CLASSIFICATION

BS1199.E92

In accordance with the decision on the related subject proposal, Exile (Punishment) in the Old Testament, this proposal was not approved. See the discussion of the subject proposal below. The work should be classed in BS1199.B3.

DG55.L59

This proposal was made to add a cutter for the Locri Region to the list of regions, provinces, etc., in the hierarchy for the history of ancient Italy. Locri is a city, not a region or province. CSM F 550 sec. 1 says, “When applying numbers in areas of the classification that are locally subarranged down to the level of cities, classify a work that covers a city region or metropolitan area in the same number or Cutter that is used for the city itself.” The work should be classed in DG70.A-Z, the alphabetical list of cities in ancient Italy. The proposal was not approved.

GR355.52.Z56

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Zime (African people) for details.

N3750.S54

The Asian Civilizations Museum is an ethnological museum, not an art museum. The work being cataloged should be classified in GN36.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PG7038.H65

The classification proposal is for holiness as a special topic in Polish literature before 1800. The subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged indicate that the work is about holiness in Polish religious literature, not limited to a particular time period; that topic would be classed in PG7023.A-Z. If the work is indeed about early Polish literature, the subject headings should be revised to reflect that fact. If it is about Polish literature of all time periods, the existing number PG7023.R4 (religion) may be assigned or a proposal may be made for holiness in PG7023.A-Z. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PL210.P63

The number being proposed would represent the depiction of polemics in Turkish literature. The meeting is unable to determine from the information available whether that is the topic of the work being cataloged, or if it is about polemics as a literary form. If the latter, a proposal should be made in the hierarchy for the history of “other forms” of Turkish literature, PL224-227. The proposal may be resubmitted with information about the focus of the work.

PM8238.G4

CSM F 350 sec. 2 states that names of languages do not need to be established when a topic is subarranged by language. This proposal for Esperanto-German dictionaries was not necessary.

Z8640.2

Personal names must be established in the name authority file before they may be used as classification captions. The proposal may be resubmitted.

 SUBJECT HEADINGS

Air bases, Canadian

This heading would be used for Canadian air bases outside Canada, while the work being cataloged is about an air base in Ontario, Canada. The work should be assigned the heading for the base, and may also be assigned the heading Air bases with geographic subdivision if desired. The proposal was not necessary.

Badjid family

This proposal was marked resubmit on Tentative List 1905, and it does not appear to have been edited before it was resubmitted. The Summary of Decisions for List 1905 stated, “The proposal contained no information from the work cat regarding the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. This information is required because, among other factors, without location information it would be impossible to determine if a family name changed as a result of immigration.” The proposal may be resubmitted again, after the required revisions have been made.

Biķernieki Forest Massacres, Rīga, Latvia, 1941-1944

The “Work cat” citation provided was to a library catalog, which is insufficient. The citation should refer to the bibliographic work that was cataloged, and include a description of the event as provided in that work. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Castell de Cervià de Ter Site (Spain)

This proposal was marked resubmit on Tentative List 1903, and it does not appear to have been edited before it was resubmitted. The Summary of Decisions for List 1903 stated, “All of the citations seem to indicate that the heading that was needed was a heading for the castle, not for an archaeological site. If a heading for the site is actually needed, the cataloger should edit the authority record to make that clear. If a heading for the castle is needed, the cataloger should revise the heading, BT, and MARC coding.” The proposal may be resubmitted again, after the required revisions have been made.

China—Climate; China—Climate—Religious aspects; China—Climate—Religious aspects—Taoism; Islamic countries—Climate; Islamic countries—Climate—Religious aspects

It seems unlikely that Taoism, for example, has different religious teachings or beliefs about the climate of China than it does about the climate of other places. Similarly, it seems dubious that religious views about the climates of Islamic countries are different from religious views of the climates of other regions.

Furthermore, the meeting prefers to be conservative when establishing new free-floating subdivisions, particularly if they formerly would have been further subdivided by “multiple” subdivisions. The meeting approved the proposal for Climate—Religious aspects that appeared on this list. That heading, or possibly Weather—Religious aspects, should be assigned to the works being cataloged, along with headings of the type [place]—Climate.

