualism and Witchcraft, perhaps along with [name of ethnic group]—Religion and/or [name of ethnic group]—Folklore. The proposal was not approved.

Brain—Religious aspects—Zen Buddhism

Zen Buddhism is not a religion, it is a branch of a religion. Brain—Religious aspects—Buddhism may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Cemali family

The information provided from the work cat did not include the identification of the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Children’s stories, Uzbek

The Summary of Decisions for List 1908 said, “The proposal includes some information in English, but that information does not support the choice of the language qualifier. The language of the text cannot be assumed from the language of the title.” That information is still lacking. The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Cité judiciaire (Paris, France)

The cataloger should provide information in English in support of the proposal, perhaps by translating some of the French in the 670s. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Columbus Motor Speedway (Columbus, Ohio)

Only the title was provided; the qualifier and BT were not supported. There are cities in many states named Columbus. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Creoles

The heading Creoles was first established in 1947, with a see also reference to Miscegenation. It clearly was meant to refer to people of mixed race.  This proposal provides several definitions of Creole, which do not clarify or re-define the meaning of the heading.

Further, the scope note could be interpreted to mean that the heading applies to everyone who lives in a country that was formerly a colony.

The cataloger included a note saying that the scope note was needed “to justify the heading for an Alaskan genealogy.” The heading Creoles—Alaska should be assigned. The proposal was not necessary.

Crist family

The information provided from the work cat did not include the identification of the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Erotic painting, Finnish

Nothing in the work cat citation states that this work is about Finnish erotic painting. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Falconry—Law and legislation

The proposal does not provide any information in English that states that the work is about laws on falconry. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Figurative art, Israeli

The work cat citation does not say that the prize is given for Israeli art. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fort de Brégançon (Bormes-les-Mimosas, France)

This fort was an active military installation through World War I and as such it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Fort de Loncin (Liège, Belgium)

This fort was an active military installation through World War I and as such, it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Gebauer family

The information provided from the work cat did not include the identification of the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Incredibles films

The cataloger provided only the title, “The Incredi-files.” More information should be provided to identify the topic of the work cat. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Investigations in literature

The information in the citation for the work being cataloged makes it sound as if it is about the author as investigator, not investigations as depicted in literature. The meeting cannot tell from the information online whether that is the case. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Jim Crow laws

First, there is no work cat citation, which is required for literary warrant. However, other considerations were taken into account.

1. There is no set body of Jim Crow laws. These laws were promulgated at various levels of jurisdiction, over almost 100 years. The proposed scope note indicates that the heading would be used for works about Jim Crow laws, but the meeting is concerned that the heading would be assigned to individual laws – which means that the determination would be based on the opinion or viewpoint of the cataloger.

2. Using this heading for laws promulgated during a particular time period, and another heading for racist/segregationist laws of all other time periods, would be a disservice to the user. It would be better to continue with the existing practice for materials about segregationist laws, which is to assign African Americans—Legal status, laws, etc.; Segregation—Law and legislation; and African Americans—Segregation—History—[chronological subdivision].

3. The heading would be used if the title said Jim Crow, and likely not elsewhere; a basic principle of LCSH is to avoid cataloging by title.  In addition, if the phrase is in the title or table of contents, it is keyword accessible.

4. Some of the laws being promulgated today have been referred to as modern-day Jim Crow laws.  The heading would likely be used for works about current laws, again based on the title of the work, when that is not the intent of the heading.

Overall, it would be better to assign all works about segregationist laws the same headings, regardless of the time period. The proposal was not approved.

Jim Crow (Race relations)

There is a UF Jim Crowism, which leads to two headings, African Americans—Segregation and Blacks—Segregation. It would not be a good idea to have a separate heading for segregation of blacks and African Americans during a particular time period. The chronological focus can be brought out in other ways. The meeting is also concerned that the heading would be assigned only if the phrase Jim Crow is used in the title, which would separate those works from all other works about segregation in that period but that do not have the phrase in the title.

Additionally, there are references to “Jim Crow” happening today, which would not be the intent of the heading. Catalogers are likely to catalog by title and thereby separate like materials instead of collocating them. The proposal was not approved.

African Americans—Segregation; Blacks—Segregation

In accordance with the above decision (Jim Crow (Race relations)) these proposals were not approved.

Jurie family

This proposal was submitted apparently to provide a continuous history of the family name in LCSH, however, a heading for the Jurie family was not needed for the work being cataloged. The proposal was not necessary.

Schor family

This proposal was made to provide a related term link to Jurie family. However, the proposal for Jurie family was not necessary; therefore, this proposal was not necessary.

