PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young
CLASSIFICATION
BR1369.5
For LCSH and LCC purposes, Chad is considered to be located in either West Africa or Central Africa. This proposal placed it in North Africa. The work should be classified in BR1463.A-Z, individual countries in West Africa. The proposal was not approved.
PK6549.S345
The work being cataloged is a collection of poetry by two authors, and is therefore a literary collection (see CSM F 634). It should be classified PK6436, collections of poetry since 1500. The proposal was not necessary.
PN4899.A-Z
This proposal was made to add the instruction “Subarrange by main entry” to the existing table. Two cutters, the first representing a local place and the second, an individual newspaper, are already assigned. Therefore, an additional instruction to “subarrange by main entry” would merely reiterate the general policy to add digits to the second cutter in order to represent the main entry. The proposal was not approved.
QP535.Z6
This proposal was made to add zinc to the list at QP535.A-Z, but the list is generated by the application of Table Q1. The table already includes zinc at .Z6. The proposal was not necessary.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
A (The letter)
The only information provided in the citations was “Rayne, Blake. a, 2013,” which is insufficient to support the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with a brief summary of the work being cataloged.
AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting
The broader term for this proposal indicates that the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting is an examination. However, the source citations in the record seem to refer to it as a qualification or certification level, or perhaps even a course of study. The meeting requests that the citations be clarified and the BT be edited as needed. Possible BTs include Accounting—Examinations, Accountants—Certification, Accountants—Education, or Accounting—Study and teaching. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Alzheimer’s disease patients’ writings
Only a Spanish title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Barren ground caribou hunting—Risk assessment
The subdivision –Risk assessment has not been used with the heading Hunting nor with headings for specific types of hunting. Because the meaning of the proposed heading would be ambiguous (e.g., risk to the hunter, risk to an individual caribou, or risk to the caribou population in general) the meeting prefers that the headings Barren ground caribou hunting and Adaptive harvest management be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
Benefactors
This proposal was made in part to request that the use of the free-floating subdivision –Benefactors be expanded to include all corporations, instead of being limited to headings for individual educational institutions.
For-profit corporations do not have benefactors in the generally understood sense of the word. The meeting considered whether the use of the subdivision could be expanded to nonprofit organizations only, but the status of an organization is not always evident. Regardless, there is no precedent for allowing the free-floating use of a subdivision only under nonprofit organizations.
Further, LCSH already includes headings for particular types of benefactors, including for example Art donors, Educational benefactors, Hospital benefactors, Library benefactors, and Literary patrons.
Additional headings for particular types of benefactors may be proposed and post-coordinated with corporate name headings as necessary. The proposal to expand the use of the subdivision –Benefactors was not approved, but the other proposed changes to the record were accepted.
Buddhist philanthropists
The citation for the work being cataloged indicates that it is a register of donors who contributed money to the building of a Buddhist ordination hall. Donors to Buddhist organizations, building funds, etc., are not necessarily Buddhist. If it is clear from the work that the donors are in fact Buddhist, then a proposal with a clarified citation may be resubmitted. Otherwise, the proposal was not necessary.
Cambridge English: Preliminary for Schools
One of the proposed UFs, Preliminary English Test for Schools, does not match the citation provided, which says, “Preliminary Exam in English for Schools.” The meeting was unable to confirm whether the UF or the citation was in error. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Curzon Street Station (Birmingham, England)
The citations in the proposal do not support the proposed BT, Railroad stations—England. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Eiklor family
Eiklor is a variant form of the family name Agler, which is established in LCSH as Agler family. UFs for Eiklor family and the proposed variant forms were added to Agler family. The proposal for the separate heading was not approved.
Mittelstaedt family
Mittelstaedt is a variant form of the family name Middelstedt, which is established in LCSH as Middelstedt family. A UF for Mittelstaedt family was added to Middelstedt family; the proposed UFs are already UFs to the existing heading. The proposal for the separate heading was not approved.
Escalante River Watershed (Utah)
The variant forms proposed as UFs to the existing heading are not capitalized in the work being cataloged and therefore do not appear to be formal names. The proposal was not approved.
Exiles’ writings, Mexican
The work being cataloged appears to be primarily about the theme of exile in literature, and only secondarily about the writings of Mexican exiles. The proposal may be resubmitted with a clarified source citation if at least 20 percent of the work is specifically about Mexican exiles’ writings.
Experimental poetry, Czech
The proposal includes a brief English-language summary of the work being cataloged, but that summary does not support the language qualifier in the proposed heading. The language of a literary anthology cannot be assumed from the language of the title. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Extreme sports—Law and legislation
Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Adventure and the law,” was provided in support of this proposal. The title does not bear a clear and obvious relationship to the proposal, and the meeting requests that a short summary of the work be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Huamali Indians
This proposal cited Joshua Project, but the citation did not include the variant names listed by Joshua Project. The proposal may be resubmitted with a complete citation for Joshua Project, as well as cross-references based on that citation.
Impington Hall (England)
The citation for the work being cataloged provides useful information about the name and history of Impington Hall, but not where it is located. The proposal may be resubmitted with that information.
