CLASSIFICATION

BV3625.T8-.T82

A range of numbers for missions in Tunisia is established at BV3600-3602. The proposal was not necessary.

DS432.V395

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Velamas below for details.

DS493.9.B33

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Badis below for details.

DS493.9.H35

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Halkhors below for details.

DS493.9.N86

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Nuniyas below for details.

PL721.P68

Based on the subject headings in the bibliographic record, the work is a criticism of Japanese prisoners’ writings since 1868, and is specifically about the depiction of prisoners and prisons in those writings. However, the classification number assigned in the bibliographic record is PL755.57.P68, for collections of literary works on the topic of prisoners.

The first two subject headings assigned are Japanese literature—1868- —History and criticism and Prisoners’ writings, Japanese—History and criticism, which indicates that the work should be classified in PL725.2.A-Z, special classes of authors. A cutter for prisoners would need to be proposed.

If the preference is to class the work with prisoners as a topic in the Japanese literature of the period, then the order of subject headings should first be revised in accordance with SHM instruction sheet H 80. A cutter may then be proposed in PL722.A-Z (treatment of special classes, races, etc., in Japanese literature), so that the work may be classified in PL726.58.A-Z.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

PL957.5.I495

The subject headings assigned indicate that this is a work of criticism about Korean imagist poetry, but the number proposed is for imagism as a theme in Korean literature. A cutter for imagist poetry may be resubmitted in PL960.7.A-Z, forms of Korean poetry.

PN6110.E63; PN6110.N57

These proposals were submitted for the same work, by the same cataloger.  Only the number actually needed for the work should be proposed. In this case, the bibliographic record indicates that PN6110.N57 was used. The proposal for PN6110.E63 was not necessary.

PQ6256.H64

The subject headings assigned to the work indicate that it is a collection of writings by lesbians. The cutter proposed is for homosexuality as a special form of Spanish literature.

Homosexuality would be a topic, not a form, of literature, and would be classified in PQ6250.A-Z. However, the subject headings do not indicate that the collection is about homosexuality. According to the subject cataloging, the work could be classified in PQ6173.5.A-Z, special classes of authors of Spanish literature. A cutter for lesbians would need to be proposed. The existing number PQ6252, selections and anthologies of Spanish fiction, would also be a valid choice.

A cutter for lesbians in PQ6173.5.A-Z may be resubmitted if desired.

PQ7889.M75

The cataloger’s note in the proposal indicates that the literary author being proposed for inclusion in the schedules is Bolivian, but the proposed number is in the range for Brazilian authors. The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement

Used For references for headings in the form Introduced [organism]

The Summary of Decisions for List 12 (2016) stated that the heading Introduced snails should not include UFs that are made solely to provide reference from synonyms for the word “introduced.” Each of those variants was already provided in the record for Introduced organisms, which is a higher-level heading in the hierarchy. At that time, the meeting noted that some other headings at lower levels of hierarchy included such UFs, and they would be removed as time permited. Those references have now been removed.

Other decisions:

African American women gymnasts

According to SHM instruction sheet H 1330 sec. 1.b, biographies may be assigned a heading qualified by sex or ethnic group only if that is a significant aspect of the work. If that type of heading is assigned, it should be assigned in addition to the unqualified heading for the group.

The work being cataloged was a short biography of Simone Biles intended for children. The meeting was therefore able to scan the entire text, and found no mention of her race or ethnicity. The proposal was not necessary.

Badis

According to H 202, sec. 1.a, “Thorough authority research demonstrating that the term selected for the proposed heading is the appropriate one must be done for all concepts that are new to the LC subject heading system and outside the scope of simple and obvious pattern situations.”  This proposal was for a concept new to LCSH, and is not a “simple and obvious pattern situation,” but there was no evidence of research included. Joshua Project provides an extensive entry on the Badi, and it cites numerous variant names and also indicates that they live in India as well as Nepal. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate citations and cross-references.

Bağırov family

According to H 1631 sec. 3.a, information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family should have been provided in the proposal, along with the family name as expressed in English, if the English form is available. A proposal that includes this information may be resubmitted.

Balsignano Site (Italy)

Based on the information provided in the citations, Balsignano was a fortified rural settlement that was not abandoned until the 16th century. Instruction sheet H 715 indicates that names of cities and towns that existed beyond the year 1500 should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Children’s literature, Faroese

Only a Faroese title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Choanoflagellates

This proposal was made to add a UF to the existing heading. The new citation provided in support of the UF refers to class Choanoflagellatea. The existing heading refers to the order Choanoflagellates.  Because taxonomic classes and taxonomic orders are not equivalent, the proposal was not approved.

