PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: L. Dechman

CLASSIFICATION

BL457.V46

This proposal is for a work about the Planet Venus in nature worship, for which BL438 should be used instead.  The proposal was not approved.

NK4399.P66

This proposal seeks to add Pontenx to an A-Z list for special varieties of porcelain, or for porcelain from special manufacturers, for which a subject heading should be established.  The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the corresponding subject heading if desired.

If the cataloger wishes to classify the work with the region or country instead, the classification number NK4498.P+ should be assigned, and no proposal is necessary.

PL248.A312247

The subject headings on the work cat make it appear as though the work is a critical study of the depiction of Joseph, Son of Jacob, in Turkish folk poetry. If that is the case, the work should class in PL220.  If the work is poetry about Joseph, Son of Jacob, then the class number being proposed is okay. The meeting did not have access to the work cat, so it was not possible to determine which of the above options was true.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information that clarifies the situation.

PS3505.A7713

This proposal sought to establish a number for the author Clark Carrados; however, the author should be classified in Spanish literature.  The cataloger should determine which time period is appropriate for him.  Also, the name authority record indicates that Carrados is a pseudonym for Luis García Lecha, which should be added as a reference to the number established for the author (see F 632 sec. 3.a.).  The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Athletic shoes

The proposal was submitted without a citation to a work cat.  In addition, the meeting would like the cataloger to reconsider the BT Sporting goods.  Athletic shoes are not necessary for sport, as uniforms, catcher’s mitts, bats, footballs, and other things are.  Upon reconsideration of the BT, the proposal may be resubmitted with a citation to a current work being cataloged.

Sneakers

The proposal was submitted without a citation to a work cat.  The proposal may be resubmitted with a citation to a current work being cataloged.

Autonomy in children in literature

LCSH headings are not formulated ordinarily as [topic] in [topic] in [discipline]. Instead, Autonomy (Psychology) in children and Children in literature should be assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Bessarabsʹkyĭ rynok (Kiev, Ukraine)

Markets should be established in the name authority file per H 405, Group One.  The proposal was not approved.

LCSH contains three other markets that are established in the name authority file.  Cancellation proposals for the subject headings will appear on an upcoming list.

Cameroon—Politics and government—1960-

This heading should not be cancelled. The Cameroon—Politics and government—1960- heading exists for works about the history of Cameroon since it became independent, and should exist alongside Cameroon—Politics and government—1960-1982 and Cameroon—Politics and government—1982-, which are more specific.  The proposal was not approved.

Cardiff Civic Centre (Cardiff, Wales)

The proposal provided no information that the Cardiff Civic Centre is a city hall as the BT City halls indicates.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information that supports the choice of the BT.

Čestný sloup Nejsvětější Trojice (Olomouc, Czech Republic)

The proposal provided no information that the Čestný sloup Nejsvětější Trojice is a monument as the BT Monuments indicates.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information that supports the choice of the BT.

Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary (Bangladesh)

This wildlife refuge should be established in Bengali, the vernacular language of Bangladesh (per H 1925 sec. 1.a.).  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Circle Z Guest Ranch (Ariz.)

GNIS has a citation to the Circle Z Ranch, and it provides variant names. If the proposal represents the same ranch as the one cited in GNIS, the form of heading and the UFs should be reconsidered.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

College students’ writings, Bosnian; College student’s writings, Bulgarian; College students’ writings, Croatian; College students’ writings, Serbian

The 670s in each of these proposals indicates only that the authors are students, and not their academic level.  The proposals may be resubmitted with additional information.

Cooking, Mixtec

The work cat citation states that the work being cataloged presents cooking terms in the Mixtec language with translations of the terms into Spanish.  If that is the case, three headings should be assigned to the work being cataloged, Cooking—Terminology; Mixtec language—Terms and phrases; and Mixtec language—Translations into Spanish; and this proposal was not necessary.

However, a heading of the type being proposed is used to identify national and ethnic cuisines and styles of cooking (see H 1475 sec. 3). In this case the heading would be established in natural language order, not inverted (see H 320 sec. 2).  If the work cat is actually about the Mixtec style of cooking, the 670 should be revised to include that information, and the revised proposal may be resubmitted.

