GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Linear name changes for the Republic of Macedonia and Swaziland

PSD is currently working on projects to update all of the authority records that need to be revised to reflect the new country names North Macedonia (formerly the Republic of Macedonia) and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).

Some of the revisions to LCSH and LCC will appear on upcoming tentative lists, while others will be done offlist.

Each country underwent a linear name change, so the descriptive access points Macedonia (Republic) and Swaziland are no longer valid for subject use.  Instead, North Macedonia and Eswatini, respectively, should be assigned as subject headings and geographic subdivisions.  See H 708 for more information.

The CSM and SHM will be updated as necessary.  In particular, G 300, the Regions and Countries Table, will be revised to include new cutters for the two countries. The cutter for Eswatini is E77 and North Macedonia’s, N74.

PSD appreciates your patience as we make the necessary revisions.

CLASSIFICATION

BL2236.P64

The work being cataloged appears to be about the influence of religion on politics in Korea. According to CSM F 10 sec. 7, works about the influence of one subject on another are classified with the subject being influenced unless instructions or past practice dictate otherwise. The work should be classified with Korean politics, and the meeting suggests either JA84.A-Z (the history of political science by region or country, A-Z) or JQ1723.5.A-Z (special topics in the political institutions and public administration of Korea).  For the latter, a proposal for the topic in Table J11 would need to be submitted.  The proposal for PL2236.P64 was not necessary.

DG55.P37

This proposal was made to add a cutter for a national park to the list of regions in ancient Italy.  The meeting does not wish to begin adding modern parks to the list. Instead, the work should be classified with the region in which the park lies. The proposal was not approved.

DT433.245.S17; DT433.545.S23

Only the number actually needed for the work being cataloged should be proposed, not numbers for the multiple places in which the topic can be classified.  One of these classification proposals may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Saamia (African people) for details.

E99.S7; PM919; PM2030; PM2381.S6-.S695; PM2509

These proposals were withdrawn because they are related to subject proposals that were also withdrawn.  See the announcement titled Consulting with PSD before undertaking self-assigned projects, below, for details.

[HQ1170-1170.3]; HQ1170; HQ1170.3

These proposals were made to create a hierarchy for individual Muslim sects under the caption Muslim. The meeting does not wish to create hierarchy in this list of women from particular cultures, races, ethnic, and minority groups. Instead, a reference has been added to HQ1170. The proposals were not approved.

LD271.A83

A corporate body must be established in the name authority file before it can be proposed as a caption in the classification schedules. Averett University is not established. Further, the institutional history note in the proposal appears to be inaccurate, based on the information in the authority record for Averett College. The proposal may be resubmitted after the name authority work has been completed.

P79

The work being cataloged is a collection of research papers about various aspects of linguistics. The number proposed would be used for works on how to do research in the discipline of philology. The work should be classified in P121+.  The proposal was not necessary.

The meeting also notes that the subject heading assigned to the work, Linguistics—Research—History—21st century—Congresses, is inappropriate because the subdivision –Research should be used only for works on how to do research, not for the results of the research. See SHM H 2020 sec. 2 for more information on the use of the subdivision.

PK6450.9.M37

The number being proposed is for a named collection of fables in New Persian, which should be classified in PN989.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PL248.E694

LC treated the 1984 edition of the work being cataloged, which was written by Mehmet Emin Erişirgil, as a biography of Ziya Gökalp. It was classified in Gökalp’s literary author number, PL248.G6. Based on other works in LC’s catalog, Erişirgil appears to be a historian and philosopher, not a literary author. The proposal was not approved.

PN1995.9.K65

The work being cataloged is about documentaries about North Korea.  A work about documentaries on a particular topic are classed with the topic if the work focuses on the subject matter of the documentaries. If the work being cataloged is about the process of making documentaries (that is, if the topic of the documentaries is secondary), then it should be classified in PN1995.9.D6. The proposal was not approved.

PQ307.V65

The work being cataloged is about voice in French literature in the sense of the style or point of view of the literature. The number that was proposed is based on the subject heading Voice in literature, which refers to the portrayal of the human voice in literature and is therefore incorrect for the work.

It is clear from an examination of LC’s catalog that there is confusion about the meaning of the heading Voice in literature.  Therefore, a proposal to add a scope note to Voice in literature will appear on an upcoming list. The proposed scope note reads, “Here are entered works on the depiction of the human voice in literature. Works on voice as literary style or literary point of view are entered under headings such as Point of view (Literature); Literary style; and Narration (Rhetoric).”

