CLASSIFICATION

HV5822.C3

This proposal sought to cancel HV5822.C3 (Cannabis) in favor of HV5822.M3 (Marijuana); however, in this section of the HV schedule, Cannabis is used collectively for all products made from Cannabis including Marijuana and Hashish.  The classification numbers will be retained as they are and notes will be added to the schedule to clarify the situation.  The proposal was not approved.

PL8787-8787.95

The classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See below under Wumbvu language for more information.

PN6084.A73

The quotations in the work being cataloged are chiefly taken from scholarly works about the state of archaeology in Australia.  Only a few of the quotations are literary; therefore, the work should not be classed in PN.  A better number would be CC101.A+.  The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

 Authors, Pnar

Pnar and Jaintia are established as separate ethnic groups, but the UF on this proposal conflates them.  If the established headings are incorrect, the cataloger should do research to support that conclusion and correct them.  If they are indeed separate people, are two separate headings, “Authors, Pnar” and “Authors, Jaintia” needed?  If so, they should both be proposed.  The UF Authors, Synteng is a UF on the base ethnic group heading and should be stricken from this proposal.  The cataloger should also provide a natural-language UF.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Brahui periodicals

The meeting was not able to evaluate this proposal because the source citation included only the Brahui title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Claar family

Claar is a variant of Klaar for which a heading already exists.  A reference to Claar family will be added on the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Encant-Palmcroft Historic District (Phoenix, Ariz.)

SHM H 720, Background, states that historic districts in cities are to be treated like city sections and established in the Name Authority File (NAF). The proposal was not approved.

Fables, French-Canadian

The meeting was not able to evaluate this proposal because the source citation included only the French title of the work being cataloged, which did not specify the language of the fables.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fraternity members

This proposal was originally on List 1508 and the Minutes of that meeting stated: “The phrase “fraternity members” is ambiguous because there are high school fraternities, honorary fraternities, and service fraternities in addition to Greek letter societies in colleges and universities.  Only a list of titles was provided in support of this proposal, and the titles do not provide context for the phrase.  Information from the works being cited should show whether the works are about male college students who are fraternity members, and the proposed heading should be revised to make it less ambiguous.  The BT Greek letter societies should also be removed from the proposal, per the rules for BTs as laid out in H 370: fraternity members are neither a class member of the concept of Greek letter societies, nor are they a part of the concept, nor an instance of it.  Classes of persons headings should have classes of persons as their BTs.”

It appears that only the broader term was changed in response to the PSD comments, and the presence of the broader term Male college students is not sufficient to clarify the ambiguity of the phrase “fraternity members.”

However, there is another proposal on this list for “College fraternity members,” which does not have the same ambiguity that this proposal has, so the proposal for “College fraternity members” will be approved.

The proposal for “Fraternity members” was not approved.

Gônave Island (Haiti)

The 670 provided in the record says that this island constitutes an arrondissement, which is a jurisdiction (a Group 1 entity) that should be established in the NAF.  The proposal was not approved.

Heaton Mine Colliery Disaster, England, 1815

SHM H 1592 states that phrase headings for events may be established if the event acquires a conventional proper name.  There was no conventional proper name provided in the proposal.  The cataloger should provide such evidence, or should assign Coal mine accidents—[place] in the bibliographic record.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hypermasculinity

This proposal was originally on List 1508 and the Minutes of that meeting stated: “The source citations consist of a list of titles and a Wikipedia citation. Wikipedia is not considered authoritative for subject proposal purposes (see the revision of H 202 sec. 1.b, available at http://www.loc.gov/aba/publications/FreeSHM/freeshm/H0202.pdf and various announcements in Summaries of Decisions since 2011).  Since hypermasculinity is a psychological concept, authoritative reference works in the discipline of psychology should be consulted for a definition of the term. In addition, a cataloger’s note indicated that hypermasculinity may be confused with the existing heading Machismo. If that is the case, then research on machismo should also be carried out, and the definitions of machismo that are found should be used to construct a contrasting scope note with Hypermasculinity (see H 400 sec. 1, “Two or more closely related or overlapping headings”).”

The resubmitted proposal did not cite an authoritative psychological reference source as requested, did not provide a definition of hypermasculinity at all, and it also did not provide any indication of the difference between Maschismo and Hypermasculinity.  This proposal is not approved until such time as that information can be provided.

Indian cooking; Cooking, Indic

These proposals were submitted in order to make the distinction between “Indian” and “Indic” explicit.  The meeting does not wish to set a precedent by adding scope notes and references to this pair of terms, when other pairs of terms may also be easily confused.  The meeting did acknowledge that some clear distinction should be made; therefore, PSD will examine the situation in order to make a comprehensive decision.  The proposals were not approved.

Isfandiyār (Legendary character)

As of July 2013, headings for individual legendary characters, which had previously been established as subjects, should now be established in the NAF (see SHM H 1795).  The proposal was not approved.

