CLASSIFICATION

DR2080.7

The work being cataloged is the same as the one in the proposal for D1056.2.K67, and it was proposed by the same library. There should be only one class proposal per work, and this DR number is inappropriate for the work. The proposal was not necessary.

DS113.8.B83

There is nothing in the 670 or in the bibliographic record that indicates that the Bukharan Jews discussed in the work are in Israel. The proposal may be resubmitted.

P120.G39

The work was miscataloged due to an incomplete galley. It should be classed at P120.S48. The proposal was not necessary.

P209

Documentation of languages should be classed in the existing number P128.D63. The proposal was not necessary.

PK1800.95.R39-.R3995; PK1968.95.P39

These classification proposals may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Rathwi Bareli language; Pawari dialect below for details.

When the proposal for PK1968.95.P39 is resubmitted, the proposal should not be a cancellation, it should be a proposal to parenthesize the number and add a see reference referring to the new number range.

PL960.7.H97

Resubmit with the subject proposal for Hypertext poetry, Korean. See below for details.

PN6519.N33

Resubmit with the subject proposal for Proverbs, Ndau. See below for details.

P-PZ20 81.H66

This work appears to be about gay erotic poetry, not the depiction of homosexuality in poetry. The proposal may be resubmitted with a subject proposal for Gay erotic poetry, Mexican. The classification proposal will need to be changed appropriately.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Freedom of speech in universities and colleges; Academic freedom

Freedom of speech is an integral part of academic freedom, and it applies to staff, faculty, and students alike. It is doubtful that many works about freedom of speech on campus would be silent on academic freedom in general, or that works about academic freedom do not discuss freedom of speech. The proposals were not approved.

Alto Naya (Cauca, Colombia)

The meeting was not able to find an authoritative source of information about this region. However, there is a river named the Naya in Cauca, and alto is Spanish for upper. Is it possible that the Alto Naya is the region around the Upper Naya river? If it is, then the river needs to be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Atlases—Kazakhstan

It is not necessary to establish a heading with a geographic subdivision simply to add a UF reference for an earlier established form of the heading. Since the existing subject heading Atlases may be subdivided geographically, this proposal was not necessary.

Brazilian fiction; Brazilian poetry

The proposals were submitted in order to add UF references in the form [language] fiction—[place] and [language] poetry—[place].  References of this nature are added only on [language] literature headings, not on headings for the major genres of the literature.  The proposals were not approved.

Hardwickia binata

The broader term for a species should be the genus, so, the broader term on this heading should be Hardwickia, for which a subject heading should be proposed (per SHM H 1332).  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the genus.

High school students’writings, Afghan

The work being cataloged appears to be a collection of letters, which are not belles lettres. The heading being proposed would be applied to belles lettres. H 1480 sec. 6 indicates that the heading Afghan letters should be assigned instead, along with High school students—Afghanistan—Correspondence. A proposal for Afghan letters may be resubmitted.

Holocaust survivors’ writings, French

The work being cataloged is a collection of personal narratives, and the heading is not intended to be applied to personal narratives. The proposal was not necessary.

Humorous recitations

The changes that were proposed for this heading are not appropriate. Monologues should not be added as a BT because Recitations is a BT on Monologues. Not all humorous monologues are comic, so the addition of the UF Comic monologues is not appropriate. The UF Monologues, Humorous, which was being proposed for deletion, should be retained. The proposal was not approved.

Humorous recitations, Dutch

LCSH does not include headings for recitations qualified by language, and the meeting chose not to begin the pattern. The work is more than adequately cataloged with the other headings assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Ibaloi language

This proposal was made to make changes to the existing heading, but no citation to a work being cataloged was provided as required by H 202 sec. 1.a.(1). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kawasan Perlindungan Lembah Imbak (Sabah, Malaysia)

The form selected for use as the heading was not supported in the 670s. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kayapa Kallahan language

The proposal was submitted with no 670 citation to a work being cataloged, which is required by H 202 sec. 1.a.(1). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Operation Beacon Star, 1967; Operation Crockett, 1967

The works being cataloged are not about these operations, according to the 670 citation in each record. The proposals were not necessary.

New Elizabethanism

LCSH does not include headings for Victorian, Edwardian, Elizabethan, Georgian, or any other style.  The style is used only as an adjective for artistic forms, etc. The heading Great Britain—Civilization—1945- should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Nöteborg (Sweden : Fortress)

This fortress was active into the 20th century, so it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not necessary.

Operation Iceberg, 1945

The summaries of decisions for 0841 and 1124 stated that battles and operations are established separately, therefore a UF for the battle of Okinawa should not be added to this heading. The proposal was not approved.