The meeting requests that the work that prompted this proposal be reexamined in light of the above information, and that the subject headings and classification number be revised.  A proposal for an appropriate classification number may be resubmitted if necessary.

PT8452.F46

The subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged indicate that the work is about feminism in Norwegian literature in general, while the classification proposal indicates that the work is about feminism in 20th century Norwegian literature. The classification number should reflect the subject headings assigned. The cataloging should be reevaluated and either the headings or class number should be revised. The proposal may be resubmitted.

TK5105.8885.N54

The software for which this number is being proposed has not been established in the name authority file. The proposal may be resubmitted after the name authority work has been completed.

Table G3504 .S7

The cutter .C4 was proposed for Spruce Grove, and was changed during the editorial process to .S7. Spruce Grove was already established at .S7, so the proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement:

Consulting with PSD before undertaking self-assigned projects

LC catalogers or catalogers in SACO institutions may on occasion wish to undertake projects to “clean up” or enhance LCSH in areas of particular interest to them. Catalogers are strongly urged to consult with subject policy specialists before beginning such a project. The consultation can reveal whether the proposals are likely to be approved, define the scope for the project, ensure that the proposals appear together on the same list if necessary, and provide context for the policy specialists as they review the proposals, among other beneficial outcomes. In short, consultation will save everyone time.

The consultation does not have to be formal. An email to a subject policy specialist that briefly describes the intent, scope, and plan of the project would be sufficient. The policy specialists will follow up if they have questions. (Subject policy specialists’ contact information is provided in the headers of the tentative lists.)

This tentative list included 16 proposals to revise the hierarchies and headings for some of the ethnic groups and languages of the Pacific Northwest. No one in the Coop Section or PSD knew that this was a project, so the proposals were scattered throughout the list. This makes it very difficult to determine the cataloger’s intent and causes review of the proposals to be more difficult and time-consuming than necessary. More significantly, though, the decisions about several of the proposals that are on this tentative list are dependent upon the decisions for proposals that appear on Tentative List 1903.  Therefore, the proposals on List 1902 cannot be properly evaluated.
It was only by chance that PSD was made aware that this was a project. A policy specialist who attended ALA happened to attend a presentation at which a cataloger mentioned – during a question and answer period – that he had undertaken the project. He further said that the initial proposals would be on list 1902, with additional proposals to appear on future tentative lists. This type of informal announcement does not constitute consultation.

The 16 proposals that appeared on this list were withdrawn from consideration. The related proposals that appear on Tentative List 1903 will also be withdrawn, as will any related proposals that appear on future lists. The proposals will be rescheduled for a single tentative list after PSD is assured that all of the proposals have been received.
The proposals that were withdrawn from this list are: Central Salish languages; Columbia-Wenatchi language; Cowichan dialect; Island Halkomelem dialect; Lummi dialect; Nooksack language; Puget Sound Salish languages; Saanich dialect; Sechelt language; Snohomish language; Squamish Indians (B.C.); Squamish language (B.C.); Straits Salish language; Suquamish dialect (Wash.); Twana language;and Upriver Halkomelem dialect.

Other decisions:

Buddhist temple museums; Buddhist museums; Temple museums

SHM H 1916 states that existing phrase headings for types of museums should continue to be used, but that new ones should not be established. Instead, the free-floating subdivision –Museums should be used with the topic of the museum. The proposals were not approved.

Castillón Site (Santa Eulalia de Tábara, Spain)

Jurisdictions must be established in the name authority file before they can be used as qualifiers in subject headings. Santa Eulalia de Tábara has not been established. The proposal may be resubmitted after the required name authority work is completed.

Cinema Rex Fire, Abadan, Iran, 1978

The subdivision –Fire, [date] free-floats under headings for corporate bodies, buildings, structures, etc. A heading for the motion picture theater was approved on this list; the heading Sīnamā Riks (Ābādān, Iran)—Fire, 1978 should be assigned to the work about the fire. The proposal was not necessary.

Copanatoyac (Guerrero, Mexico)

The Geonet citation provided in the proposal indicates that Copanatoyac is a first-level administrative subdivision. It should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Crow language

This proposal was made to add a UF to the existing heading. The meeting requests that explicit evidence showing that Apsáalooke is a variant name for Crow be provided; usage of the word Apsáalooke in a title is not sufficient, especially because the spelling is so different. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Diplomatic and consular service, Serbian

Only the Serbian-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Druze women

This proposal sought to add an unnecessary level of hierarchy. The proposal was not approved.