Dagestanis—Kazakhstan

Dagestanis is authorized for geographic subdivision; therefore, the proposal was not necessary.

Kazakhstan—Ethnic relations

The subdivision –Ethnic relations free-floats under names of places; therefore, the proposal was not necessary.

Dornier Do 215 (Bomber)

The Do 215 is the same plane as the Do 17, which is already established as Dornier Do 17 (Bomber).  Do 215, Dornier Do 215, and Dornier 215 will be added as UFs to the existing record. The proposal was not approved.

Dulatov family

The ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family should be included in the information provided from the work being cataloged (per H 1631 sec. 3.a.). The proposal may be resubmitted with the required information.

Epic poetry, Baluchi

The work cat citation in the proposal provided no information in English that the work is about poetry; nor does it identify the language of the poetry.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information in English.

Fishes—Communication; Animal communication

In LCSH, Communication means “human communication” and the subdivision –Communication is already free-floating under ethnic groups.  The heading Animal communication has been around for many years, and there have been large numbers of books written about communication among particular types of animals.  In the past, the heading Animal communication has been postcoordinated with a heading for [type of animal]—Behavior; occasionally adding a heading for a particular behavior, etc. (e.g., Birdsong; Pheromones). There are hundreds of items in the database that follow this practice including works on insect communication, honeybee communication, bird communication, dolphin communication, etc.  The meeting chose to retain the current practice of postcoordination, rather than authorizing the free-floating subdivision under animals.  The proposal was not approved.

Fort McAllister State Historic Park (Ga.)

The proposal provides only the title of the work cat, with no information about where the park is located. Also, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources calls the park by a different name, and so do some other websites; so, the cataloger should determine which is the correct form.  All of the other forms of the name should be added as UFs.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fort Morris (Ga.)

The proposal does not provide any usage of the name Fort Morris from the work being cataloged. More importantly, though, the website stated that Fort Morris and Fort Defiance are different forts on the same site, and should have two different headings. Also, there appears to be some disagreement over whether the fort is in Sunbury or not. Depending on the answer, the qualifier for the heading may need to be adjusted.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fort Morris State Historic Site (Ga.)

The 670 for the work cat gives a former name, Sunbury Historic Site, which should be a UF.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Friesische Wehde (Germany)

It appears that Friesische Wehde was a jurisdiction from 1933-1948; therefore, it should be established in the name authority file.  The proposal was not approved.

Harkerville Forest (South Africa)

The proposal provided no information to support any of the BTs chosen.  The South African National Parks website seems to indicate that the forest is part of a larger national park, so, the cataloger should determine which of the BTs are appropriate and provide that information in the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park (South Africa)

There is evidence online that the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park was two or more separate parks, which were merged.  Earlier parks should have their own headings and should not be conflated on this record.  The cataloger should confirm this information and propose what is needed for the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hoodlums

This proposal to add the UF Hoods onto the existing heading did not cite a work cat, which would provide the reason for the change.  In addition, the cataloger should be aware that the word “hoods” has many meanings, so it should be qualified.  The proposal may be resubmitted with a citation to a current work being cataloged.

Hymns, Coreguaje

The proposal should have included information in English from the work being cataloged.  The additional information should support both the form “hymns” and the language “Coreguaje.”  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Internet celebrities

LCSH already has a heading Internet personalities, which has a BT of Celebrities.  The meeting felt that there is little difference between the proposed heading and the existing one.  A UF Internet celebrities will be added to the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Isshiki family

The proposal did not provide any information in English, so the meeting was unable to evaluate it.  The proposal should contain information in English including the English form of the name and the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family (per H 1631 sec. 3.a.). The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information.

Kuczynski family

A heading for this family already exists in LCSH (sh2010012966).  The proposal was not necessary.

Kulzhabasy Site (Kazakhstan)

The proposal was submitted without a citation to a work cat or to any other information that supports the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted with a citation to and information from the current work being cataloged plus other information as necessary.

Morinie (France)

This proposal was made for the ancient Gallic province of the Morini people that had its capital at Thérouanne. Since it is a former jurisdiction, it should be established in the name authority file. In addition, there is a current jurisdiction of Morinie, with its capital at Thérouanne, and may be more-or-less coextensive with the Gallic province.

