CLASSIFICATION

BM670.M45

The work being cataloged appears to be a prayer for healing for agunahs, and the proposed caption is the formulaic beginning of any prayer for healing.  The concept of healing is not represented in the subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged, and the first heading assigned is Agunahs—Prayers and devotions.  Therefore, the meeting preferred that the work be classified in BM667.W6, Jewish prayer and service books for women.  The proposal was not necessary.

BP52.3

The work is about islamophobia in Europe and should class with Muslims as an element of the population in Europe at D1056.2.M87.  The proposal was not necessary.

KJA2170.H85

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Human body (Roman law) below for details.

M1831.F28

This classification range is subarranged by ethnic group; however, the ethnic group has not been established.  A proposal for the language, not the ethnic group, is approved on this list.  The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with a subject proposal for the ethnic group.

PL838.H636

Shimizu is not a literary author; he is a literary scholar and critic.  The work being cataloged is a diary, which should class with biography of critics of Japanese literature in PL713.A3-Z. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1156, Literatures
                                    $x Northern Irish authors

Announcements:

Atlases

This list included proposals to change the policy for assigning subject headings to atlases.  The heading Atlases will now be eligible for assignment to all geographic atlases, regardless of coverage, instead of being limited solely to world atlases.  Atlases may also now be subdivided geographically to reflect the place of publication of the atlas.  As a result, all headings of the type Atlases, [nationality], were cancelled and replaced by the formulation Atlases—[country]

The geographic or topical coverage of an atlas will continue to be assigned headings of the type [place]—Maps and [topic]—[place]—Maps (e.g., Pennsylvania—Maps and Real property—Pennsylvania—Maps).

Works about atlases published in a specific place may now be assigned the heading Atlases—[place]—History, regardless of the geographic coverage of the atlas.

Existing bibliographic records will be revised as time permits.

            Other decisions:

Atlases—Panama

The only information given in support of the proposal was the Spanish title.  SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6) states that information that supports the heading should be quoted or paraphrased in English.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bible stories, Cebuano

SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6) states that information that supports the heading should be quoted or paraphrased in English; yet no English was provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Biologging

The meaning of this term is the same as the existing heading Animal radio tracking.  A UF for Biologging will be added to the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement

The cataloger provided a scope note, but provided no supporting citation for that scope note.  Also, the rules for BTs should be reviewed, because BTs on the proposal are not appropriate.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Brexit

European Union—Membership covers both sides of the coin: those who are in the EU, and those who are not (or who are trying to get out).  It is not uncommon for countries to withdraw from treaties and international organizations, but they rarely have common names or trendy portmanteaus. The heading European Union—Great Britain (with the UF Brexit) will be created, and should be used instead.  Other headings, such as European Union—Membership, Great Britain—Foreign relations—European Union countries, and Great Britain—Foreign relations—1997- could also be assigned.  The proposal was not approved.

Globalization

The proposal seeks to make the subdivision Globalization free-floating under topics; however, most concrete nouns cannot be globalized (Automobiles—Globalization? Toothbrushes—Globalization?).  The scope note on Globalization clearly limits it to economic, cultural, political, and social institutions. The heading Education and globalization can be assigned to the work being cataloged.  Other headings, such as Education, Higher--International cooperation, and Educational change could also be assigned.  The proposal was not approved.

Hague, Treaty of, 1717

This proposal seeks to cancel the 1717 Hague Treaty in favor of a 1720 Hague Treaty, but the treaties are not the same. The 1717 Treaty was a treaty of alliance between Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands, signed on January 4, 1717.  The 1720 Treaty was the peace treaty signed on February 17, 1720 at the end of the War of the Quadruple Alliance.  The proposal to cancel the 1717 Treaty in favor of the 1720 Treaty was not approved.

Human body (Roman law)

The only information provided in the proposal in support of the heading was the title of the work being cataloged, Il corpo in Roma antica.  SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(6) states that information that supports the heading should be quoted or paraphrased in English.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lactic acidosis

Information from the work cat should be provided to show the relationship between the work and the proposed heading.  The cataloger provided only the title, Lavoie, from the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Protest literature, Serbian

The information provided supports the fact that the work being cataloged is about protest literature, but it does not support the choice of qualifier, i.e., Serbian.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

São João River (Brazil)

The information provided from the work cat indicates that the river is chiefly in the municipalities of Carambei and Castro, which are both in the state of Paraná. The other citations refer to a river of the same name in the state of Rio de Janeiro.  The cataloger should provide information to indicate which river this is, and also should consider whether there should be a change to the qualifier.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Sofer (The Hebrew word)

The extremely useful information provided in the cataloger’s note, which is information found in the work cat, should be included in the work cat citation (670 field).  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Thonotosassa, Lake (Fla.)

The cataloger cited GNIS but did not include the variant names found there.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Visual poetry, Greek; Visual poetry, Greek (Modern); Technopaignia

The information provided in the cataloger’s notes in the Visual poetry proposals, which is information found in the work cat, should be included in the work cat citations (670 fields).  The proposals may be resubmitted along with the proposal for Technopaignia.

Windows communication foundation (Software framework)

The meeting noted that software frameworks, which are suites of software, have been established both in the name authority file and as subjects (for example: Windows workflow foundation [no2006008490]; Microsoft .NET Framework [sh2001002966]).  SHM H 2070 Background states that individual computer programs should be established in the name authority file.  H 2070 will be revised to state that software frameworks and software packages also should be established in the NAF.  The proposal was not approved.

Existing subject headings for software frameworks will be cancelled as quickly as possible on an upcoming list.

Women ambulance drivers

The information provided from the work being cataloged includes a name, but it provides no information about whether the work has a particular focus on the sex of the person.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

DEMOGRAPHIC TERMS

Natural history museum curators

The meeting determined that LCDGT should not include terms for curators that reflect the subject matter of a museum. Instead, curators in all types of museums should be assigned the term Museum curators, which is approved on this list.  The proposal for Natural history museum curators was not approved.

Police dispatchers

The meeting determined that LCDGT should not include terms for specific types of public service dispatchers, a.k.a. 911 operators or emergency operators.  Instead, public service dispatchers for all types of services should be assigned the term Public service dispatchers, which is approved on this list.  Upward references for the particular services (police, fire, law enforcement, and ambulance) will be added to the heading Public service dispatchers.  The proposal for Police dispatchers was not approved.
