CLASSIFICATION
BL2018.5.C85
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Sikhism and culture below for details.
BS325.N7
Ntcham language is not established in LCSH. It appears that Ntcham might be a variant of Tobote language. Ethnologue indicates that Ntcham is the official name for the language, so, if Ntcham and Tobote are the same language, a proposal should be submitted to revise the heading Tobote language. If the two languages are not the same, a proposal for Ntcham language should be submitted. The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for a new or revised subject heading.
BS325.T38
Temne is a variant of Timne, which is established (BS325.T5). Instead of creating this new number, Temne will be added to the existing caption at BS325.T5. This proposal was not necessary.
DK511.R5
The proposal seeks to change the number for Ria͡zanskaia͡ oblast' from DK511.R9. The meeting felt that the change would be an unnecessary disruption in the schedule. The proposal was not approved.
DS24.5
The Moghal people group is located in Southeast Asia, but this number would place the group in Asia in general. The current list contains a dozen or more changes to headings that differentiate the Mogul Empire from the Moghal people. As a result, a substitute classification proposal, DS523.4.M63, was submitted as a replacement for the current proposal. The proposal for DS24.5 was not approved.
DS27.57
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Kimek (Turkic people) below for details.
DS393.83.D35
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Dalu (South Asian people) below for details.
DS432.L64
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Lohra (Indic people) below for details.
DS432.S414
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Sēnaikkudaiyān below for details.
DS493.9.D36
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Damai (South Asian people) below for details.
DS493.9.K36
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Kamis below for details.
DS798.422.B33
The Baarin people are in Inner Mongolia, and should be classed in DS73.A-Z. A proposal in DS73 may be resubmitted.
DS798.422.U73
The Urad people are located in China, and should be classed in DS731.A-Z. A proposal in DS731 may be resubmitted.
GV1796.B26
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Balos dance below for details.
P96.C66-.C662
This classification proposal was not necessary. See Communalism and mass media below for details.
PK6424.S63
The proposal is a number in prose and prose fiction, but the cataloger noted that the first subject heading assigned is Persian literature—Social aspects—Iran, which should class in PK6409. If the work really is about Persian prose literature or Persian prose fiction, then the subject cataloging should be revised and the proposal may be resubmitted.
PL4625-4625.95
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Eravallan language below for details.
PN56.3.P84
The work being cataloged does not appear to be about the representation of Puerto Rico in literature, but about the depiction of memory, history, and islands in literature. More appropriate class numbers would be: PN56.M44, PN50, or PN56.I7. The proposal was not necessary.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1100, Classes of persons
$x Crimes against $x Law and legislation (May Subd Geog)
H 1103, Ethnic groups
$x Crimes against $x Law and legislation (May Subd Geog)
Other decisions:
Ahikuntaka (Sri Lankan people)
The classification number that is in the 053 field in this proposal has not been established. The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the classification number.
Cirques (Glacial landforms)
H 370 sec. 2, 2nd bullet: Do not make related term references … to link two headings that have a common broader term at any level of the hierarchy. The proposal was not necessary.
Balos dance
Is this the same dance as Ballos (Dance), a dance of Greece and Cyprus, which is a UF on Syrtos (Dance)? If the dances are indeed the same dance, it appears that Ballos (Dance) should be removed from Syrtos (Dance) and established separately, and a revision of the heading Syrtos (Dance) should be submitted. If the Ballos (Dance) and Balos dance are not the same, evidence of that should be provided in the proposal, which may be resubmitted.
Bihari Mohalla (Bhopal, India); Annu Nagar (Bhopal, India)
Both of these headings are properly established in the NAF. The proposals were not approved.
Birmingham Terminal Station (Birmingham, Ala.)
The information provided in the source citation (670 field) identifies the station as a “terminal station” but does not state that it is a railroad station, therefore, the BT is not supported. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Buchères Massacre, 1944
The 670s seem to indicate that this massacre occurred in the town of Buchères. If that is the case, then it should be reflected in the heading, per H 1592. The town of Buchères is is not yet established in the NAF. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Chateau de la Madeleine (Chevreuse Valley, France)
First, the cataloger should provide information from the work cat. in English, so that the proposal can be evaluated. Second, the work cat citation appears to give two different forms of name, so additional research to determine the most common form of name should be performed. Third, a building is never qualified by a geographic feature. It should be qualified by the town or the country in which it is located. Fourth, is this really a castle, which is intended for defensive purposes? Chateau literally translates to castle, but the BT could be Castles, Palaces, or Dwellings, depending on how the building is/was used. The proposal may be resubmitted with revisions and including additional information provided to clarify these issues.
