CLASSIFICATION

Announcement

Cutter proposals for personal, geographic, and corporate names, etc.

According to Classification and Shelflisting Manual instruction sheet F 350 sec. 2, certain types of cutters are generally not printed in the classification schedules and do not need to be proposed. They include personal names, corporate bodies, and geographic names when they appear in lists of those names. Two other categories are names of languages, when a topic is subarranged by language, and titles of individual works, except for literary works from early periods up to 1500. By tradition or policy, there are some schedules in which all or most cutters for those types of entities are proposed and printed. For example, cutter numbers for most philosophers are established, as are numbers for some literary authors.

Several unnecessary proposals for cutters appeared on this list but were approved. If unsure whether a proposal is necessary in a particular situation, LC catalogers should contact a policy specialist in PSD and SACO catalogers should contact [email protected] to inquire.

Other decisions:

LG481.A59

This institution is a technical university, not a general college or university. The note at LG1 indicates that educational institutions limited to a special field should be classed with the field. Since this is a technical university, it classes in T171-173, for which a proposal is not necessary. The proposal was not approved.

P96.B43-.B432

The topic of this work is about the use of Berber languages in mass media, not their representation. (See comments about Berber languages in mass media.)  Thus, the work may be classed at P96.L34-.L342, about the use of language in mass media. The proposal was not approved.

PN56.A53

Based on the subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged, the work seems to be primarily about imaginary histories. An alternative proposal was made for D16.118, Imaginary histories as a technique or methodology of history. The proposal was not approved.

QH148.8

This proposal was made to add Brunei to the list of countries under Asia. However, a number for Brunei already exists at QH193.B7, under Other Asian regions or countries. The proposal was not necessary.

TL214.E928

The proposal was made to add exhaust manifolds to an A-Z list of construction details for automobiles. However, exhaust manifolds are already included in TL214.E93 for exhaust systems, with the note “Including exhaust manifolds.” The proposal was not necessary.

Z250.5.D56

The proposal was made to add DIN type to an A-Z list of styles or forms of type. A subject heading for DIN type should be established first. The classification proposal for DIN type may be resubmitted with the accompanying subject heading proposal.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Authors, Garhwali

The qualifier for this proposed heading is for an ethnic group.  Since the ethnic group is not yet established, it needs to be proposed.  The Authors, Garhwali proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the ethnic group.

Bangala Dam (Zimbabwe)

It is not clear from the citations given whether the proposal is for a reservoir or for a dam, as both have the same name in the citations. Research indicates that Zimbabwe uses the same name for both the dam and its related reservoir, so the meeting was unsure which of the two was needed for the work being cataloged. The citations should indicate which heading is desired and qualify the proposed heading appropriately. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Berber languages in mass media

The proposed heading would describe how Berber languages are treated in mass media. The subject of the work being cataloged is use of the Berber languages by the mass media. The work may be assigned the headings Mass media and language and Berber languages. The proposal was not necessary.

Billava (Indic people)

The proposal included a classification number in the 053 field, but the classification number has not been established. The proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the classification number.

Bonri Mountains (Gongbu, China)

The citations for this proposal indicate that Bonri is a single mountain, but the proposed heading is for a mountain range. Also, the mountain range has been qualified with the province, but there is no indication in the citations that there are two mountains or ranges with the same name (see H 810 sec. 2.b). It is unclear to the meeting whether the work being cataloged is about a mountain or a mountain range, and if the citations and/or the proposed heading needs to be modified to reflect the focus of the work. The qualifiers also need to be justified by information in the citations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Carmans River (N. Y.)

GNIS was referenced for this proposal, but the variant names were not cited and proposed as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ch’ae family

According to H 1631 sec. 3.a, information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family should have been provided in the proposal, along with the family name as expressed in English, if the English form is available. A proposal that includes this information may be resubmitted.

Clatsop Indians

The proposal included a classification number in the 053 field, but the classification number has not been proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for the classification number.

Dhangar (South Asian people)

This proposal was made to add the UF Gauliga to this subject heading. Given the significant difference between the proposed UF and the existing heading and UFs, the meeting requests additional information that shows that Gauliga is a variant name of the Dhangar people. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Empirical legal research

The concept of empirical research is not unique to legal research, but is used in many other disciplines. Previous cataloging of this concept has been handled by assigning a combination of headings, such as Empiricism in combination with the heading from the discipline, e.g., Sociology—Research; Legal research. The meeting wishes to continue that practice, rather than create a heading for a specific type of research within each discipline. The proposal was not approved.

