CLASSIFICATION
Announcements
PN4550-4583, Social media
The classification range PN4550-4583, Social media, was approved on this list. Works about the content of social media and collections of excerpts from social media, including the content of individual social media platforms, should be classified there. Works about the technological and sociological aspects of social media should continue to be classed in the T and HM schedules, respectively.
Literary author numbers in name authority records
According to DCM Z1, PCC members may use the 053 field to record literary author numbers in name authority records only if the classification number has been assigned in a completed bibliographic record displayed in LC’s online catalog. If the number does not appear in a completed LC bibliographic record, the PCC member must request LC verification of the desired number by using the form at http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/053/053prop.html.
It is important to follow this procedure because LC’s catalog includes numerous records that are suppressed from the OPAC. PCC libraries therefore are unable to determine whether the numbers they wish to assign conflict with literary author numbers previously established in LC’s catalog.
This is the case even if the PCC member has made a proposal to add the literary author number in the LC classification schedules. The number that was proposed may have to be adjusted for a variety of reasons, and if the number is included in the name authority record before it is approved, there is a high potential that an inaccurate number will be used by an unsuspecting cataloger. (For guidelines on proposing literary author numbers, see CSM F 632 sec. 3.a.)
PCC members who wish to add literary author numbers that are not verified by LC may use the 053 field with second indicator 4, and include the library’s MARC institution code. Example:
053 #4 $a [number] $5 [MARC institution code]
Please see DCM Z1 for a full explanation of the policy.
Relationship of the work being cataloged to the classification proposal
Unlike subject proposals, only a citation to the work being cataloged is required for most classification proposals, and that citation usually does not need to include a clear statement of the work’s relationship to the number being proposed. The classification proposal policy differs from that for subject proposals because policy specialists can view the associated bibliographic record in the proposing library’s catalog and examine the subject headings assigned to determine whether the classification number proposed is necessary and appropriate. (In the case of literary author numbers, the author’s name authority record is examined instead of, or in addition to, the bib record.)
Occasionally, though, fully cataloged bib records are not publicly available in the library’s catalog, which makes approval of the proposals much more difficult. For example, this Tentative List included several proposals for which the associated bib record did not include subject headings and otherwise looked like a preliminary record. Other times, it seems that the bib record may have been suppressed from public view until the cataloging is completed.
For now, the policy of optionally adding a clear statement of the work’s relationship to the proposal will remain unchanged. However, the meeting encourages all catalogers to add such statements to their proposals when the associated bib record either is not publicly available, or does not include the appropriate subject headings.
As always, the meeting thanks those catalogers who include such statements as a matter of course.
Other decisions:
B5244.N2945-.N29454
Tenpū Nakamura was the founder of Japanese yoga (according to Wikipedia, called Shinshin-tōitsu-dō). It would be logical to think that the work being cataloged might be about the philosophy of Japanese yoga. However, the work is currently cataloged as a general work about Nakamura’s contributions to Japanese philosophy. If it is about Japanese yoga, then the cataloger needs to make a subject proposal for Japanese yoga and a class proposal for it at BL1238.5.A-Z, special schools of yoga. If Nakamura made other contributions to philosophy and the work being cataloged is about those contributions, then this proposal may be resubmitted with an explanation in the citation.
BL1239.82.O53
Onam is a secular festival celebrated by all Keralites, regardless of their religion. The subject proposal that accompanied this classification proposal has been changed from Onam (Hindu festival) to Onam (Festival). In accordance with the decision on the subject proposal, Onam should be classed in DS485.K44 (local history of Kerala) or in GT3930+. The proposal was not approved.
[BP104.23-.23212] through [BP130-134]
The languages proposed on this list should be classed in BP105.A-Z “Other languages. By language, A-Z, and date.” The proposals were not approved.
[DT159.6.B582]-DT159.6.N54
Blue Nile is a variant of Nīl al Azraq (Sudan). Captions in the classification schedules do not repeat variants from the authorized heading. The proposals were not approved.
E99.W39
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Watlala Indians, below for details.
HC79.T47
This proposal was made to add a caption for Thriftiness into the economic history of Korea. However, thriftiness is defined as a topic of personal finance, which should be classed in HG179+. Additionally, the caption in the proposal used the term “thriftiness movements,” which would need to be established as a subject before being used as a caption. The proposal was not approved.
N3750.K8; N3750.K83
The proposal for N3750.K83 was made to add the new name of a museum in Kuala Lumpur, however, the museum is the same as the one represented by the existing number N3750.K8. When a museum’s name changes, LCC practice is to keep the existing number and change the caption to the new name with a note that gives the former name. (See N3750.T63 for an example.) The proposal for N3750.K83 was not necessary. The proposal for N3750.K8 may be resubmitted.