World War, 1939-1945—Campaigns—Japan—Okinawa Island

The battle of Okinawa consisted of a series of air raids from October 1944 to April 1945, followed by a land and sea invasion in March and April 1945. The battle is established as a geographic subdivision because it consisted of numerous discrete engagements. The existing heading and reference will remain unchanged. The proposal was not approved.

Outside, The; Outside, The, in literature

As shown by the 670s, “outside” has numerous definitions and the heading is highly ambiguous. The existing heading Other (Philosophy) in literature can be assigned to the work being cataloged instead. The proposals were not approved.

Padma Bridge (Bangladesh)

The heading for this bridge should be qualified by the jurisdictions that it connects, per H 1334 sec. 3.e. It appears that one of the jurisdictions needs to be established first. Also, the proposal should include a 781, not a 667. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Proverbs, Ndau

The proposal provided no information in English with which the meeting could evaluate the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Rathwi Bareli language; Pawari dialect

A proposal to change Pawari dialect to Rathwi Bareli language should be submitted as a proposal to change the original heading, not a new proposal plus a cancellation.  The proposal to change Pawari dialect may be resubmitted.

Retired librarians

The author self-identified as a retired librarian, but the work being cataloged is a novel that does not appear to be about retired librarians. The proposal was not necessary.

School verse, Guatemalan

The description in the citation to the work being cataloged does not indicate that it is school verse. LC’s subject cataloging of the work used Children's writings and Children's poetry, Guatemalan, which matches the actual description given. The proposal may be resubmitted if the cataloger can provide evidence that the poetry was written in school.

Statue of Liberty National Monument (N.Y. and N.J.)

This proposal was made simply to add information in a 670 field.  It is not necessary to submit a proposal to have information added to an authority record if the information does not change the meaning of the heading.  Catalogers may email the Policy and Standards Division ([email protected]), and the information will be added editorially.

Sufficiency economy

Sufficiency economy is a theory that has been promulgated piecemeal by the King of Thailand for several years, yet the only source for information about the theory is the government of Thailand. The existing heading Thailand—Economic policy—1986- would adequately cover the topic. The theory stresses the middle path, a basic teaching of Buddhism, therefore other headings such as Economic development—Religious aspects—Buddhism and Economic development—Moral and ethical aspects may be applied. Also, it appears that the theory supports moderation in consumption to avoid financial collapse, so the heading Consumption (Economics) could be assigned as well. The proposal was not approved.

Taman Warisan Tasek Merimbun (Brunei)

There was no evidence provided to prove that this is a national park and therefore the BT is not supported. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Vietnam, Northeastern

H 760 states that geographic headings with directional qualifiers must be well-defined and generally recognized in English-language reference sources. Authoritative reference sources such as Britannica and Columbia gazetteer do not include northeastern Vietnam. A citation from Wikipedia is not sufficient. The proposal was not approved.

Whittall family

The proposed heading should be a variant on the existing heading Whitall family (sh 97003132).  A proposal to add the UF on the existing heading may be submitted.

According to information in the 670, the proposed UF, Vitol, is the Turkish form of the English family name Whitthall. H 1631 sec. 3.c. says that similar names from different ethnic backgrounds should be established as separate headings and connected as related terms.  A separate proposal for Vitol family may be submitted.

This proposal was not approved.

Women poets, Kannada

The citation to the work being cataloged does not precisely identify the women as Kannada. Perhaps the location provided was meant to indicate that the poetesses were Kannada, but that fact cannot be assumed. Also, the citation identifies the women as Vaishnavites, which is a different caste. The cataloger should provide clear evidence that the women poets were Kannada. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Zenaga language

The proposal was submitted with no 670 citation to a work being cataloged, which is required by H 202 sec. 1.a.(1). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Zer̄goş (Kurdish tribe)

The proposal cites only Wikipedia, and that citation refers to the town of Zargush, not to the people.  Some Arab and Kurdish tribes have the same names as the town in which they live, but the cataloger should supply some supporting evidence from an authoritative source other than a Wikipedia citation. The proposal may be resubmitted. When the proposal is resubmitted, it should include a broader term.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Funeral orations

There is a slight difference between funeral orations and eulogies, but the meeting feels that the difference is slight enough to cause catalogers difficulty if they had to decide which term to apply.  Funeral orations was added as a UF on the term Eulogies. At the same time, the BT Occasional speeches was added to Eulogies.  This proposal was not approved.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

flowerpot

This proposal was made to add two UFs to the existing heading, but no citation to a work being cataloged was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
