CLASSIFICATION

BP135.8.G46

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Hadith—Geography for details.

LG169.K28

The resource appears to be about the Bengali Department of Sarakāri Sā'data Kaleja and it should be classified in PK1657, the study and teaching of Bengali. The proposal was not necessary.

LG169.M476

According to the name authority record, Al Manar Central College is a primary and secondary school.  It should be classified in LG170.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PG3899.3.S87

Surzhyk is a mixed language, and mixed languages are classified in PM7801-7895.  A proposal for a cutter in PM7895.A-Z may be resubmitted.

PH3136.5.P38

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Patriotic literature, Hungarian for details.

Table G3494 .S2

A cutter for St. Walburg was proposed under .W+, and was changed during the editorial process to .S2. St. Walburg was already established at .S2, so the proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

African American ballerinas

The citation for the work being cataloged should explain how the work relates to the proposed heading; the name of a ballerina is not sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Altaic languages

This proposal was made to add two UFs to the existing heading. The proposal should provide evidence that the Altaic languages are indeed also known as Transeurasian languages.  Usage of the word Transeurasian in a title is not sufficient. In addition, the heading does not have any BTs, so the appropriate BTs should be added to the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Aquarian (Wiccan sect)

The only support provided for this proposal was an email exchange, apparently with a practitioner. This proposal was made by a library with a large research collection on Wicca, so the meeting requests that the proposal include evidence that authoritative reference sources were consulted. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bulgaria—Civilization—Russian influences

The citation of the work being cataloged provides a cataloger’s translation of the title, but that title does not indicate that Bulgarian civilization was influenced by Russia. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Catholic gay men; Catholic gays

These proposals were made to change the BTs to Christian gay men and Christian gays, respectively. The meeting does not wish to create an additional level of hierarchy for sexual and gender minorities of particular religious denominations and wishes to retain the current practice, as shown by the headings Mormon gays, Presbyterian gays, and Protestant gays, which all have the BT Gays, and Presbyterian gay men, which has the BT Gay men. The proposals were not approved.

Coura River Valley (Portugal)

Only the Portuguese-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

D’Arcy Island (B.C.)

The citations provided in the proposal refer both to the island and to the marine park that appears to be coextensive with the island. Due to the conflicting citations, the meeting could not determine whether a heading for the island or the park was needed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Emir Han (Bursa, Turkey)

The citations in the record do not support the choice of the BT. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Glaciology; Ice

These proposals were made to connect Glaciology and Ice with related term references. The two headings share a common BT, Earth sciences, and are thus ineligible to be RTs, per H 370. The proposal was not approved.

Group work in witchcraft

Headings in the form Group work in […] have been approved only for disciplines (e.g., Group work in education), and witchcraft is not a discipline.  Further, the meeting approved the proposal Solitary practitioners (Wiccans), which is to be used for Wiccans who work alone and the heading Covens already exists for groups of witches and Wiccans.  Group work in witchcraft is on a continuum between solitary practitioners and covens, and the meeting does not wish to split hairs over how many individuals participate in a ritual, or how they participate.  The proposal was not approved.

Hadith—Geography

Only the Urdu-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Ice-atmosphere interaction

This proposal was made to add revise the BTs to Atmospheric science and Glaciology. The interaction between ice and the atmosphere does not have a class/class member, instance, or whole/part relationship to either atmospheric science or glaciology.  The proposal was not approved.

Kenyah (Bornean people)

This proposal was made to revise the heading from Kenyah (Southeast Asian people) and add another BT. The heading revision is change for change’s sake because there is not a conflict and the existing heading is accurate. The heading revision was therefore not approved. The proposed revision to the BTs is probably acceptable, but most of the information provided in the citations is irrelevant and it was therefore difficult to review the proposal. A proposal to revise the BTs and add 670s that are pertinent to the heading and references may be resubmitted.

Köbes

Köbe is a local word for waiters in Brauhäuser in Cologne, Germany and is too specific for LCSH.  The heading Waiters should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Koza Han (Bursa, Turkey)

The citations in the record should support the choice of the BT, but they do not. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kutuzovskiĭ prospekt (Moscow, Russia)

The citation provided in the proposal lists “earlier names or parts of entire avenue” as one consolidated list. The earlier names should be provided as UFs and the citation should be clarified. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Multiple religious belonging

The source citations in the proposal do not define what is meant by the phrase multiple religious belonging.  Instead, they provide usage of the phrase and a quotation that appears to be a single individual’s statement of faith, neither of which is sufficient to justify the heading or the scope note. In addition, the scope note is written as though “multiple religious belonging” is a class of persons when it says, “Here are entered works on individuals who …”. Finally, the proposal does not include a BT as required by SHM H 370.  The proposal should be supported by authoritative sources, and the citations to those sources should provide definitions as well as usage. Guidance on the research and citation requirements for proposals may be found in SHM H 202 and H 203. A proposal with appropriate citations, an accurate scope note, and a BT may be resubmitted.