College students’ writings, Bosnian; … Bulgarian; … Croatian; … Serbian
These proposals are all for the same work, which is a literary magazine for Balkan studies. None of the proposals include a citation that is specific to the language being proposed. These proposals originally appeared on List 1701. The Summary for that list requested that the educational level of the students be clearly stated, which was accomplished on these proposals. As the proposals were being reviewed for the second time, the meeting suggested that a better heading would be College students’ writings, Balkan, particularly since the work is a serial, and a broader heading is often a better idea. None of these proposals were necessary in that case, and a replacement proposal for College students’ writings, Balkan could be provided and approved. However, if the cataloger wants the individual language headings, the proposals could resubmitted again, this time including in the citations the languages represented.
Communalism and mass media; Riots and mass media
[topic] and [topic] headings are for reciprocal relationships at a high level, per H 310. However, the work being cataloged is not about the reciprocal relationship. Instead, the headings for the resource should be: Riots—Press coverage and Terrorism—Press coverage. The proposals were not necessary.
Cồn Cỏ Island (Vietnam)
GeoNet indicates that the island is coextensive with a jurisdiction of the same name. If that is the case, a NAR should be created for the jurisdiction instead. If not, the proposal for the island may be resubmitted.
Dady family
Information from the work cat should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family. It is not sufficient to provide the ethnicity or nationality of the family name from a reference source such as the Dictionary of American Family Names. Providing the information from the work cat is a way to record the nationality, etc., of the family so future decisions about whether a variant is appropriate, whether the variation is the result of immigration, etc., is clear. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Dalu (South Asian people)
The proposal does not include any information in English to support the form of the heading, UFs, or BTs. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Damai (South Asian people)
Information was provided in the proposal from Joshua Project, but the information did not include the countries in which the Damai reside, nor the long list of alternate names. The proposal may be resubmitted.
East Coast (India)
The proposal should provide citations to one or more reference sources showing that that particular area is called the East Coast of India. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Ekven Cemetery Site (Russia)
The cataloger did not provide any indication in the citation that this cemetery is an archaeological site as opposed to a cemetery that is currently accepting (or has recently accepted) burials. The proposal may be resubmitted
Eravallan language
Ethnologue was cited but variants found there were not added. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Euonychophora; Peripatidae; Peripatus; Udeonychophora
The classification number that is in the 053 on each of these proposals represents Onychophora, which is the phylum of velvet worms. These proposals represent lower taxonomic levels of the phylum. The classification schedule in this area should be expanded to include the systematic divisions to accommodate these taxons under QL448. The proposals may be resubmitted along with an expansion of the classification schedule.
Exhibition design
The proposal sought to change standard LCSH practice of using the authorized free-floating subdivision, --Design under the heading Exhibitions, in favor of establishing the direct phrase. No compelling reason was provided to make this change, and the meeting chose to follow well-established LCSH policy. The proposal was not approved.
Fergana Valley
The cataloger cited Geonet but did not include the long list of variant names found there. The proposal may be resubmitted.
I͡Altynsʹkyĭ hirsʹko-lisovyĭ pryrodnyĭ zapovidnyk (Ukraine)
The cataloger should provide evidence in English to support the choice of BT, or choose a more appropriate BT. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Jimmerson Lake (Ind.)
The cataloger cited GNIS, but did not include any of the variant names listed there. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Journalists, Turkish
The general rule in H 350 sec. 1. expressly states, “Do not use adjectival qualifiers that represent jurisdictions or geographic regions in connection with classes of persons.” The correct heading is Journalists—Turkey. The proposal was not approved.
Kamis
Joshua Project was cited, but the citation did not include any of the variant names found there. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Kimek (Turkic people)
An authoritative reference source should be found and cited. The cataloger cited Wikipedia, which indicates that Kimeks primarily dwelt in Manchuria and on the Korean Peninsula. If Wikipedia is correct, the qualifier and BTs need to be adjusted. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Law—Swiss influences
The excellent information that was provided in the cataloger’s comment field (952) should be included in the 670 for the work cat. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Johra (Indic people)
There is nothing in the citations that indicates that the Lohra are a scheduled tribe, which is one of the BTs. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Mahaweli Live Stock Farm (Sri Lanka)
According to H 690, this heading should be established in the vernacular of the country. No evidence of an attempt to find the Sinhala or Tamil form was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Mémorial de l'abolition de l'esclavage (Nantes, France)
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The BT should reflect the subject the memorial is memorializing. There should be inverted UFs, per H 373, and, the UFs should be qualified. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Miju-Mishmi (Indic people)
The classification number in the 053 should be proposed. Ethnologue was cited, but none of the variant names found there are included in the proposal. Ethnologue also indicates that the Miju-Mishmi people are in China as well as India. There is also an entry on Joshua Project, which could be cited in addition to, or instead of, Ethnologue. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Nakba, Palestine, 1948
Nabka refers to the 1948 expulsion of Palestinian Arabs from British Mandate Palestine (today’s Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Jordan). The existing heading Population transfers—Palestinian Arabs is synonymous, or nearly synonymous, in meaning to the heading being proposed; it should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
National Capital Region (India)
This region is established in the NAF. The proposal was not necessary.
