CLASSIFICATION
DK4600.L86-.L8689
The proposal sought to change an existing single cutter into a span. There are only 17 works in the number, and only 10 of them are actually for the Lubusz Region. The meeting felt that it was not necessary to introduce a subarrangement to divide this small file. The proposal was not approved.
[F612.C472]; F612.H5
A geographic feature that spans two or more local jurisdictions within a U.S. state gets its own cutter number. A proposal has been submitted for Christmas Lake at F612.C47. The proposal to add Christmas Lake to the including note under Hennepin County was not approved.
PK1835.5-1835.5.95
There was a subject proposal for this language marked resubmit on list 1509. It was never resubmitted. A proposal for the language should be submitted with the resubmitted classification proposal.
PL989.24.S53; PL989.26.H3
Literary author numbers are not generally revised after they have been established, unless they are clearly in error. In this list, literary author numbers are generally based on the second part of the name, but not always. Because the practice varies, the PL989.26.H3 is not “clearly in error” and should continue to be used. The proposal was not necessary.
PR275.J45
The work being cataloged is chiefly about the depiction of Jews in the Canterbury Tales and The Siege of Jerusalem, a Middle English poem. The work is therefore about Jews in medieval poetry, not Jews in medieval literature. It should be classed in PR317.J48. The proposal was not necessary.
TR681.S445
Portraits of musicians, including singers, should be classed in ML87-88. A cross-reference will be added in TR for Singers. The proposal was not approved.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Chateau de Meung-sur-Loire (France)
The esplanade is in Meung-sur-Loire, so it needs to be qualified by Meung-sur-Loire, which should be established in the NAF before it can be used in the qualifier. Also, the proposal should include a UF with the significant word in the first position. (See H 1334 for both rules.) Finally, a castle in LCSH is for defensive purposes, but this chateau appears to be more like a palace. The cataloger should consider using the BT Palaces or another more appropriate heading, such as Dwellings. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Christian Science Plaza (Boston, Mass.)
There is a physical public plaza called Christian Science Plaza in Boston, so the heading is appropriate. The UF and the MARC tagging are of concern. According to its website, Christian Scientists refer to the entire complex – including five buildings – as either the Christian Science Center or the Christian Science Plaza. Is Christian Science Plaza in fact a variant name for a building complex that just happens to include a square? Or is the plaza just the public square? If it is the former, the tags should be 110 and 151. If it is the latter, the tag should be a 151, and the UF should probably be deleted. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate changes and enough additional information to resolve these questions.
Eastern pipistrelle
This heading is for a species. According to SHM H 1332 sec. 4.b., the broader term should be the term for the genus, Perimyotis, which is not yet established in LCSH. A proposal should be submitted for Perimyotis along with the resubmitted proposal for Eastern pipistrelle.
Oltenia (Romania)
Although BGN currently calls Oltenia a region, it is a historical jurisdiction and should remain in the NAF. The proposal was not approved.
Girgorʹevskai͡a premii͡a
The cataloger did not provide any information in English, and the UF does not appear to be supported. The proposal may be resubmitted with sufficient information in English to support both the heading and the UF.
Golden Valley (England)
The Golden Valley is the valley of the River Dore, which has not been established. The river must be established before the river’s valley can be proposed (see H 800 sec. 8). Additionally, there is a populated place Golden Valley and another actual valley called Golden Valley, so the qualifier needs to be reconsidered per H 810. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Goss Moor (England)
There should be two separate headings when a geographic feature has a park, natural area, etc., coextensive with it. The BTs on this proposal are for both the geographic feature and the natural area, but it is unclear which of the two is actually needed. The proposal may be resubmitted with appropriate changes and enough additional information resolve the question.
Healthy cooking
The 952 field says that there is “no set definition” of healthy cooking, but no research was recorded in the 670s to support that conclusion. Some research should be cited in the 670s, not just titles that use the phrase. The scope note should be based on definitions or descriptions cited in the supporting research. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Historical fiction, Bolivian
Only a Spanish title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Jardins Ungemach (Strasbourg, France)
Jardins Ungemach appears to be a city section in Strasbourg, not a garden; therefore, it should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
Man-woman relations in art
The heading should be Man-woman relationships in art, which is an existing heading in LCSH. The proposal was not approved.
Mythology, Tahitian
The cataloger provided no information in English to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.