Northern Tamir River (Mongolia)

The citation for Geonet lists several variant names that were not provided as UFs. If those names are pertinent to the feature (that is, if they are in languages spoken in Mongolia), then they should all be included as UFs. If they are not, then the meeting requests that a note to that effect be added to the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nuclear explosions

This proposal was made to add UFs for Nuclear test explosions to the existing heading. The heading applies to explosions caused by testing, accidents, use in war, and any other circumstance in which a nuclear explosion would occur. Approving the proposed UFs could be misleading because the references could unintentionally limit the perceived meaning of the heading. The proposal was not approved.

Ocean-atmosphere interaction

This proposal was made to add the BT Atmospheric science to the existing heading, which already has the BTs Marine meteorology and Oceanography. The list also included a proposal to add Atmospheric science as a BT to Meteorology, and that proposal was approved. One of the BTs of Marine meteorology is Meteorology.  SHM H 370 states that a heading should be linked only to the next broadest level of hierarchy.  The proposal was not approved.

Patriotic literature, Hungarian

Only the Hungarian-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Reportage literature, Israeli

Only the Hebrew-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The meeting would appreciate if the information were to specifically indicate why the work is (or is about) reportage literature, as opposed to journalism or the press.  A BT should also be provided.

Sabīl Muḥammad ʻAlī (ʻAqqādīn, Cairo, Egypt)

SHM H 1334 sec. 3.c specifies that when there are two or more structures with the same name in the same city, the street name should be added to the geographic qualifier in order to make a unique heading. This proposal added the city section instead.  The proposal may be resubmitted with qualifiers that include the street name, along with a proposal for the name of the street if it is not already established.  Additionally, UFs to bring the significant words to the front should be added to the proposal for the drinking fountain, per H 1334 sec. 4.

Soares family

H 1631 sec. 3.a states that the nationality or location of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged, but the citation did not include that information. The meeting also requests that proposals for three related terms be made: Suarez family; Soares de Albergaria family; and Soares Barbosa family, per H 1631 sec. 3.b and sec. 3.c.  Finally, the MARC coding in the second citation in the proposal should be corrected.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Speeches, addresses, etc., Bulgarian

The citation of the work being cataloged provides a cataloger’s translation of the title, but “The speeches of General Khristo Lukov” does not support the qualifier in the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Taichung Harbor (Taiwan)

Geonet lists several variant names that were not provided in the citation or in the UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

United States. Congress. Senate—Call to Order

This rule should be established as a name/title access point in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

War in motion pictures

The work being cataloged should be assigned the heading War films. The proposal was not necessary.

Weather

This proposal was made to change the BT Meteorology into an RT, thereby turning Weather into an orphan heading. The meeting could not find a substitute BT, so rather than creating an orphan, the proposal was not approved.

Yivli Minare (Antalya, Turkey)

The Yivli Minare appears to be the minaret of a mosque, and this therefore a building detail.  It should be proposed according to the instructions in H 1334 sec. 5, which require that it be qualified by the name of the building and also have a BT for the name of the building. The mosque should be established in the name authority file if necessary, and the proposal should be revised. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Announcements

Terms for filmed and televised forms and genres

Terms in the form Filmed […] and Televised […], along with some others that were constructed in a similar style (e.g., Filmed plays; Televised operas; Radio debates), were approved during the early stages of the development of LCGFT because the base term did not yet exist and the terms were needed to catalog audio-visual materials. Thirty-seven of those terms are no longer necessary because the base terms were added during the literature, music, and “general” genre/form projects; they were cancelled on this list. Each of the cancelled terms has been retained as a “former heading” UF reference to its replacement term(s). For example, Filmed interviews has been cancelled and is now a reference to Interviews and Nonfiction films, which should be assigned instead.

Terms of this type that represent high-level collocation points (e.g., Filmed performances) remain valid, as do terms for which it is not possible to approve a base term. As an example of the latter, Filmed baseball games is still valid because a baseball game is neither a genre nor a form.

Scope notes for “broadest terms”

Eleven “broadest terms” – the terms that represent the top level of a discipline, such as Radio programs and Law materials – were given scope notes indicating that they could be used only for collections “that are composed of multiple genres and/or forms to which more specific headings” cannot be applied. The scope notes essentially restated the principle of specificity, which is explained in instruction sheet J 110 of the draft manual for LCGFT. The notes were unnecessary and were removed on this list.

A similar scope note on Pictures was retained because it contrasts the definitions of the terms Pictures and Art in addition to addressing the principle of specificity.

Other decisions:

3-D pictures

Genre/form proposals for art terms are not being accepted yet, so the proposal was withdrawn without review.

Board books

Board books are a format, not a genre or form. The proposal was not approved.

Botanical checklists; Zoological checklists

These proposals represent the topics of checklists. The proposal for Checklists was approved on this list, and it should be assigned along with subject headings that represent the topics (e.g., Plants; Animals). The proposals were not approved.

Clemency petitions

This proposal represents petitions with the subject matter clemency; clemency petitions are not a specific form. The work being cataloged should be assigned the genre/form term Legal petitions along with one or more subject headings representing the topic of the petitions being discussed. The proposal was not approved.