Encyclopedias and dictionaries, Berber

The scope note for Encyclopedias and dictionaries explains that headings such as Encyclopedias and dictionaries, [language] are assigned to comprehensive reference works in that language that consist of explanatory articles arranged alphabetically or topically and that are not limited to a specific topic.  The scope note on Encyclopedias and dictionaries further states, “Works about dictionaries of a specific language are entered under the heading for the language with subdivision Lexicography,” for example, Berber languages—Lexicography.  The work being cataloged is about dictionaries of the Berber languages, and is not a dictionary itself.  The work should be assigned the heading Berber languages—Lexicography. The proposal was not necessary.

Furries (Persons)

The citations given did not define what furries are, nor justify the use of the BT. A definition of furries should be provided in the citations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Galleria Alberto Sordi (Rome, Italy)

The Galleria Alberto Sordi is an arcade, which is a type of shopping center. Shopping centers are established in the name authority file under the provisions in SHM H 405 and DCM Z1. The proposal was not approved.

Hasala (Indic people)

The citation provided was from 1975, but the meeting would prefer a more current source. For example, Joshua Project provides an extensive citation on this people group and also indicates that a different form of name may be preferred. Further research to determine the preferred name may be necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kŭmsusan T'aeyang Kungjŏn (P'yŏngyang, Korea)

The name of the palace Kŭmsusan Kinyŏm Kungjŏn (LCCN sh2001003787) was changed to Kŭmsusan T'aeyang Kungjŏn. When a building’s name has changed, the existing subject heading should be revised instead of proposing a new heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Montenegro—Politics and government—1878-1918

While the span 1878-1918 is clearly a significant period in Montenegrin politics and government, the span given is not in accord with the existing heading Montenegro—History—Nicholas I, 1860-1918. The instruction sheet H 1942 sec. 2.b specifies that, “Generally chronological subdivisions established under [place]Politics and government should be the same as those used under the subdivision –History for that place but without any intervening descriptive terms.” Furthermore, the LC database shows that the number of works cataloged in this area is comparatively small and the file would not benefit from further subdivision. The proposal was not approved.

Mythology, Tahitian

The justification for this heading should have been provided in the 670 field, but was included in a note in the 952 field.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cognitive enhancement

The concept of improving cognitive performance has been covered by the existing heading Cognition. The meeting wishes to continue that usage. The proposal was not approved.

Newspaper court reporting

This proposal was made to add the UF Trials—Press coverage to this subject heading. Press coverage of a trial is not synonymous or nearly synonymous with Newspaper court reporting. The proposal was not approved.

Pflumm family

The citation for American Family Names that was provided indicates that Pflaum (a proposed UF for Pflumm family) and Pflum are variant names for the same family, which infers that Pflumm family and Pflaum family should be UFs for the already established heading Pflum family. As a result, the names Pflumm family and Pflaum family have been added as variants to Pflum family. The proposal was not approved.

Picture dictionaries, Serbian

SHM H 202 sec. 1.a(6) states that information that supports the heading should be quoted or paraphrased in English, yet no English was provided, only a title in Serbian. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Piel family

A search of American Family Names indicates that the name Piel is a variant of Piehl, which is already established in LCSH. As a result, Piel family has been added to the Piehl family as a UF, and the RT to Peale family has been added to that record. The proposal for Piel family was not necessary.

Social acceptability

The proposed heading is extremely ambiguous and could be applied to many different topics such as, for example, social acceptability of spitting, or of divorce. Also, the concepts have been adequately covered through the use of the free-floating subdivision –Social aspects under topical headings, assigned in combination with other headings. This proposal seems to have been made to represent the concept of social approval of projects that exploit natural resources. These concepts could be expressed through a combination of headings, such as Natural resources—Management—Social aspects; Mineral industries—Environmental aspects; and Social responsibility of business. The proposal was not approved.

Wax Lake Delta

This proposal did not include any information about the delta in the citation for the work being cataloged. Further, the GNIS citation is for the Wax Lake Outlet, which is defined as a bay. The meeting questions whether this proposal is for the delta or the bay. If it is for the bay, the heading should reflect the name used in GNIS. If it is for the delta, the name of a delta should be based on the name of the lake, which also needs to be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Web fiction

Web fiction, as described in the citations, seems to be fiction that is published on the web. There is no indication that the content is different from traditionally published fiction. Further, the work being cataloged appears to be about the publishing process. Therefore, the meeting feels that such works may be described with headings such as Fiction—Electronic publishing or Serialized fiction—Electronic publishing, as appropriate. The proposal was not approved.

Yo family

According to H 1631 sec. 3.a, information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family should have been provided in the proposal, along with the family name as expressed in English, if the English form is available. A proposal that includes this information may be resubmitted.

Youths’ writings, Lithuanian

SHM H 202 sec. 1.a(6) states that information that supports the heading should be quoted or paraphrased in English, yet no English was provided, only a Lithuanian title. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Imaginary interviews

The imaginary interview is a literary device used in both fiction and nonfiction. It is not a clearly defined genre, and consequently the meeting found it hard to imagine this term being useful for collocation. The proposal was not approved.
