PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

JZ1443

Based on the subject cataloging, the book is about the history of the International Friendship Museum.  The cataloger did not assign a heading for diplomatic gifts.  It is possible that the work focuses on diplomatic gifts in the collections of the museum, but that was not clear. If the work is about the museum – and assuming that the museum is about the history of international relations in general – then it can class in JZ1405.  If it is about the museum, and the museum is about the relations between specific countries, then it should be classed according to the provisions of CSM F 592.  If it is really about diplomatic gifts, then the subject analysis should be revised and the proposal may be resubmitted.

PS3523.A7269

The work being cataloged is juvenile fiction and should be classed in PZ7. The proposal was not necessary.

QC454.C37

This proposal is based upon the same work as the proposal for  QC454.A27, and it was proposed specifically for a broader term of the subject heading used in the bib record, but neither the subject heading it was proposed for nor the class number QC454.C37 were used in the bib record. The proposal was not necessary.

QC454.O65

This proposal is based upon the same work as the proposal for QC454.A27, and it was proposed specifically for a broader term of the subject heading used in the bib record, but neither the subject heading it was proposed for nor the class number QC454.O65 were used in the bib record. The proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1180, Plants and crops
$x Heavy metal content (May Subd Geog)
                                    $x Seedlings $x Growth

Other decisions:

Antepowicz family

The information entered in the 952 field should be in the work cat 670 because it came from the work being cataloged. Also, the location of the family should be clearly indicated. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Argenson family

The cataloger proposed the UF Voyer d’Argenson because evidence from the name authority file suggests that it might be a variant. The Dictionary of American Family Names gives Voyer as an occupational name for a legal official; therefore, it would not be considered a variant of Argenson. If both family names are needed for the cataloging, two proposals should be submitted, one for Argenson family and another for Voyer d’Argenson family, and those two proposals should be linked as RTs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Astrology and fertility

A compound heading of this nature should represent a reciprocal relationship between the concepts (see SHM H 310 sec. 1). In this instance, the work being described by the heading would have to be about the effect of astrology on fertility and about the effect of fertility on astrology. However, the work being cataloged appears to be about the ways astrology can be used to describe and/or predict fertility, not about the reciprocal. Separate headings for astrology and fertility may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Bangladesh—Politics and government—1991-

This proposal should have been accompanied by a proposal to close off Bangladesh—Politics and government—1971- .  Additionally, there are 1,114 bib records that will have to be examined to determine whether the works discuss 1971-1991, 1991-, or both. Since the majority of the works were published after 1991, the publication date cannot be used as the determining factor. The cataloger should identify the bib records that need to be changed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bet Natif Site (Israel)

According to the citations in the proposal, Bet Natif is an ancient village that has been continuously occupied since modern times; it is not the name of an archaeological site.  The village should be established in the NAF, per the instructions in H 715. The proposal was not approved.

Castell de Cervià de Ter Site (Spain)

All of the citations seem to indicate that the heading that was needed was a heading for the castle, not for an archaeological site. If a heading for the site is actually needed, the cataloger should edit the authority record to make that clear. If a heading for the castle is needed, the cataloger should revise the heading, BT, and MARC coding. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cholera in literature

Information in English should be provided that shows the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Đà Diễn Estuary (Vietnam)

According to information found online, Đà Diễn Estuary is the estuary of the Ba River (aka Sông Đà Rằng). Headings for estuaries do not have to be based on the headings for the associated rivers. However, in this case, the heading for the river, followed by the word estuary, needs to be a UF on the heading for the estuary.  In addition to the proposal for the estuary, a proposal should be submitted to establish a heading for the river. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Damsgård Hovedgård (Bergen, Norway)

The citation from the work being cataloged does not identify the location of this building; therefore, the qualifier in the proposed heading is not supported. Further, the cataloger should consider whether this is a “dwelling with extensive grounds” and falls into H 1572; the citation refers to “historic gardens” but does not indicate whether those gardens are extensive. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Data sets

In a linked open data environment, free-floating subdivisions are especially problematic; therefore, the meeting does not wish to authorize “Data sets” as a new free-floating form subdivision. The new genre/form term Data sets, which is approved on this list, may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Downstate New York (N.Y.)

Downstate New York apparently is a named region, but the cataloger did not provide enough authoritative information about its extent. The definition provided from the work being cataloged and a definition from a news article agree fairly closely, and they are comparable to New York Department of Transportation’s definition as reported by Wikipedia. Research done by the meeting indicated that other definitions of the region varied. The cataloger should provide more research, from New York State websites and elsewhere, that better establishes the extent of the region. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ferhat Paşa Türbesi (Istanbul, Turkey); Faridun Paşa Türbesi (Istanbul, Turkey); Siyavuş Paşa Türbesi (Istanbul, Turkey)

The meeting’s assumption was that the names in these proposals, Ferhat Paşa, Faridun Paşa, and Siyavuş Paşa, were the names of people in forename-surname order. Therefore, each needs to have a UF Paşa Türbesi (Istanbul, Turkey) – which needs to be further qualified. However, there is already a heading Paşa Türbesi (Turkey). The record for the established heading is skeletal, so it is unclear if it represents one of the mausoleums that is being proposed, or, if not, whether the existing heading can/should be qualified to disambiguate it. The cataloger should do some research to determine what the existing heading refers to and update the authority record with disambiguating information. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Göltzschtalbrücke (Mylau, Germany, and Netzschkau, Saxony, Germany)

Bridges that have a terminus in two cities and are known in relation to both cities equally should be qualified by the names of the cities in alphabetical order (H 1334), as was done on this proposal. However, the citations provided in the proposal do not identify the cities. Also, the cataloger should consider whether Viaducts—Germany would be a better BT than Bridges—Germany. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hypertext literature, German

No English was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Laws of science

The only statement from the work being cataloged is a cataloger’s translation of the title, “Scientific laws.”Works about the laws of science have been cataloged in the past using the heading Physical laws, which should be assigned to this work. Contrasting scope notes were added to the headings Natural law and Physical laws to explain the difference between the headings. Also, UFs were added to Physical laws to incorporate the concept of scientific laws or laws of science. The proposal was not approved.

