CLASSIFICATION

BL1239.82.U43

This number was proposed along with a proposal for the subject heading Umālai Harāuba (Hindu festival). The subject will be approved as Lai Haraoba (Festival) on this list. In accordance with that decision, the work should be classed in GN471, or, a number for Meitheis may be proposed in BL2370.A-Z. The proposal for BL1239.82.U43 was not approved.

DK4306.4

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Mątwy, Battle of, Mątwy, Inowrocław, Poland, 1666 for details.

GV584.7.A-Z

The work being cataloged is about the New York Athletic Club. Individual athletic clubs should be classified with the city in which they are located. In this case, the work should be classed in GV584.5.N4. The proposal was not approved.

N3477

The Museo del Greco is named for the painter El Greco and is primarily devoted to a collection of his works and of materials related to him. The work being cataloged should be classed with El Greco at ND813.T4. The proposal was not approved.

PH3053.P45

Philosophy of literature is different from philosophy in literature. From the headings assigned, the work being cataloged is the former; the class number would be for the latter. Works similar to the work cat are classed in PH3042. The proposal was not approved.

Z42.3.P35

The work being cataloged is about autographs of painters. There is an existing number in the schedule, Z42.3.A7, for artists. The meeting felt that it would be better to group types of artists together in .A7 rather than establishing separate numbers for them. Therefore, a note was added to Z42.3.A7, “Including painters, sculptors, etc.” The proposal was not approved.

J9 11.5

Only one of the tables for political institutions and public administration, Table J8, mentions the chief executive, and Table J8 provides only a reference to the general works number for the executive branch. The meeting chose to use Table J8 as a precedent for Table J9; therefore, a reference was added: Chief executive see J9 11. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Arroio Moreira Fazenda (Brazil)

The summary for 1904 said, “Only the Portuguese-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal should contain information in English that supports the geographic qualifier and BT.” The cataloger provided information, but did not take appropriate actions with it.  First, there are two later names in the 670, and the heading should reflect the latest name and UFs should be provided from the others. Also, the 670 says “part of the urbanization of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.”  Does this mean that it is in Pelotas or not? If it is, the qualifier should be changed to reflect that fact. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bangladesh—Politics and government—1971-1991

The date range on the existing heading (1971-  ) was purposely left open when Bangladesh—Politics and government—1991- was established in order to have a single heading that covers the entire period that Bangladesh has been independent. Ordinarily, catalogers should consider closing date ranges when new ranges are opened. In this case, the open date range represents a significant period, which remains relevant for new materials. The proposal to close the date range was not approved.

Björkön (Finland)

Geonet was cited, but incompletely. There are numerous islands named Björkö in Finland, and the meeting cannot determine which one the work is about. The citation for the work being cataloged should provide location information if the work contains it, and the cataloger should determine which Björkö listed in Geonet is the correct one. The qualifier on the heading and UFs should be revised per H 810. In addition, the cataloger should revise the punctuation in the 670s to match the standardized format (see H 203). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Diamond (Richmond, Va.)

The cataloger should provide information from the work cat whenever possible. Only the title, The Diamond, was provided. Surely, the work being cataloged contains information about the history of the ballpark. A citation from Wikipedia is neither sufficient, nor is it considered authoritative. SHM H 202 states in part: “Crowdsourced web sites and services such as Wikipedia, DBpedia, eHow, Twitter, etc., are not generally considered to be authoritative when proposing subject headings.” The proposal may be resubmitted.

General Strike, Spain, 1988

Information from the work being cataloged should be provided in English explaining the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. A single citation to Wikipedia is not sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Gran Circo Norte-Americano Fire, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1961

The cataloger provided no evidence of a conventional proper name for this event. Regardless, fires in particular buildings, or in properties owned by individual corporate bodies, should be assigned the heading for the building or corporate body subdivided by –Fire, [date], per H 1592 sec. 5.b. and H 1105. The circus is already established in the NAF. The proposal was not necessary.

Jassy-Kishinev Operation, 1944

The existing heading Jassy, Battle of, Romania, 1944, should be assigned to the work, as indicated by the UF Jassy-Kishinev, Battle of, Romania, 1944 on that heading. The proposal was not approved.

Kilauea Point Light Station (Hawaii)

This proposal to change the heading to Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse (Hawaii), provided no evidence that that is its name. The citation provided says only that the lighthouse is dedicated to Inouye. Also, when a heading is being changed, the cataloger should provide a former heading reference, per H 193. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ludwigshafen Explosion, Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany, 1948

No evidence of a conventional name was provided. Regardless, explosions should be assigned the heading for the building or corporate body subdivided by –Explosion, [date].  The explosion happened at the BASF plant in Ludwigshafen. BASF is established in the NAF as BASF Aktiengesellschaft. The proposal was not necessary.

Mątwy, Battle of, Mątwy, Inowrocław, Poland, 1666

A place name must be established before it can be used as a qualifier.  Mątwy is not in the NAF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Oppau Explosion, Oppau, Germany, 1921

No evidence of a conventional name was provided, and this was an explosion of the BASF plant in Oppau. The heading assigned should be: BASF Aktiengesellschaft—Explosion, 1921. The proposal was not necessary.

Peacekeeping forces, Ukrainian

The summary of 1903 requested that information about the contents of the work should be provided in English. The cataloger did not do so. Instead, a general statement from the UN website was provided, stating that Ukraine participates in peacekeeping activities. Is the book about Ukraine’s peacekeeping activities? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sáenz-Samaniego-Febre family

No information from the work being cataloged was provided supporting the compound form of the family name that was chosen as the heading. The form of the name chosen for the heading must be supported in the citation.

Additionally, the work cat treats Saenz Samaniego as one family name and Febre as the second, so, the second hyphen should be deleted. Also, an RT should be added to this proposal for the existing heading for Saenz family.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Allegorical films

The description of a film as allegorical is largely based on the point of view (and purpose) of the viewer.  “Allegorical” films do not share conventions, purpose, structure, themes, plots, or character types. Therefore, Allegorical films does not constitute a genre nor a form.

To provide catalogers the option of categorizing a film as allegorical, Allegories has been removed from the literature hierarchy and entered under Instructional and educational works instead.  As a result, Allegories could be assigned along with appropriate terms from the Motion pictures hierarchy.

The proposal was not approved.

Cozy mysteries

The cataloger should cite research that provides a definition/description of the term that would also justify the scope note. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Theatrical fiction

This proposal does not include a definition or description from an authoritative reference source. If one can be found, the proposal may be resubmitted.