La Digue Island (Seychelles)

This proposal sought to add a UF “La Digue (Seychelles : Island)” to the record.  A reference that begins with the words “La Digue” would not add value to the record.  Further, SHM H 690 sec. 8 states that the preference is to resolve conflict by including the designation of the feature type in the name of the feature itself. When this instruction is followed, the UF being proposed would exactly duplicate the heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Love poetry, Kurdish

This proposal included an English parallel title, but it does not have an obvious relationship to the heading proposed (that is, it does not indicate that the work is, or is about, love poetry).  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lushchynsʹkyĭ family

The 670 should contain an English form of the family name as well as nationality and/or ethnicity and/or location of the family.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mai, Île de (Québec)

This is a proposal to change a perfectly fine heading.  The heading as it exists does not follow current policy with regard to language, but neither do many older headings. Neither catalogers in the field nor PSD staff have enough spare time to propose, evaluate, and process unnecessary work.  Catalogers should concentrate on proposing new concepts and correcting errors that lead to lack of access, rather than trying to correct headings that are not wrong.

The proposal was not approved.

Mauges (France)

This proposal is for Mauges as a region, but Mauges seems to have several characteristics of a jurisdiction – it has a commission, a president, vice presidents, and representatives.  It also has a mailing address (see www.paysdesmauges.fr ).  Headings for jurisdictions should be established in the NAF.  The proposal was not approved.

Organ trafficking

This proposal conflates the concepts “trafficking” and “theft,” which are two very different concepts.  The pattern cited is Drug traffic, which does not conflate theft and trafficking.  The only supporting citation added to the record is from Wikipedia, which also does not conflate the concepts.  If a heading is needed for the concept of “organ theft” (and no work cat citation was added to indicate that it is needed), a separate proposal should be submitted.  The proposal was not approved.

Oyrnafjall (Cargo ship)

The proposal is for a named vessel, which is a Group 1 entity and should be established in the NAF.  The proposal was not approved.

PFC Milton A Lee Medal of Honor Memorial Highway (Texas)

To propose a heading for a named road, SHM H 2098 indicates that there are certain questions to be answered.  Is this a named section of a larger road?  Where is it?  Is it in a city?  If so, which one?  That information should be provided in the 670s.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Poultry as food

This proposal was originally on List 1508 and the Minutes of that meeting stated (in part): “This proposal was made to change the references and add classification numbers for the existing heading.  One of the proposed changes was to remove the BT Food.  That BT should be retained, per H 370 sec. 1.e.”

The current proposal still changes the BT from Food to Meat.  However, the BT Food should be retained because it is explicitly required by H 370 sec. 1.e.  The proposal was not approved.

Schoharie Reservoir (N.Y.)

The citation from GNIS in the proposal does not include the variants that are reported in GNIS.  A complete citation from GNIS should be provided, and UFs should be added for the variants.  Also, when the entry in GNIS characterizes the entity as both a lake and a reservoir, a broader term for each should be added.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Slub (The Polish word)

The information in the 952 field should be in the 670 for the work cat. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Statistical associating fluid theory

SHM H 370 sec. 1.a. states that each new concept being proposed should include at least one broader term.  Also, since this is a complex scientific concept, a definition should be provided to assist in the evaluation and consistent assignment of the heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Synchrophasors

This proposal was originally on List 1508 and the Minutes of that meeting indicated that the heading and the UFs should be plural.  In the resubmitted proposal, only the heading was made plural, not the references.
Also in the Minutes, the following statement was made: “The IEEE Standard, which is freely available online, includes a definition of synchrophasors. There is also a technical paper called “Synchrophasors: Definition, Measurement, and Application” available online. It provides information that would support the choice of BT references. Both of those sources, and others, can be found by doing a Google search for synchrophasor.”

The purpose of this statement was to request that the cataloger provide an understandable definition of “synchrophasors” on the record, which would be informative for future use, and also would support the choice of BTs.  The additional information provided in this proposal does not offer an understandable definition.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Taranenko family

The 670 should contain information on the nationality and/or ethnicity and/or location of the family.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Unemployed, Writings of the, Belgian (French)

This proposal was originally on List 1508, and it has been improved, however, there is no information in English in the 670s, and the French title bears no obvious connection to French writings of Belgian unemployed people. The cataloger should provide such information from the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Verse drama, Kurdish

This proposal included only a title in Kurdish, so the meeting could not evaluate it. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Wumbvu language

The Ethnologue citation provided is incomplete, since there are several variant names given by Ethnologue that are not listed in the record.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Announcements

Scope note style

Beginning in mid-November, PSD will undertake a project to simplify the wording of scope notes in LCGFT. Instead of beginning with “This heading is used as a genre/form heading for…,” scope notes will not have an introductory phrase. The style of the second sentence of contrasting scope notes will also be revised.  Formerly, the pattern was as follows:

Scope note without reference to another term
This heading is used as a genre/form heading for [description.]

Contrasting scope note
This heading is used as a genre/form heading for [description of Term A]. [Description of Term B] are entered under [Term B].

Going forward, scope notes will be formatted as follows:

Scope note without reference to another term
[Description].

Contrasting scope note
[Description of Term A]. For [description of Term B] see [Term B].

In addition, the scope notes for approximately 170 film and television form headings in LCSH were modified to a non-standard format in 2007 in order to resolve a display issue. That issue has since been resolved, and the scope notes will now be revised back to the standard LCSH format.

All records will be revised off-list. The project will be completed by early 2016.

Geographic subdivision

To promote consistency in LCGFT, PSD will undertake a project to revise all genre/form terms currently marked (Not Subd Geog) to No decision. This action will have no practical effect on assignment of terms, since neither terms marked (Not Subd Geog) nor those marked No decision may be geographically subdivided.  The project will affect approximately 370 of the over 1,800 terms in LCGFT and will be completed by early 2016.