Kohlmann family
According to H 1631 sec. 3.a, the proposal should have included information about the nationality or location of the family as presented in the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Lu Mien dialect
The work being cataloged indicates that Lu Mien is a dialect, but Ethnologue says that it is a language. More research should be done to determine whether it is a language or a dialect. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Manoir de Kernault (France)
The manor was provided as a descriptive access point in the bibliographic record for the work being cataloged. It should therefore be established in the name authority file under the provisions in SHM H 405 and DCM Z1. The proposal was not approved.
Northern Ireland Conflict, 1968-1998
The existing heading Northern Ireland—History—1969-1994 covers the period of the Northern Ireland Conflict (commonly known as “The Troubles”), and it has been used for all of the works about the conflict. The closing date of the chronological subdivision, 1994, reflects the date of the cease fire. The closing date in the proposed heading, 1998, reflects the date of the ratification of the Good Friday Agreement, which formally ended the conflict.
There are a significant number of books about The Troubles that cover the period 1968-1998, entailing the assignment of two headings, Northern Ireland—History—1969-1994 and Northern Ireland—History—1994- . The meeting therefore determined that it would be appropriate to revise the existing headings to Northern Ireland—History—1968-1998 and Northern Ireland—History—1998- . The analogous headings for the politics and government of Northern Ireland during those years were similarly revised. Finally, several UFs were added to the heading that represents The Troubles.
The proposal for Northern Ireland Conflict, 1968-1998 was not approved.
Oland family
The meeting requests that the cataloger recheck the Dictionary of American Family Names to determine whether there is a relationship between the Oland and Ölander families; the latter is already established in LCSH. In addition, the citation of the work being cataloged should include information about the nationality or location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.c. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Pakistan—Politics and government—1947-1971
The meeting acknowledges that the proposed date span is significant in the history of Pakistan, and that the proposed heading may be useful. However, it is generally difficult to establish a new chronological subdivision so long after the fact because of the voluminous BFM that often results.
Only eleven (11) bibliographic records were reported for updating, although LC’s catalog includes over 1,520 bibliographic records that have the subject heading Pakistan—Politics and government, sometimes with additional topical or form subdivisions. The heading Pakistan—Politics and government has also been subdivided by several invalid chronological subdivisions that fall either partially or totally into the span 1947-1971. Each of the 1,520+ records must be examined to determine whether – and how – it should be edited. All of the records for works that are specifically about the period of 1947-1971 would need to be updated if the proposal were approved.
The meeting needs to know how much BFM is necessary before making a decision on the proposal. The cataloger should therefore provide an accurate list of the LCCNs for the bibliographic records that would have to be updated if the proposal were to be approved.
In addition, a revised proposal should include a citation to a reference source that explains the significance of the chronological subdivision being proposed.
The proposal may be resubmitted.
Palazzo Bonvicini (Venice, Italy)
The palazzo was provided as a descriptive access point in the bibliographic record for the work being cataloged. It should therefore be established in the name authority file under the provisions in SHM H 405 and DCM Z1. The proposal was not approved.
Pen drawing, Italian
Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Florentine sketches,” was provided in support of this proposal. The title does not bear a clear and obvious relationship to the proposed heading, and the meeting requests that a short summary of the work be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Peru—Civilization—Chinese influences
The proposal includes a cataloger-supplied translation of the Spanish-language title. However, the translation, “China and Peru : in art and culture,” does not bear a clear and obvious relationship to the proposed heading, and the meeting requests that a short summary of the work be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Saint Vincentian poetry (English)
The work being cataloged is a collection of poetry by a single author. According to H 1800 sec. 2.b, such collections should not be assigned a form heading unless the heading includes a topical aspect or the poems are of a highly specific form. Neither criterion was met. Therefore, this proposal and the related proposals Saint Vincentian literature and Saint Vincentian literature (English) were not necessary.
São Miguel Arcanjo Site (São Miguel das Missões, Brazil)
In order to support the qualifier, the proposal should include a citation that indicates the location of the site. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Silver embroidery
Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Jewelled textiles: gold and silver embellished cloth of India,” was provided in support of this proposal. Textiles may be embellished in various ways, so the title is not sufficient to justify the proposed heading. The meeting requests that a short summary of the work be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sisapo Site (Almodóvar del Campo, Spain)
Two proposals for the same site, based on the same work, appeared on the list. The proposal Silsapo (Extinct city) was approved. The proposal Sisapo Site (Almodóvar del Campo, Spain) was not necessary.
Two thousand fifteen, A.D.
The work being cataloged is about the Tower of London. H 620 sec. 2.c states that general headings for years should be assigned “only to general works on the time period not limited to specific topics.” Because the work is about a specific topic, the proposed heading was not necessary.
Two thousand thirteen, A.D.
The work being cataloged appears to be a biography of a composer. H 620 sec. 2.c states that general headings for years should be assigned “only to general works on the time period not limited to specific topics.” Because the work is about a specific person, the proposed heading was not necessary.
Wey Manor Farm (England)
It is unclear from the citations whether the farm is, or includes, a named archaeological site, or whether the antiquities there were discovered through happenstance. The meeting would appreciate the provision of a clarified citation. In addition, the citations should also include the location of the farm, in order to support the qualifier chosen. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Women teachers, Black
This proposal was made to add broader terms. According to H 370 sec. 1.a(1), inverted headings that are qualified by names of ethnic groups do not have BTs “when the only appropriate BTs are the identical heading without the qualifier, the identical heading with a broader linguistic, national, or ethnic qualifier, or a broader heading with the identical qualifier.” The proposal was not approved.