Oske Artsiv (Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan); Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan)--Medals, badges, decorations, etc.
The proposal contains no support in English to justify the BT or the qualifier. The proposal and its backdoor heading may be resubmitted.
Patent examiners
Corporate body headings, even with topical subdivisions, should not be BTs of topical headings. A definition of the term should be provided, and perhaps the term Patent offices—Officials and employees should be considered for the BT. Also, several 675’s were included in the proposal, but the 675 field, Source Data Not Found, is not repeatable. In the 675, multiple source citations are contained in a single field separated by $a. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Radio plays, Sanskrit
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Riddles, Danish
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Rocky Mountain Front (Mont. and Alta.)
The Rocky Mountain Front is the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, which extends from New Mexico into British Columbia. The “front” is merely the edge of the mountains, and the meeting was reluctant to establish a separate heading for it, particularly if the heading represents only the part of the front that is in Alberta and Montana. Rocky Mountain Front will be added as a UF on Rocky Mountains. This is an analogous situation to the heading Allegheny Mountains, which has a UF Allegheny Front. The proposal was not approved.
Rubber boa; Charina
The taxon for the family Charinidae, which should be a BT on the proposal for Charina, has not been established in LCSH. A proposal for the family should be resubmitted along with the proposals for Rubber boa and Charina.
Satirical plays, German
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Second Severn Crossing (England and Wales)
H 1334 says to qualify a bridge by the local place with which it is most closely associated, or if the structure is associated equally with two places, use both. The citations should indicate which places are connected and qualify the proposed heading appropriately. Also, the source citations only support use of the term “crossing,” but a crossing is not necessarily a bridge. Information supporting the BTs should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sēnaikkudaiyān
The reference source cited is from 1975 and conflicts with the up-to-date information in Joshua Project. The list of Notified Scheduled Tribes that is available on the website of the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India also does not agree with the 1975 reference source. The research should be redone with current reference sources. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Severn Road Bridge (England and Wales)
H 1334 says to a qualify bridge by the local place with which it is most closely associated, or if the structure is associated equally with two places, use both. The citations should indicate which places are connected and qualify the proposed heading appropriately. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sikhism and culture
It is not clear from the information provided in the proposal that the work being cataloged is about the relationship between Sikhism and culture from the perspectives of both topics (see H 310, Background). The proposal may be resubmitted.
Smooth snakes
This proposal represents a species, which should be established in the singular. Further, the genus Coronella should be established at the same time as the species (per H 1332 sec. 4.b.). The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for Coronella.
Sofer (The Hebrew word)
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Sefer (The Hebrew word)
The cataloger should provide information in English with which the proposal can be evaluated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Music conductors’ spouses
The proposal sought to change the heading Spouses of music conductors to Music conductors’ spouses, which is a phrase that already appears as a UF in the existing authority record. The meeting believed that the proposal represents change for change’s sake. The proposal was not approved.
Swamp buggy racing
A heading for Swamp buggies should be established at the same time. The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for Swamp buggies.
Townsites
Townsites are new towns, for which LCSH has the heading New towns. The proposal was not necessary.
Vineyard worship
The Association of Vineyard Churches is an evangelical denomination, which should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
Zanskar (India)
The proposal may represent a jurisdiction that needs a NAR, or it could be a geographic region that needs a subject. The cataloger should perform additional research to determine which. The proposal may be resubmitted.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Closet drama
This term indicates only that the drama is not intended to be performed, and not any particular genre or form of the play itself. The proposal was not approved.
Demonyms
Demonyms are the subject of encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc., not a genre or a form. The proposal was not approved.
Fairy plays
The source citations provided make it clear that fairy drama is a narrow subset of fantasy drama. The meeting preferred that the genre/form terms Fairy tales and Fantasy drama be post-coordinated. The proposal was not approved.
Fairy poetry
The source citations provided make it clear that fairy poetry is a narrow subset of fantasy poetry. The meeting preferred that the genre/form terms Fairy tales and Poetry be post-coordinated. The proposal was not approved.
Televised contests
According to citations provided, the work being cataloged is a televised singing competition, but the proposed term was also intended to cover everything from televised hot-dog-eating contests to televised marching band competitions. LCGFT already includes several terms for specific types of contests: Beauty contest television programs; Reality television programs; Television game shows; and Television quiz shows. Approving the proposal as presented clearly would have led to unevenness in the treatment of televised competitions of various types. The meeting did not wish to add another level of hierarchy by making Televised contests a BT of the existing terms, either.
The proposed term was revised to Talent shows (Television programs), which should be assigned to the work being cataloged. It may also be assigned to any other type of talent show (e.g., dancing, juggling) and to shows whose competitors display various talents (e.g., Star Search).
Additional terms for other types of televised competitions may be proposed as needed.
The proposal was not approved.
Beauty contest television programs; Reality television programs; Television game shows
Since the proposal for Televised contests was not approved, these proposals to add these terms as RTs to Televised contests were not necessary.