Kashmiri newspapers

The work being cataloged appears to be a newspaper; LC does not assign subject headings to general newspapers. The proposed heading would be used only for works about Kashmiri newspapers, per the scope note on Newspapers. The proposal was not necessary.

Mouchet Mountain (France)

The proposal cites a library catalog as the work being cataloged. The actual resource being cataloged should be cited instead. The proposal may be resubmitted.

National Airlines Flight 496 Hijacking Incident, 1972

The meeting could not find any evidence of a conventional name, and there was none any provided. The cataloger needs to find that evidence or assign Hijacking of aircraft along with the heading for the airline. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nonfiction novel, Lithuanian

The cataloger did not provide any information in English as required by SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6). The proposal may be resubmitted.

North Santiam Canyon (Or.)

According to the 675, the cataloger could not find this feature in any geographic reference sources. The meeting found a local tourism website that puts canyon in quotation marks. Combining that with the fact that it contains several towns/villages that are along a river, makes it appear that the “canyon” is actually the valley of the North Santiam River. More research should be done to determine whether this is the case. If so, the river will have to be proposed, along with the canyon heading (which should have a UF for the valley). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Peacekeeping forces, Pakistani

The 670 provided does not provide information in support of the qualifier. It mentions UN peacekeeping forces, but says nothing about Pakistan. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sex—Comic books, strips, etc.

Not all comic books that feature sex are erotic or pornographic. This cancellation in favor of Pornographic comic books, strips, etc. and Erotic comic books, strips, etc. was not approved.

Razumovskiĭ family

The second UF being added is not supported in the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ruederche River Valley (Switzerland)

The river needs to be proposed at the same time as the valley of that river (SHM H 800 sec 8). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sarangani Bay Area (Philippines)

Usage in one work does not indicate that an area is “well known by alternative name forms” (H 760 1.e). Even the work itself calls the area by multiple names. The work should be assigned the heading Sarangai Bay Region (Philippines), which is a free-floating construction. The proposal was not approved.

Satirical plays, German

The BT should remain German drama, because not all satire is comedic. The proposal was not approved.

Satirical plays, Tagalog

The BT should remain Tagalog drama, because not all satire is comedic. The proposal was not approved.

Shishanzi Site (China)

The cataloger did not provide any information in English as required by SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Shofet (The Hebrew word)

The only English in the citation was “The term ‘judge.’” That is insufficient to justify the qualifier and BT. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Shoter (The Hebrew word)

The only English in the citation was “The term ‘officer.’” That is insufficient to justify the qualifier and BT. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sonnets, Urdu

The cataloger did not provide any information in English as required by SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Széchényi family

The information provided from the work cat did not include the identification of the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Three-dimensional printing

Additive manufacturing has more elements than 3-D printing. The Summary of Decisions for List 1806 said, “This proposal was made to add the UF Additive manufacturing to the existing heading [Three-dimensional printing]. … the website of the Loughborough University Additive Manufacturing Research Group, citing the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard, says that there are seven categories of additive manufacturing, and that additive manufacturing is not a synonym for 3D printing. The proposal was not approved.” The meeting would support receiving a separate proposal for Additive manufacturaing, which could be added as a BT on Three-dimensional printing and headings for other categories of additive manufacturing. The proposal was not approved.

Vyala (Mythical animal)

Mythical animals should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Vyala (Mythical animal) in art

After it is established in the name authority file, the name heading may be subdivided by –Art. The proposal was not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Medical comics

On List1809, a proposal for Graphic medicine (Comics) was submitted. The Summary stated,

Medicine is the topic; the genre/form is graphic novels. In addition, there are not yet any narrower terms of this type under Graphic novels, and the meeting does not wish to set that precedent. The subject heading for the topic should be postcoordinated with the genre/form term Graphic novels. The proposal was not approved.

The meeting discussed the proposal and decided to approve Medical comics but remove the nonfiction UFs and 670s.  Two related proposals appeared on List 1905: Pathographies and Graphic pathographies. The Summary stated,

Pathographies would be used for works that are biographies of people with medical problems and disabilities. The genre/form term Biographies and subject headings appropriate to the subject matter should be assigned instead.

Likewise, graphic pathographies should be handled by assigning the genre/form term Biographical comics and subject headings appropriate to the subject matter.

The proposals were not approved.

The current proposal seeks to add the UF Graphic medicine (Comics), which was removed on 1901, back into the record, and also to make a UF for Graphic pathographies.   The meeting intentionally removed the former, and gave instructions on how to catalog “graphic pathographies” on 1905.

The proposal was not approved.