Digital reputation

Numerous citations proving usage of the phrase “digital reputation” were provided in the proposal, but a definition of the concept was not. The proposal may be resubmitted with a definition from an authoritative source.

Gandikota Fort (India)

There is readily available online evidence that this fort is located in the small town of Gandikota. If that is the case, then the qualifier must be based on the heading for the town, according to H 1334 sec. 3.a. Research should be done to confirm the location of the fort and that research should be cited in the proposal. The name of the location should be established in the name authority file, and the qualifier on the proposed heading adjusted, if necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Grigorʹevskai͡a premii͡a

This proposal was marked resubmit on the list for November 2016, the Summary of Decisions for which stated, “The cataloger did not provide any information in English, and the UF does not appear to be supported.  The proposal may be resubmitted with sufficient information in English to support both the heading and the UF.”

The proposal was not updated to include the required information. The proposal may be resubmitted again.

Halkhors

According to H 202, sec. 1.a, “Thorough authority research demonstrating that the term selected for the proposed heading is the appropriate one must be done for all concepts that are new to the LC subject heading system and outside the scope of simple and obvious pattern situations.”  This proposal was for a concept new to LCSH, and is not a “simple and obvious pattern situation,” but no evidence of research was provided. Joshua Project provides an extensive entry on the Halkhor that cites numerous variant names and also indicates that they live in India as well as Nepal. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate citations and cross-references.

Jāzmūriyān Plain (Iran)

According to Geonet, Dasht-e Jāzmūriyān is the name of a plain in Sīstān va Balūchistān province, as well as the variant name for another plain in the same province. Research should be done to determine whether there are in fact two plains of that name. If not, then all of the forms of name in both Geonet entries should be provided as UFs in the LCSH proposal.

In addition, the proposed UF Hāmūn-i Jāzmūriyān (Iran) is not supported in the source citations, and should be. If it is based on a variant Romanization scheme instead of being a found form, however, the meeting would appreciate a cataloger’s note to that effect because it is so different from the other UFs provided.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kalā Oya Basin (Sri Lanka)

According to H 800 sec. 9, headings for river basins are based on the name of the river (which must be established first) and are established using the word “watershed.” The Kalā Oya River is established as Kala River (Sri Lanka) and watershed is already established as Kala River Watershed (Sri Lanka). The proposal was not necessary.

Kanmer Site (India)

There was no information provided to indicate that Kanmer is an archaeological site. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kinburnian Peninsula (Ukraine)

The proposal included a description of the work being cataloged, which is appreciated. However, that description should have appeared in the source citation for the work cataloged, instead of in a 952 cataloger’s note field. The proposal may be resubmitted

Kopciak family

According to H 1631 sec. 3.a, information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family should have been provided in the proposal. A proposal that includes this information may be resubmitted.

Mālī-Sainīs

This proposal cited Joshua Project, but did not include in the citation the long list of variant names that the source provides, nor the fact that this ethnic group resides in several South Asian countries in addition to Nepal and India. The proposal may be resubmitted with a complete citation for Joshua Project, as well as cross-references based on that citation.

National characteristics, Costa Rican, in literature

The meeting questions whether this proposal accurately represents the contents of the work being cataloged.  According to the information provided, the work examines the response to contradictions between liberalism and conservatism in Costa Rica. A combination of the existing headings Right and left (Political science) in literature and Costa Rica—In literature may be more appropriate. The proposal may be resubmitted with a statement that more clearly expresses the contents of the work if desired.

Nuniyas

According to H 202, sec. 1.a, “Thorough authority research demonstrating that the term selected for the proposed heading is the appropriate one must be done for all concepts that are new to the LC subject heading system and outside the scope of simple and obvious pattern situations.”  This proposal was for a concept new to LCSH, and is not a “simple and obvious pattern situation,” but no evidence of research was provided. Joshua Project provides an extensive entry on the Nuniya that cites numerous variant names and also indicates that they reside in three South Asian countries, and not just in Nepal. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate citations and cross-references.

Osuna, House of; Benavente, House of

According to H 1574, the construction [name of house], House of, is reserved for royal houses; that is, the ruling families of monarchies.  The proposal does not provide evidence that these families are royal, and reference sources provide some evidence that they are instead ducal houses.  Ducal houses are established in the form [place name], Dukes of (see H 1574 sec. 3.a). The proposals may be resubmitted.