National characteristics, Ecuadorian, in art
Only a Spanish title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Nawruz (Festival) in art
The cataloger provided no information in English to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Personal flotation devices
According to the 670, personal flotation devices is a variant term for life preservers. The meeting does not feel there is a need to establish another level of hierarchy with which to divide this narrow concept even more narrowly. Therefore, Personal flotation devices will be added as a UF on the existing heading Life preservers. The proposal was not approved.
Life jackets
Since a separate heading Personal flotation devices was not approved, this proposal to change the BT on Life jackets was also not approved.
Progressive Artists’ Group (Mumbai, India)
According to the Tate web site (http://www.tate.org.uk/learn/online-resources/glossary/b/bombay-progressive-artists-group) , this artists’ group staged their own exhibitions and events; therefore, the group should be established in the name authority file. (See the footnote under Artists’ groups in H 405 Group 2.) The proposal was not approved.
Radio broadcasting of sports
The proposal appeared to be correct, but there was no work cat, only a Wikipedia citation. A work cat should always be cited to explain the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Ramadan in art
The cataloger provided no information in English to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Reportage literature, Sinhalese
The source citation said that the work is about “newspaper reportage.” Reportage literature is literature that features personal presence and involvement of a human witness, according to the scope note. It is not reporting in newspapers, although sometimes it can appear in newspapers. The heading that was probably needed was Reporters and reporting or its BT, Journalism. If the book really is about reportage literature that appeared in newspapers, the proposal should be resubmitted with a clarified 670. Otherwise, the proposal was not necessary.
Rosie the Riveter (Symbolic character)
Rosie the Riveter can be considered as part of U.S. national mythology, or conversely, characters from mythology can be considered national symbols. The meeting felt that this character should be established in the NAF as are fictitious characters, legendary characters, mythological beings, and deities. The proposal was not approved.
Hacktivism
The only citation provided that stated that hacktivism is a form of cultural jamming is the Urban dictionary. Hacktivism and hacking have taken on extremely broad meanings that the meeting felt was sufficiently covered by the existing BTs. The proposal was not approved.
Hoaxes in mass media
This is a prepositional phrase heading, which by policy has only one BT - the heading that corresponds to the term following the preposition. The heading was created for a work about the media perpetrating hoaxes (for example, “The War of the Worlds”). Culture jamming can be a situation in which someone is hoaxing the media, which is a quite different thing. The proposal was not approved.
Torroella, Battle of, Spain
The UF Ter, Battle of the River, Spain, 1694, was not supported by information supplied in the 670s. The proposal may be resubmitted along with supporting information.
Wamallí Indians
Joshua Project indicates that the preferred name is Huamali, and provides another UF. The cataloger should do more research to determine the preferred name and find the variants. Also, a BT should be added to the record. The proposal may be resubmitted.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Birdsongs (Sound recordings)
The Summary of Decisions for list 1306 stated that all sounds of nature, including birdsongs, should be assigned Nature sounds. “Birdsongs recordings” was a proposal that was not approved for that reason. Likewise, this proposal is not approved.
Ecofiction; Nature fiction
The cataloger did not provide a definition of nature fiction, only a list of titles. Without a definition of nature fiction, it is impossible to determine if the RT relationship between the two headings is appropriate, or if the two terms would be better as BT/NT. Both proposals may be resubmitted; perhaps including a contrasting scope note.
Floor plans; Maps; Plans (Orthographic projections)
The resources being described in these proposals are drawings. PSD is currently working with ARLIS on a project to add art terms to the genre-form vocabulary. These proposals were withdrawn by the meeting and may be resubmitted if terms for the forms are not included in the art project.
Handbooks and manuals
The hyphenated form hand-books is outmoded and the UF can be stricken. The hyphenation (or not) of vade-mecums is immaterial because it normalizes. The proposal was not approved.
Mythological comics
This proposal only provides titles that have mythological beings in them, which is not sufficient proof that the genre exists. The cataloger should provide a reference source or two giving a description or definition. The proposal may be resubmitted.
DEMOGRAPHIC TERMS
New Zealanders
The reference source cited stated that Aotearoans is rarely used. LCDGT does not have to include every single possible variant, only those that are current and are likely to be searched. The proposal was not approved.
East Anglians
East Anglia is a multi-county region in England, and as such, East Anglians is eligible for LCDGT. However, the writer of the work being cataloged indicated that she is from Norwich, which is the county town of Norfolk. The demonym for Norfolk should be proposed and used for this work. The situation would be different if the author self-identified as an East Anglian, but no evidence of that was provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.