Mexican American political activists

The only information provided in the proposal was the title of the work being cataloged, “Chicano communists and the struggle for social justice.” Chicano is not the same thing as Mexican American, and communists are not the same as political activists. Additional description of the content of the work should be provided to show the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

National characteristics, Chuvash, in literature

The proposed heading is a derivative of the basic concept; therefore, the base heading, National characteristics, Chuvash, should also be proposed. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Peacekeeping forces, Ukrainian

No English was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Polynesia—Literatures; Polynesian literature (to add BT)

A proposal for a subject heading should be submitted because of a need to use the heading for current cataloging, but there is no citation in these proposals to a work being cataloged. The proposal Polynesia—Literatures introduces an unnecessary level of hierarchy. H 1828 states that a heading of the type [place]—Literatures is used when one language predominates, but that there is more than one language of literature in that place. Polynesia is one of the more linguistically diverse areas of the world in which no single language predominates, so the proposed heading is not appropriate. The proposals were not approved.

Porque (The Spanish word)

No English was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Reportage literature, Israeli

The proposal did not provide any information English, but a cataloger who is fluent in Hebrew commented that the work should be treated as a biography of an Israeli journalist and/or a collection of his journalistic works. The work is not Israeli reportage literature, which would be a collection of belles lettristic literature in a “narrative style of literature that features the personal presence and involvement of a human witness” (see the scope note on Reportage literature). The proposal was not necessary.

Robotic operating systems (Computers)

According to the ROS.org web site (cited on the proposal), the Robot Operating System is a “flexible framework for writing robot software.” It appears to be a single product suite rather than a type of software. SHM H 2070 specifies that software frameworks such as this one should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Yom ha-zikaron (Israel)

The addition of the qualifier (Israel) on the heading for this national holiday does nothing to disambiguate the two meanings of Yom ha-zikaron. The meeting will add a qualifier on the UF in the heading Rosh ha-Shanah. The proposal was not approved.

Seedlings, Container—Growth; Seedlings, Container—Winter protection; Trees—Seedlings, Container—Growth; Trees—Seedlings, Container—Winter protection

The proposed heading strings represent the use of the subdivisions –Growth and –Winter protection under the existing subdivision –Seedlings, Container. There is no precedent for the use of further subdivision under –Seedlings, Container. Due to the difficulties that free-floating subdivisions pose in linked open data environments, the meeting chose to continue the current practice of not further subdividing –Seedlings, Container. Headings such as Corn—Seedlings, Container; Corn—Seedlings—Growth; Plants—Winter protection; and Trees—Seedlings, Container; etc., may be postcoordinated. The proposals were not approved.

Shuneĭko family

The 670 citation to the work being cataloged, which is in Russian, states that the work is about a Belarusian family named Shuneĭko, and the citation gives the name Szuneyko family as a variant that is Polish in origin. If the spelling of the name was changed because of emigration, then two separate headings, connected by RTs, should be established if both names are needed for cataloging. The proposal may be resubmitted with information about whether the UF is a local variant or if it is a change due to emigration.

Tharuhat (Nepal)

Tharuhat is not a recognized area or a specific region of Nepal. It is the ancestral homeland of the Tharu people. One of the citations in the proposal states that Tharuhat is a province, which would normally be established in the name authority file. However, there is no recognized province in Nepal with that name. The government of Nepal has not decided on the names of the new provinces discussed in its 2015 constitution. Therefore, there are no entries for these new provinces in the GEOnet Names Server, the main source of foreign geographic names. LC is aware of this situation and will create name authority records for the new provinces once there are BGN approved names.

The proposal for Tharuhat (Nepal) was not approved.

Timorese; Atoni (Indonesian and Timorese people); Atoni (Indonesian and Timorese people)--Marriage customs and rites; Baikeno language; Timor language; Uab Meto language (Indonesia); Uab Meto languages

None of these proposals has a citation to a work being cataloged. The cataloger should provide evidence of a work being cataloged instead of making changes for change’s sake. The proposals may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Chamber concertos

Chamber concertos is a medium of performance, not a genre or a form. (The same reasoning was used to not approve the proposal for Chamber symphonies on list 1901.) The proposal was not approved.

Dumky

The information provided indicates that dumky are folk music, yet Folk music was not included as a BT. The cataloger should provide more information if there was a reason that Folk music was not included as a BT. Also, Grove Art gave variant spellings, dumka and dumky, which should be added to the Grove Art citation and Dumka should be added as a UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sarabands (Music)

Both Sarabands and Sarabandes are acceptable spellings, per Merriam-Webster.  Sarabandes (the current term) is used by both Harvard and Grove. This was a change for change’s sake. The proposal was not approved.

Theater of cruelty

Theater of cruelty appears to be a very specific style, not a genre or form, and styles (e.g., avant-garde films) were intentionally excluded from LCGFT. The term Experimental films should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Twelve-tone music

Twelve-tone music is simply a technique of composition. The scale (major, whole tone, octatonic, etc.) or pitch material (atonal, 12-tone) is not considered to be a genre or form. The proposal was not approved.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