Parits

This proposal was made to add the UF Vaṇṇān̲ to the existing heading. Given the significant difference between this proposed UF and the existing heading and UFs, the meeting requests that a citation proving that Vaṇṇān̲ is a variant name for Parit be provided. Any additional variant forms found in the course of the research should also be cited and provided as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Patriotic literature, Slovenian

According to the information provided in the proposal, Patriotic fiction, Slovenian, is the heading needed for the work being cataloged. Because Patriotic fiction has not been established, it must also be proposed. Proposals for both Patriotic fiction and Patriotic fiction, Slovenian, may be resubmitted.

Photographic historians

This proposal was made to add a UF Photography historians to the existing heading, but no citation to a work being cataloged was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pushpagiri (Karnataka, India)

Pushpagiri may be the name of both a peak and a mountain chain, and it is unclear which heading is needed for this resource. The problem stems from the Wikipedia citation, which is unclear due to grammatical issues; it seems to say that Pushpagiri is the name of a peak, which is also called the Subramanya Hills. Catalogers are reminded again that they should not rely on Wikipedia to support subject proposals.
The proposal may be resubmitted with information that clearly indicates which heading is needed, as well as the relationship between Pushpagiri and the Subramanya Hills.

Refugees, Sri Lankan Tamil

There is no precedent in LCSH for including both the nationality and the ethnicity of refugees in a single heading. Instead, headings in the form Refugees—[place] and Tamil (Indic people)—[place] should be assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Rohtās Fort (Rohtas Plateau, India)

Forts are generally qualified by the country in which they are located (or by the first administrative subdivision in the case of the exceptional countries). If they are located in a city, town, etc., they are qualified by the name of that place.  They are not qualified by a geographic feature such as a plateau.

The citations in this proposal indicate that the fort may be located in a town. If that is the case, the proposed heading should be qualified by the name of that town, which should first be established in the name authority file. If the fort is not in the town, then the qualifier should consist only of the name of the country. The proposal may be resubmitted.

School facilities—Finance; School facilities—Finance—Law and legislation; School facilities—Law and legislation

Each of these proposals includes a cataloger’s note that contains the cataloger’s translation of the title of the work being cataloged. That translation should appear in the source citation for the work instead.  In addition, the title does not support the proposals School facilities—Finance and School facilities—Finance—Law and legislation, because it does not refer to finance.

The proposals may be resubmitted.

Senufo literature; Folk literature, Senufo

It is unusual to establish a heading for the literatures of a language group in cases where that language group does not also represent a nationality. The source citation is sketchy in that it only translates the title into “Senufo tales,” but the meeting suggests that a more appropriate heading may be Senufo (African people)—Folklore.  SHM instruction sheets H 1627 and H 1780-1800 should be consulted to assist with this decision.  If the heading Folk literature, Senufo, is still desired, then the proposal should provide a more complete description of the work being cataloged to support that need.

Thousand Islands National Park (Ont.); Saint Lawrence Islands National Park (Ont.)

When the name of a park or other geographic feature is changed, the existing heading is revised to the new name and the former name becomes a UF. These proposals, however, attempted to establish the new name as a BT of the old name.

Instructions for changing existing headings are provided in H 193. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Velamas

According to H 202, sec. 1.a, “Thorough authority research demonstrating that the term selected for the proposed heading is the appropriate one must be done for all concepts that are new to the LC subject heading system and outside the scope of simple and obvious pattern situations.”  This proposal was for a concept new to LCSH, and is not a “simple and obvious pattern situation,” but no evidence of research was provided. Joshua Project provides an extensive entry on the Velama that cites numerous variant names. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate citations and cross-references.

Wobeter family

This proposal was made to add the UF Vobejda family.  Vobejda is the Czech spelling of this name, and Wobeter is the Americanized name.  According to H 1631 sec. 3.c, “If a family name has been changed substantially as the result of emigration, establish headings for both names, connect them with 500 fields, and assign both headings to the work being cataloged.”  The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Nature poetry

The source citations provided show that there is an appreciable difference between nature poetry and environmental (or ecological) poetry. The former often romanticizes nature and takes nature for its own sake, whereas environmental poetry often depicts nature as being threatened by the influence of human technology. The meeting would prefer that two separate terms be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nature writing

Given the ambiguity of the phrase “nature writing,” the meeting is concerned that this proposed term will be widely misunderstood by users and catalogers alike, notwithstanding the possibility of including a carefully worded scope note. The preference is therefore to facet the concept. The specific topic of the writing should be brought out with subject headings, while the genre/form term Creative writing or Essays may be assigned to bring out the form of the works. The proposal was not approved.

CHILDREN’S SUBJECT HEADINGS

Nature—Fiction

The proposal did not include a citation to the work being cataloged, which is required for all proposals (see H 202). The proposal may be resubmitted.