PG3467.K643
Abraham Uri Kovner was a literary critic, not a literary author. The work should either class with the topic, and according to the first subject heading that is Hebrew literature, Modern—History and criticism, or with biography of critics of Hebrew literature in PJ5007.5.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.
PJ7542.B42
There was no English provided in this proposal, and there were no subject headings assigned to the record in the SACO library’s catalog. According to Google Translate, the Arabic title does not include any words that approximate the topic of beards. The subject headings assigned to the record in OCLC indicate that the work is about versification in Arabic poetry. The cataloger should reexamine the work and may resubmit the proposal if it really is about beards as depicted in Arabic poetry, but only after either providing subject headings on their record and/or providing an English-language description of the resource in the proposal.
PL210.O74
There was no English provided in the proposal, and there are no subject headings assigned to the work in the SACO library’s catalog. The headings assigned in the OCLC record do not match the proposal. The cataloger should reexamine the work and may resubmit the proposal if it really is about the philosophy of the Other in Turkish literature, but only after either providing subject headings on their record and/or providing an English-language description of the resource in the proposal.
PN1995.9.C82
The work appears to be about the development of the Cuban film industry, not about motion pictures depicting Cuba. It should be classed in PN1993.5.C8. The proposal was not necessary.
Additionally, the bibliographic record contains a subject heading with the subdivision –International cooperation. This subdivision refers to official cooperation among countries, not cooperation among individuals from multiple countries. The cataloger should reexamine the work to adjust the subject heading.
PS3525.O5329
Moore, Alice G. is not established in the name authority file, and none of the other “Moore, Alice” records look like a reasonable fit. The cataloger needs to either establish the author, or change the caption to match the way the author is established. The proposal may be resubmitted.
PT7073.P65
According to the subject headings assigned, the work is about Arctic regions as depicted in Scandinavian literature, not polar regions. A proposal for Arctic regions may be resubmitted.
PT9295.H67
The work being cataloged appears to be about Swedish horror tales. If that is the case, a proposal for Horror tales, Swedish needs to be submitted. The work should class in PT9487.A-Z, special forms of Swedish prose fiction. A class proposal should also be resubmitted.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1154, Languages
$v Conversation and phrase books (for plantation workers)
H 1195, Land vehicles
$x Transmission devices, Continuously variable
Other decisions:
Asmodeus (Jewish mythology)
Asmodeus is an individual legendary character who should be established in the name authority file (per H 1635 and H 1795). The proposal was not approved.
Bedey (Bangladeshi people) in literature
Only a Bengali title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Flagstaff Lake (Me.)
GNIS was cited in a 675 in this proposal, but the lake with variants is present in GNIS. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Danilovskiĭ univermag (Moscow, Russia)
It is not clear that the name of the structure is different from the name of the store that occupies it. If it is the same, then the corporate name heading for the store should be used, per H 1334. If the names are not the same, the cataloger should provide some information in English that would clarify the situation. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Folk literature, Lushai
The title “Folk literature” was the only information provided from the work being cataloged. Support for the entire proposed heading, including the qualifier, should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Food studies
The proposal did not provide an explanation of what this heading would be used for, and the UFs that were chosen make it ambiguous. The UF Food—Study and teaching, would be used for works about how to teach about food, not for the results of the scholarship. The proposed UF Food scholarship would be for the results of scholarship.
Many of the headings in the form [topic] studies had the same problem of ambiguity. Most of them have been cancelled in favor of [topic]—Study and teaching (e.g., Asian American studies; Byzantine studies; Islamic studies; Jewish studies; Ethnic studies; Middle East studies; Soviet studies; Arabic studies). There are a few [topic] studies headings remaining, and they represent classes of persons (either explicitly or implicitly).
The meeting prefers to continue the practice of applying headings that specifically reflect the subject of the work. The works being cataloged are about several topics including one on the methods of studying food and another on the results of research. Headings appropriate to their focus should be assigned, such as Food—Study and teaching, Food—Religious aspects, Food consumption—Social aspects, Nutrition—Study and teaching, etc.
The proposal was not approved.
Goldfields-Esperance (W.A.)
The 670s clearly state that Goldfields-Esperance is an administrative subdivision, and as such it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
Humorous stories, Manipuri
Only the Manipuri-language title of the work being cataloged, “Ahiṃbā phāgi,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.
Jewish baseball players; Jewish boxers; Jewish soccer players
These proposals were submitted to insert the BT Jewish athletes into the headings’ hierarchies. The meeting prefers not to establish NTs for athletes under particular religions. Jewish athletes will be removed as the BT from the existing heading Jewish basketball players. Also, the proposals contained no citation to current work being cataloged, which is required. The proposals were not approved.