The proposals were not approved.

Exile (Punishment) in the Old Testament

The work being cataloged is a collection of conference proceedings. Although the meeting was not able to access the table of contents for the work, it was able to view the conference program online. The conference appears to have been about the books of the prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah, who all wrote about and/or during, the Babylonian Exile. The base heading for this proposal, Exile (Punishment), is in the hierarchy Criminal justice, Administration of; it is not appropriate for a work about the Babylonian Exile.

The work should be cataloged with the headings Jews—History—Babylonian captivity, 598-515 B.C.—Congresses and Bible. Old Testament—Criticism, interpretation, etc.—Congresses.

The proposal was not approved.

Ice crossings; Ice roads

These proposals were made to remove the UF Ice roads from the heading Ice crossings and establish it as a separate heading. The proposals should have provided authoritative definitions that show that ice roads and ice crossings are different concepts, but did not. The proposals may be resubmitted.

India—Kings and rulers—Religious aspects; India—Kings and rulers—Religious aspects—Hinduism

The subdivision –Kings and rulers–Religious aspects free-floats under names of places, but has never been further subdivided by a multiple representing a religion or Christian denomination. The meeting does not wish to begin subdividing [place]—Kings and rulers—Religious aspects by religion or denomination.

Instead, two headings should be assigned: [place]—Kings and rulers—Religious aspects and Kings and rulers—Religious aspects—[religion or Christian denomination]. That is, the work being cataloged should be assigned India—Kings and rulers—Religious aspects and Kings and rulers—Religious aspects—Hinduism.

The proposals were not approved.

Neighborhoods—Religious aspects; Neighborhoods—Religious aspects—Christianity

The work being cataloged does not appear to be about neighborhoods as physical places, but about neighborliness or the concept of community. Neighborliness—Religious aspects—Christianity and/or Communities—Religious aspects—Christianity should be assigned instead. The proposals were not necessary.

Nonsense literature, French

The citation for the work being cataloged would support the assignment of the heading Theater of the absurd, not the heading that was proposed. The citation should explicitly state how the work is, or is about, French nonsense literature. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Phoenician antiquities

This proposal was made to add the UF Phoenicia—Antiquities to the existing heading. Phoenician antiquities are found far beyond the boundaries of the ancient Phoenician empire. The proposal was not approved.

Political prisoners’ writings, Korean

The work being cataloged is a collection of works written by a political prisoner. H 1775 sec. 3.b states that for collections of literature by a single author, nationality is expressed only if it is combined with a genre or theme in a phrase heading; the class of persons of the author is not expressed at all. The proposal was not necessary.

Polyfunctions

The meeting is unable to determine the difference between polyfunctions and polynomial functions and requests that the proposal be modified to include an authoritative resource that describes the difference. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Quilters of Gee’s Bend

The proposed heading appears to be merely an appellation that describes quilters who live in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The work being cataloged should be assigned the headings African American quiltmakers—[place] and/or Quilting—[place]. The proposal was not approved.

Sungur family

The citation for the work being cataloged did not contain information about the location of the family, as required by H 1631 sec. 3. Among other reasons, this information is required because without location information it is impossible to determine if a family name changed as a result of immigration. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Venezuelan property

The only information provided in support of this proposal was the title of the work being cataloged, “Blocking property of the government of Venezuela.” The title is insufficient because it is unclear which property is being blocked, and where (the heading would refer to Venezuelan property outside Venezuela). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Zime (African people)

Except for the citation to the work being cataloged, the citations in the proposal indicate that there is not an ethnic group called Zime. Instead, the citations say that there are several ethnic groups with distinctive names and each may have an alternate name Zime; the groups all speak different languages. The work being cataloged is the only source cited that conflates the groups. The meeting prefers not to establish a heading for an ethnic group based on the work of a single author when that author’s work conflicts with all of the other sources. Furthermore, at least one of ethnic groups has already been separately established in LCSH, and so have some of the languages.

One approach to cataloging the work would be to assign more general headings, such as Ethnology—[place]. Alternately, the work could be closely reexamined to determine whether it is actually about one of the specific groups that has the alternate name Zime. The proposal may be resubmitted.