Cast-iron pipe

This proposal sought to add the RT Ductile iron pipe to the existing heading. Cast-iron pipe and Ductile iron pipe (a proposal for which was approved on this list) are both NTs of Iron pipe.  H 370 sec. 2 states that two headings with a common broader term at any level of the hierarchy cannot be linked as RTs. The proposal was not approved.

Espionage, Romanian

The information provided in the proposal indicates that the work contains surveillance records of the Romanian secret police, but does not indicate where the surveillance took place. If it occurred within Romania, then the heading Espionage—Romania should be assigned. If it took place outside Romania, however, the proposed heading would be appropriate. If necessary for the work, the proposal may be resubmitted with additional information from the work that supports the need for the heading.

Hochberg family

H 1631 sec. 3.a states that the nationality or location of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged, but the citation did not include that information.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hymns, Northern Sami

The information in the citation to the work being cataloged states, “includes elements from the yoik tradition, a Northern Sámi translation, and Norwegian translation.”  That information does not support the proposal because yoiks are folk songs, not hymns, and the heading should reflect the original language, not a language of translation. The proposal may be resubmitted with additional and/or revised information if the proposed heading is appropriate for the work.

Katsurayama family

H 1631 sec. 3.a states that the nationality or location of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged, but the citation did not include that information.         The proposal may be resubmitted.

Porth yr Aur (Imaginary place)

Only the Welsh-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed and supports the qualifier and broader term.

Saamia (African people)

The citations provided in the proposal do not support the choice of heading, since the word “Saamia” does not appear in them. In addition, entries in Joshua Project and Ethnologue list different authorized and variant names for this ethnic group. A proposal that cites authoritative ethnographic reference sources and that supports the choice of heading and references may be resubmitted.

Schloss Wolfenbüttel (Wolfenbüttel, Germany)

The proposal should provide an English-language description or summary of the work being cataloged, and that description should support the choice of BTs. In addition, German-language UFs that are not supported by the research should be removed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Tarḫunna (Hittite deity)

Headings for individual deities have been established in the name authority file since July 2013 (see H 405 and H 1635). The proposal was not approved.

Taşhan (Tokat, Tokat İli, Turkey)

The citations provided in the proposal should provide English-language information that supports the choice of broader term. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Te Roroa (New Zealand people); Ngāi Te Rangi (New Zealand people)

These proposals were made to remove three UFs from the existing heading Te Roroa (New Zealand people) and establish them separately. Two of the citations in the authority record for the Te Roroa people indicate that Ngāi Te Rangi is an earlier name for the Te Roroa, making the UFs valid for that heading. Evidence that those sources were incorrect, or that later scholarship has disproved the relationship, should be provided. The proposals may be resubmitted.

United States. Constitution—Expulsion clause

The expulsion clause is Article 1, section 5, clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution, and should be established in the name authority file. Three existing subject headings for specific clauses of the Constitution will be cancelled and re-established in the name authority file.
The meeting also notes that the heading United States. Congress—Expulsion may be sufficient for the work being cataloged.

The proposal was not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Classical crossover music

Classical crossover music is not a genre nor a form. According to the citations provided, the phrase “classical crossover music” can be used for a wide variety circumstances, including, but not limited to, a classical artist singing pop, a pop artist and a classical artist collaborating, a rock group performing with orchestral accompaniment, or an artist inserting a electronic instruments into a classical piece. The terms Art music (UF Classical music) and Popular music should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Cuneiform tablets

This proposal was originally marked resubmit on Tentative List 1810, and the Summary of Decisions for that list stated, “The citations provided showed evidence of usage of the phrase cuneiform tablets, but did not provide a description or definition. The proposal may be resubmitted.”

The resubmitted proposal included a Wikipedia citation that defined cuneiform, but not cuneiform tablets. The draft manual for LCGFT states in instruction sheet J 160 sec. 1.a(5) that “Sources cited should apply specifically to the term being proposed. For example, citing the presence of the word blues in a general dictionary is not sufficient authority in itself to justify the term Blues poetry.” Defining cuneiform, but not cuneiform tablets, is therefore insufficient. Further, sec. 1.b of the same instruction sheet says that crowdsourced websites, including Wikipedia, are not generally considered to be authoritative when proposing genre/form terms.

Regardless, a cuneiform tablet is not a genre nor a form, but a format: it is a clay tablet that has cuneiform writing on it. The proposal was not approved.