Also, it appears that the work cat may be about the Morini people, and a proposal for the ethnic group might be required.

The proposal for Morinie (France) was not approved.

Pieridēs family

The proposal did not provide any information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family as required by H 1631 sec. 3.a.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Steampunk fiction

On List 1023, a proposal was made to remove the BTs Science fiction and Fantasy fiction in favor of Fiction. The current proposal was made to remove Fiction in favor of Science fiction.  Also, current proposals were not made as required to adjust the BTs on the qualified headings.

On List 1020, the decision was made that crossover genres such as Steampunk fiction should have Fiction as the BT, rather than attempting to assign multiple BTs.

The proposal was not approved.

Surfers

The proposal was submitted without a citation to a work cat.  Catalogers should be aware of the principle of literary warrant on which LCSH is based.  Superfluous changes prevent policy specialists from being able to give more attention to new terminology. The proposal may be resubmitted if it is supported by current work being cataloged.

Thomond Park (Limerick, Limerick, Ireland)

The proposal provided no information that Thomond Park is a rugby football ground as the BT Rugby football grounds indicates.  The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information that supports the choice of the BT.

Volynskiĭ family

The proposal did not provide any information about the ethnicity, nationality, or location of the family as required by H 1631 sec. 3.a.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Walker Valley (Wash.)

GNIS indicates that there is a Walker Creek in the same county as the Walker Valley being proposed.  If the proposal represents Walker Creek’s valley, the creek should be established at the same time (per H 800 sec. 8).  If not, information indicating that fact should be provided in the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Zanzibaris

Zanzibar is an island in Tanzania and is also a semi-autonomous region. Zanzibaris are not an ethnic group.  LCSH includes “national” headings like this only to the national level.  The proposal was not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Note pads

There is no appreciable difference between a notebook and a notepad.  The existing term Notebooks should be assigned instead.  The proposal was not approved.

Rituals (Wiccan)

LCGFT does not include separate terms for rituals of individual religions or denominations. The term Liturgical books should be assigned, and the religion may be brought out with subject headings.  The proposal was not approved.

DEMOGRAPHIC TERMS

Announcement:

Faculty members versus teaching faculty

This list included several proposals for teachers of various disciplines: Entomology teachers, Geography teachers, History teachers, Art history teachers, Linguistics teachers, Literature teachers, Physics teachers, and Political science teachers. The citations for the works being cataloged indicated that the creators self-identified as university and college faculty members, but not as teachers.  Not all faculty members in institutions of higher learning are teaching faculty, so the terms are not supported by – and are not necessary for – the works being cataloged.  For example, the statement “[name] is associate professor of political science at the University of Michigan,” which was cited in support of the proposal for Political science teachers, is not sufficient to propose the term, because whether the person actually teaches political science is unknown.  All of the proposals listed above except Physics teachers did include other works that explicitly support the proposal, although many of those works are clearly not current cataloging as required by the parameters for Phase 3 of the LCDGT pilot. As an exception, all of the proposals but Physics teachers were approved because of the other works cited.

Any proposals for teachers of specific disciplines that are currently awaiting review will be treated in the same manner: if a work other than the work being cataloged is cited in the record and clearly supports the proposal, the proposal will be approved.  However, any proposal submitted from this date forward will be subject to the standard requirement that the proposed term be necessary for the work being cataloged.

Other decisions:

Plant taxonomists

The work being cataloged may be a taxonomy of several genera, but that does not mean that the author a taxonomist. The proposal provides no evidence that the author self-identifies that way.  The proposal was not necessary.

Figure skaters

LCDGT manual L 470 specifically states that RTs cannot be made for terms that have the same BT at any level of hierarchy. Figure skaters and Ice dancers both have the BT Athletes.  The proposal was not approved.

Physics teachers

This proposal was not necessary for the work being cataloged (see the announcement at top of this section).

Protein chemists; Protein engineers

The 670s do not provide a description or definition of the terms.  The proposals may be resubmitted.

University and college faculty members

Not all faculty members teach, so the BT Teachers is not appropriate.  The proposal was not approved.