Kelabit Highlands (Sarawak, Malaysia)
Geonet has a citation for the Genting Kelabit, in Sarawak, Malaysia, which is identified as a ridge. The cataloger should provide additional evidence clarifying whether or not the ridge and the highlands are the same. The proposal may be resubmitted.
LSD (Drug)—Microdosing
A microdose is a simply a variation of the amount of a drug, but it is still a dose. The meeting prefers to add a UF Microdosage on the existing heading Drugs—Dosage, which may be assigned along with a heading for the drug. The proposal was not approved.
Lushai wit and humor
Only the Lushai-language title of the work being cataloged, “Zoram sana pui,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.
Maracu River (Brazil)
The citation to the work being cataloged refers to Rio Maracu. The Geonet citation refers to Riacho Maracujá. The cataloger should provide evidence that they are the same river. For instance, perhaps the name cited in Geonet was used in the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information that clarifies the situation.
Maracu River Watershed (Brazil)
The watershed proposal may be resubmitted with the proposal for the river.
Motion pictures, Marathi
The cataloger should provide information in English that explains the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposed heading. The Wikipedia citation is insufficient to verify the relationship of the work to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sharing economy
After reviewing resources in the LC catalog, the meeting determined that the existing heading Cooperation has been used to express this concept. As a result, the proposed heading and UFs will be added as UFs on the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.
The existing heading Cooperation, however, remains unevaluated. The meeting will review the heading and other headings that are conceptually related as well as resources in the catalog in order to improve and update the heading.
Pléiade (Group of poets)—Dictionaries; Pléiade (Group of poets)—Language; Pléiade (Group of poets)—Language—Glossaries, etc.
There is no precedent in LCSH for establishing subdivisions of these types under literary groups. The subdivision –Dictionaries is free-floating “under subjects,” but a heading structured in that way would mean dictionaries of the group called Pléiade, not dictionaries of the words used by the group in their works. The subdivision –Language would mean language that is used about the topic of Pléiade, not language that the members of Pléiade used. The subdivision –Language—Glossaries, etc., can be used under individual persons and individual literary works entered under title. However, the usage being proposed would be far different from the intended use of the subdivision string.
The headings Pléiade (Group of poets) and French language—Middle French, 1300-1600—Glossaries, vocabularies, etc. should be assigned to the work being cataloged.
The proposals were not approved.
Political satire, Iranian
Only the Persian-language title of the work being cataloged, “Az ūn bālā kaftar mīʹāyah,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.
Political satire, Lushai
Only the Lushai-language title of the work being cataloged, “Zoram sana pui,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.
Riddles, Marathi
Only the Marathi-language title of the work being cataloged, “Mahārāshṭrācī sā̃skr̥tika leṇī,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the proposed heading.
Sexual predators
A clear definition of this term was not provided, nor could the meeting find one. The distinction between sex offenders and sexual predators seems to be a matter of degree that is not clearly delineated. For example, in law, the offenses largely overlap and the standards of applying the term “sexual predator” versus the term “sex offender” vary from state to state. The meeting determined that, without a clear distinction, the terms would be difficult to assign consistently. Therefore, the term Sexual predators will be added as a UF onto the existing heading Sex offenders. The proposal was not approved.
Transverse lady beetle
H 1332 sec. 1 states that a heading for a subspecies may be established as a common name if the subspecies is well-known. The fact that a work is about a particular subspecies might seem to indicate that it is well-known enough. However, in this case, the common name is not unique to this subspecies. The common name transverse lady beetle is also used for the species Coccinella transversalis.
The citation from the work being cataloged states that the work will address the full species (Coccinella transversoguttata) rather than only the subspecies. Thus, a heading for the subspecies is not required for the bibliographic record.
This proposal for the subspecies was not approved.
Ulica Lipowa (Białystok, Poland)
There is no need to establish the street in order to establish a house known by its street address. The proposal was not necessary.
User-generated content—Law and legislation
The proposal was submitted with some English, but there was not enough English provided to explicitly indicate the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Watlala Indians
No usage of the proposed heading was provided from the work being cataloged, which appears to be about several tribes. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Wenshan Guojiaji Ziran Baohuqu (China)
The only difference in the heading is in the word division, and the word division used throughout the citations is the same as that used in the already-approved heading. The proposal was not necessary.
Zines
The proposed RTs have the same BT. H 370 sec. 2 clearly prohibits making RTs that would link two headings that have a common broader term at any level of the hierarchy. The proposal was not approved.
Fan magazines
This proposal seeks to add Zines as a BT of Fan magazines and to add E-zines as an RT of Fan magazines. However, E-zines is already an NT of Zines, and Zines and Fan magazines have the same BT. The proposal was not approved.
